elfbargpt··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
Lol funny you say that. I've found myself defaulting to an incognito ChatGPT window for random searches throughout the day. Logged out so I don't make my ChatGPT history messy
elfbargpt··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
I have no idea why Sebastian would offer the individuals attribution if OpenAi didn't somewhat knowingly scoop them
elfbargpt··on Kimi K2.6: Advancing open-source coding
I've always been surprised Kimi doesn't get more attention than it does. It's always stood out to me in terms of creativity, quality... has been my favorite model for awhile (but I'm far from an authority)
elfbargpt··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Chinese envoy was meeting Maduro just hours ago in Miraflores. Wonder how that factors into the situation
elfbargpt··on Tell HN: I am afraid AI will take my job at some point
I'm pretty confident that if Ai gets good enough to actually take our jobs, it's going to be good enough to take at least 80% of all knowledge work jobs, if not 100%.

In which case everybody is in the same boat and we'll all be in it together.

I don't really believe software dev is uniquely at risk to AI.

elfbargpt··on Engineers who dismiss AI
The catch-22 I run into with AI coding help is always: it helps the most with problems I know how to solve. I feel like most engineers run into problems where we can't fully articulate the problem we're having (otherwise we would be able to fix it). In which case AI can be helpful, but more in a google way.
elfbargpt··on Apple's slow AI pace becomes a strength as market grows weary of spending
I think one of Apple's strengths since Tim Cook took over is their ability to avoid "gimmicks". As much criticism as people have of apple for not innovating on the iPhone, I appreciate their ability to not screw products up.

I'm not saying AI is a gimmick, but the caution they show is a good quality I think

elfbargpt··on YouTube to be included in Australia's social media ban for children under 16
I find it weird that people aren't questioning the motives behind these changes a little more. Is it not strange this is coming at the same time as the UK Online Safety Act?

There are reports of posts related to the middle eastern conflict being censored. Somehow I don't think this about violence and adult content.

elfbargpt··on Launch YC: Optifye.ai – AI performance monitoring for factory workers
I don't think anybody is unaware of third-world conditions. Just surprised YC is investing in tech that helps enforce those conditions directly
elfbargpt··on Launch YC: Optifye.ai – AI performance monitoring for factory workers
I assume unions would have a problem with this right?
elfbargpt··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
I totally get your point, but calling the UK's bluff could work. Are they really willing to ban Apple products in the UK? Maybe, maybe not
elfbargpt··on Trump says he will check amount of gold stored at Fort Knox
I hope they do check just for the sake of entertainment, but I can't imagine gold would be worth that much more if it was empty. I just googled and there's supposed to be about ~280 billion dollars of gold there. Which is a lot but I think there's about $12 trillion of gold in circulation
elfbargpt··on Sam Altman: "50¢ of compute of a SWE Agent can yield "$500 or $5k of work."
If this were remotely true they would NOT be offering a subscription. They would start a consulting company that does custom software development and dominate the market
elfbargpt··on Tell HN: OpenAI in Panic Mode over DeepSeek
I'm sure this is just fan fiction, but you're saying some people think "DeepSeek has cracked something fundamental that we missed", and other people think they just stole everything? Any actual evidence one way or another?
elfbargpt··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
They account for 30% of global manufacturing, have the second largest GDP (largest GDP PPP), and are rapidly developing in the tech sector. Not weak by any means
elfbargpt··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
They expected China to grow in a way that would lead to the "west" exerting much more control over China than they ended up with today. Basically they wanted more western-style capitalism, reduction of state control, etc...

Now China is very strong, and the west exerts very little influence

elfbargpt··on DeepSeek demonstrates pro-Chinese bias
Is it somehow bad to be "pro-Chinese"?

Imagine someone saying OpenAi has a "pro-American" bias

elfbargpt··on The race for "AI Supremacy" is over – at least for now
I think that is indeed the plan as far as I can tell
elfbargpt··on Trump Orders JFK, RFK, MLK Assassination Documents Released
I feel like it's fair to assume the documents should contain something fairly scandalous if they're real. Is there another reason they wouldn't have been released earlier given the public interest?
elfbargpt··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
Here's what Chuck Schumer said:

"It's clear that more time is needed to find an American buyer and not disrupt the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans of so many influencers who have built up a good network of followers" [1]

The deal was divest or ban, not look for "more time to find a buyer". My point is they were never prepared for an actual ban.

elfbargpt··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
Clearly US lawmakers were convinced they could easily force ByteDance to divest by issuing an ultimatum. They were never prepared to actually see a ban of TikTok
elfbargpt··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
I think it's obvious that US lawmakers were somehow convinced ByteDance would absolutely divest from TikTok if threatened with an ultimatum. They were never prepared for an actual ban and the resulting fallout. Now that it's obvious they won't divest (which should have been obvious the entire time), they flipped
elfbargpt··on TikTok goes dark in the US
There is no Facebook in China for the same reason there will be no TikTok in the United States. Both Meta and ByteDance won't let another country run their business. Facebook was given the chance to operate in China if they complied with China's rules
elfbargpt··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Haha fair. But I don't think any company should be strong-armed by another nation into selling. Meta would never be allowed to sell their "Chinese arm" to a domestic Chinese entity...part of the reason there isn't one
elfbargpt··on TikTok goes dark in the US
There are much bigger factors at play than a few billion dollars
elfbargpt··on TikTok goes dark in the US
I have a feeling the ban is likely the result of "special interest" groups as opposed to a "classified briefing"
elfbargpt··on DeepSeek-V3
From @kevinsxu on twitter:

Some interesting facts about DeepSeek:

- never received/sought outside funding (thus far)

- self-funded out of a hedge fund (called High-Flyer)

- entire AI team is reportedly recruited from within China, no one who's worked at a foreign company

- founder is classmates with the founder of DJI, both studied at Zhejiang University

elfbargpt··on Bluesky adds 700k new users in a week

elfbargpt··on Show HN: Who Should Be the President?
Surprised there aren't more votes for Stein, hoping to see a big third party bump this election
elfbargpt··on Hezbollah hand-held radios detonate across Lebanon, sources say
I imagine there has to be hundreds of unexploded devices in Lebanon. I would expect to see some of those surface over the next few weeks, or someone get stopped at an airport with one
