elevatedastalt··on IAC confirms existence of a Super-earth in the habitable zone of a Sun-like Star
I love that the planet is similar to Earth in mass and orbital time.

Feels like our older cousin from just 20Ly away

elevatedastalt··on Instagram deals reveal Meta is offering TikTok creators as much as $300k to post
I think your point about the grift is well-put.

But I disagree with your comment about YouTube. I think YouTube recommendations work extremely well, and I only see videos that are related to the 5-6 topics I am exploring on YouTube in the previous few weeks. And when I explore a new topic I start seeing those recommendations instead.

I have never seen a Mr Beast video (or any other video by similar hucksters) on my feed.

You do need to be logged in though. But I use Premium, so that's a given.

elevatedastalt··on Google open-sources the Pebble OS
People passing cynical comments at Google need to understand that at a big co like Google, something like this doesn't 'just happen'. It probably happened because some passionate L6/L7 engineer wanted to do it and pushed through the bureaucracy to get approvals for it, probably largely on their own time (by which I mean that this was at best a side-project for them and at worst a distraction that was losing them favor with their bosses). At every point in the process, they probably had to justify what they were doing to their leads, to lawyers, to privacy reviewers, who had no real stake in it and so had nothing to lose by saying No. They almost certainly won't receive any career progress out of this and would risk a setback if something slips through the cracks (such as some unredacted proprietary information).

They did it because they felt it was the right thing to do. Good things happen through the actions of individuals like this. We should acknowledge and celebrate it when they do, anti-big-tech cynicism can wait.

elevatedastalt··on DeepSeek releases Janus Pro, a text-to-image generator [pdf]
It's extra funny coz most of the top American LLM products have censorship stuffed to their gills.
elevatedastalt··on Astronomers delete asteroid because it turned out to be Tesla Roadster
There are signs

> At the time, it received a great deal of notoriety

No, it had received a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, or at best people said it was a gimmick / stunt. Where is the "notoriety" coming from?

elevatedastalt··on Former tech CEO suing to get the record of his arrest removed from the internet
Unfortunately many people have unique enough names that that much will be bad enough.
elevatedastalt··on Former tech CEO suing to get the record of his arrest removed from the internet
Sure. Would you agree to making arrest a protected category in the US so that it can't be used for decision making?

Coz employers, potential spouses, or heck even potential friends aren't going to share your loft ideals.

elevatedastalt··on Lessons in creating family photos that people want to keep (2018)
I've read lots of bizarre stuff on HN but this one really takes the cake.

I'm not even going to argue coz something tells me it's going to be futile.

elevatedastalt··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
Except now you end up with folks who probably ran some analysis or submitted some code changes getting thousands of citations on Google Scholar for DeepSeek.
elevatedastalt··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Congratulations!

Just curious, usually being purchased by a Private Equity firm spells a death knell for the company. Of course at the right price it makes sense that you wanted to sell it away, but what are your thoughts about what will happen to the company now?

elevatedastalt··on Master the Art of the Product Manager 'No'
Usually most engineers have some slack time and can pick things up to fix. The problem is not in them doing that. The issues arrises in one of two things—

[1] They either use the fact that they are fixing that thing as an excuse to not work on or deliver on time a different, more important task. If that happens, obvious questions about prioritization occur.

[2] They want a substantial amount of credit or recognition for doing it. Usually such fixes don't receive exec attention (since execs are tracking more important projects) and so don't get the same due as a properly tracked project does.

elevatedastalt··on Reverse engineering my #1 Hacker News article
I think we should. This sort of hustling is exactly why most of the internet is now completely unreadable. I didn't see the original post but if I had, I'd have probably flagged it for the clickbait content-less title.
elevatedastalt··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Agreed in general, but is it reasonable to say to people living in multi-million dollar houses on some of the world's most coveted real estate that they are should assume the risks of it? Or move?
elevatedastalt··on No Calls
So you agree that when companies want to truly give a customized experience to their customers, they would get on a call with them? I guess we are on the same page then.
elevatedastalt··on No Calls
A 100K car is a commodity product with very limited customization.

If you don't like the car, the manufacturer is not going to make a new one for you personally.

A large SaaS customer is the opposite.

elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
What am I presuming? Most social media platforms let you have post-level privacy settings.

If a kid wants to post something that they don't want their parents to see they can exclude them from seeing the post

elevatedastalt··on Hotel booking sites overcharge Bay Area customers
Isn't that something socialists would actually champion?
elevatedastalt··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
Varies. What I have seen happening often is that many teams end up with a mix of very tenured people (who are strong contributors and who are sticking around for whatever reasons), and new hires who are too early in the role to be properly evaluated or to be thrown the lowest rating at.
elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
I've seen a wide spectrum in that. There are those that only wheel out the mind-numbing Youtube videos as a last resort, but I have seen other parents where the kid basically never has dinner without staring at a screen.
elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
> one of your parents will be your 'friend'

That doesn't do much since they will just keep the spicy posts hidden from the parent.

elevatedastalt··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
It's understandable that in an organization that hasn't tightened its screws on employees, you will be able to find 5% low performers. But do you expect to find 5% low performers even after 5 iterations of these firings? Like eventually you are left only with medium to high performers, and you are just making their lives miserable by turning work into a meaningless Hunger Games season.
elevatedastalt··on Sonos CEO steps down after app update debacle
These sound like extremely technical decisions that presumably engineering leads in the company came up with, signed-off on, and convinced leadership to go ahead with.

I doubt a Salesperson has the technical expertise to initiate any of those changes.

elevatedastalt··on Stop Trying to Schedule a Call with Me
Emergency calls often come from people NOT in your contacts. That's why you provide emergency contacts on forms. If something goes wrong at work for example, someone from the office would call, not your spouse themselves.
elevatedastalt··on Stop Trying to Schedule a Call with Me
I presume you are an emergency contact for some people? Maybe a spouse, or a kid? Or even a friend? What's your contingency for when they are lying bleeding somewhere and someone can't reach you since they are not on your contact list?
elevatedastalt··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
OP is referring to a homeless Indian in the US, not in India.
elevatedastalt··on LA wildfires force thousands to evacuate, NASA JPL closed
So the proposal is for 350 Million people to move to New England?
elevatedastalt··on A rare alignment of 7 planets is about to take place
No a telescope won't help. The 'linear' alignment spans the whole sky and is best seen with the naked eye.

You can click a pic with a wide-angle lens (whether on your phone or a camera).

elevatedastalt··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
To be fair, he was not calling people at Loom NPCs. He was saying that he didn't feel like joining a big company Atlassian coz he feels he would be surrounded by "NPC coworkers" there.
elevatedastalt··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
They will be independent humans who can choose the find it the way they want, including by having kids of their own if that works for them.
elevatedastalt··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
No, the act of raising a kid itself gives people purpose, so it's not a pyramid scheme by any means, but let's not let facts come in the way of a zinger of a one-liner I guess?
