eleventen··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
Should people who missed out on formative life experiences all simply accept this? Decide they don’t deserve spiritual nourishment and trudge on with their mediocre lives? Self-actualize in a way you personally would find less cringe? We all get one spin, man.

Even if you’re right, Burning Man strikes me a symptom of a sick and hollow “normal” society.

eleventen··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
If everyone loses their jobs there will be no demand for the products and services those workers used to create.

A perfect ouroboros.

eleventen··on Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts
Now I want to watch the comments as a video too.
eleventen··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
That was totally unacceptable behavior. I support the choice to take down a video depicting blatant sexual harassment of its employees. I also support launching meta into the sun.
eleventen··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
In the short term you're probably right. But after a couple of years, complacency will take over and more and more decision making will get ofloaded. I don't think it's out of the question before 2030.
eleventen··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
That doesn't mean the humans aren't meat puppets.
eleventen··on Trump's 1,156 July Stock Trades Involved AI, Big Oil, Weapons-Makers, and More
For some context, Nancy Pelosi is the rep with the "worst" reputation among partisans for doing improper stock trading while in office.

She has 210 total trades since 2014.

eleventen··on Transit rewards
Exactly. No way to tell what's behind this. Once waymo has total market dominance and exists in every city, it's hard to imagine them continuing to support local transit. The thing about Embrace, Extend, Extinguish is nobody suspects it during the Embrace phase because good motives and bad motives look exactly the same.
eleventen··on Grok 4.7
For what it's worth, I've watched the vote fight on my comment swing back and fourth over the last hour. It got flagged, unflagged, and flagged again. It appears to now be locked and dead.

But I think it represents real malaise in the community. It's not a moderator plot, people here really just don't care and might even support this.

We really are in the minority of opinion for giving a damn about liberal democracy.

eleventen··on Grok 4.7
I think I already made my point, but I'll make it again.

Nobody both worked and spent their money to get Trump elected like Musk. 300 million to his 2024 campaign [1]. DOGE. On-stage endorsements. Nobody even came close.

No, other big labs are not "innocent little virgins", but they're not even in the same solar system of harm as Musk. To hand-wave at the differences is to permit them.

eleventen··on Grok 4.7
I have to say I'm a little perplexed by HN's perpetual willingness to use grok like it's a normal product made by a normal company.

There's often frustration that every thread related to a Musk company includes a discussion about Musk, but Musk himself caused that by being the only tech founder to actively campaign for Trump. (Zuck, the runner up, didn't do anything even close to this). Every product at every company he owns is hopelessly tethered to his decision to do that, and deserves to be judged on those terms.

Another popular story today is about US rollback of climate regulation [1] under Trump. Some fraction of every cent you spend on Grok goes to support stuff you hate, and yet people get genuinely annoyed when you point it out. Musk and his companies really _are_ special and should be treated as special.

Every thread about a Musk company or product needs a comment like this one. If we had the right values, every comment would look like this one.

eleventen··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Contempt for art is what this is.

For example, Sure, you can make a craven facsimile of punk art for your poster. But that art style signals to punks that other punks are going to be there. You would never reproduce that style using traditional methods because you are not a member of that artistic tradition.

You should keep the originals. They signal to AI slopsters that this is a great place to meet other slopsters.

I suspect they cannot, or else they would have on the website.
eleventen··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md

Anthropic in 2026: We are losing our market position. Users who adopted other harnesses have a degraded Claude Code experience because it doesn't recognize their AGENTS.md

eleventen··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
In defense of capsule, the Filesystem API is janky and has kind of shit UX. Less sophisticated users would probably prefer the UX of a purpose built tool.

I prefer worse UX for the sake of standards and zero install, but many people would prefer the opposite. I don't think Capsule is intended for the HN crowd.

eleventen··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
You can get a cheap approximation of this with chromium browsers + Filesystem API and a PWA manifest for that native-ish feel. AI has reignited my interest in building based 100% on browser native features.

eleventen··on Show HN: Toast, a beautiful by default in terminal IDE
I have long wanted a lightweight terminal-based editor that understands VS Code .code-workspace configuration files. https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/editing/workspaces/worksp...

I have so much shit now that I have custom workspaces to deal with because "repository" has stopped being the correct boundary to think about software development (for me). It would be great if _any_ decent editor would support these, especially Zed.

eleventen··on Herdr Studio
Look at that: https://github.com/kryptamine/herdr-auto-title

I must say I didn't know this existed. I looked into having the LLM name herdr sessions but found that tabs aren't addressable - the agent doesn't know which tab it's running in to target it for renaming.

The plugin is interesting and the defaults are terrible, but I think I could get what I need here. Thanks for your comment!

eleventen··on Herdr Studio
Eagerly awaiting https://www.superlogical.com/ TBH.
eleventen··on Herdr Studio
Herdr has been my daily driver for about a month now. It cant auto-name sessions like every other multiplexer though. That one stupid feature is so valuable I'm considering moving on.
eleventen··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I agree that AI is suppressing developer wage growth and taking real jobs. The opposite argument is being made elsewhere in the thread, and I think that argument is wrong.
eleventen··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Same. I use this to fix claudespeak. Any hypothetical token savings are just gravy.

eleventen··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Of course it would. Supply and demand. Some companies would decide not to bother. Others would decide it was worthwhile. The limited pool of supply (app developers) would be distributed across demand.
eleventen··on IBM Bob
What do you think is special about Carbon? It looks indistinguishable from any other design system to me.
eleventen··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
Are ya'll really repairing your phones? I replace mine when it can't run Google Maps smoothly anymore.

After 4-5 years, on every phone I've ever had, user interactions begin to lag noticeably. Apps launch much more slowly. Intense graphical apps like maps become frustrating to use. At some point I can't take it anymore and replace the phone, long before its physical parts or battery have worn out.

https://overtype.dev/ exists to let you do exactly this (for markdown). There’s also https://codemirror.net/ which is like Monaco but more lightweight.
