elevaet··on Anthropic's biolab made a discovery it's comparing to CRISPR

elevaet··on Use Rounded Rectangles
This doesn't really explain why to round the rectangles at all, the logical conclusion of the points in this post is to use square corners
elevaet··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Yeah, let's not forget defence budgets that are spent to prop up oil availability too.
elevaet··on Show HN: Neobrutalism.dev – Just added Base UI support and added new color theme
Neobrutalism has been around long enough as a web style (ca. 2021?) that the name has already stuck, but you're totally right.
elevaet··on Scientists observe Einstein's gravity in the quantum world
I'm way in over my depth here, but does this maybe that the unification of gravity and quantum physics is further out of reach than we might have hoped? Because it would be easier if gravity disappeared at quantum scales - then it could be understood as an emergent property that emerges out of quantum when you move to bigger scales. But now we have to find something that underlies both.
elevaet··on Electric rain can eat through metal
Great question. You can get some really pronounced rain erosion grooves and patterns on limestone, I wonder if this effect is part of the story, or if it's just normal dissolving going on.
elevaet··on The Vespa at 80
There's a culture for modding Vespas in Indonesia that I think HN folks would find interesing - check out "Vespa extreme"/"Vespa gembel" - sort of like if mad-max was in the jungle culture of chopping and rebuilding old Vespas into all sorts of wild road machines. Pretty interesting kind of hippie/punk subculture.
elevaet··on The Competitive Moat That AI Can't Replicate
Or Gojek!
elevaet··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
What's working for our family (2 boys) is: restricted screen time, no phones until 14, heavy parental controls on devices when they do get them, rationed gaming on weekends only (2 sessions of 1h20 each), enforced reading time before bed, lots of sports.

Both of our kids read a lot, one is a bookworm, the other could take it or leave it tbh, but at least he can sit down and read, which is not a skill to be taken for granted anymore unfortunately.

elevaet··on Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore Story (2023)
Not a natural resource per-se, but Singapore's geographic location is very special wrt global trade and strategy, being at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula and in the Straight of Malacca. It's been a port and a nexus as a result for hundreds of years, a huge part of the equation of Singapore's success story.

edit: wikipedia says 25% of the world's trade flows through the Straight of Malacca - it's a big deal!

elevaet··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious
I completely agree, and came here to say the same thing but thought I'd check if someone else mentioned it first. I also have a hard time articulating it, but my intuition is that it's more of a prerequisite than embodiment is. I've never seen a great rationale for why embodiment matters.
elevaet··on Adafruit receives demand letter from Fenwick legal counsel on behalf of Flux.ai
Cool to see you on here ladyada, been a big fan since x0xb0x. I've always appreciated your conduct online, and will be cheering for the best possible outcome in this situation for you.
elevaet··on Starship V3
Can you explain why and how we would build cities on Mars if we found an alien shipwreck there? That doesn't make any sense to me.

It would likely cost bare minimum 10-100 billion dollars to put a few boots on the ground on Mars, how could we possibly build cities there within the end of the decade?

elevaet··on Starship V3
No air, scarce water, radiation challenges. Comms to earth has a 3min lag on a good day, 6mins roundtrip. On a bad day it's 45mins.

We are better off at this stage of human civilization to look at building resiliency and redundancy at home. Settling margins of Earth in places like Antarctica, underground, under water is many orders of magnitude simpler than Mars, provides useful models for distant future space colonization, and also provides us with some of the civilizational redundancy and resiliency many space-colony-enthusiasts are looking for.

elevaet··on Starship V3
Obviously there are research stations on Antarctica. And presumable your argument is that these are "permanent"? My point is that they are not, not in the sense that we will need for Mars. No one lives there full time, people aren't raising families there, they are very dependent on regular deliveries from the outside.

Supply runs to Mars will be in the range of 10000x as expensive, possibly even higher. Something that costs $100 to get to Antarctica will cost $1million to get to Mars. Permanent Mars settlement will entail a level of self-sufficiency that we haven't proven on a place that is comparitively balmy and has the benefit of a breathable atmosphere and abundant water (Antarctica). Not to mention radiation...

Don't hold your breath. I'm as much a fan of space colonization of as the next nerd, but it's premature.

elevaet··on Starship V3
We don't even have permanent settlements on Antarctica. Don't hold your breath.
elevaet··on UCLA discovers first stroke rehabilitation drug to repair brain damage (2025)
DDL-920, which apparently looks like this: https://www.probechem.com/userfiles/product/PC-22875.gif

"DDL-920 is a potent, selective and brain permeable negative allosteric modulator (NAM) of the γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABARs), inhibits parvalbumin (PV) expressing interneurons (PV+INs) and consequently enhances γ-oscillations both in vitro and in vivo."

elevaet··on I Cancelled Claude: Token Issues, Declining Quality, and Poor Support
I've been very happy using Codex in the VScode extension. Very high quality coding and generous token limits. I've been running Claude in the CLI over the last couple of months to compare and overall I prefer Codex, but would be happy with either.
elevaet··on Scoring Show HN submissions for AI design patterns
Yeah they are the trend, so they will probably cause a polarized response - some will find it cliche and reject it, others will coalesce around the standard.
elevaet··on Scoring Show HN submissions for AI design patterns
This is great, now we can better disguise slopware!
elevaet··on The Cognitive Dark Forest
> Except literally going outside and just talking to people? Using whiteboards?

> Also, you fed it when you used a model to write this blog post. You didn't have to do that.

my thoughts exactly

elevaet··on Show HN: Moongate – Ultima Online server emulator in .NET 10 with Lua scripting
Cool, nice work!

I've been building a MORPG version of a kind of Ultima 3.5 on the side in spurts for the last 5 years using Go, postgres, and React on the frontend. Top view tile graphics, old school keyboard control/commands. It's pretty janky still, but I hope to do a Show HN at some point.

I think I need to take some inspiration from you and partition the world into sectors, I have a n^2 scaling problem right now as there are more PC and NPC in the world.

elevaet··on Why Developers Keep Choosing Claude over Every Other AI
How often do you hit your usage limits with Claude Pro?
elevaet··on Why Developers Keep Choosing Claude over Every Other AI
I am too, and haven't really given Anthropic's stuff a fair shake as a result, and am so curious if I'm missing out or if it's the same shit different pile.
elevaet··on Canadians promised to boycott travel to US. They meant it
There were lots of places in the USA that (as a Canadian) my family and friends loved visiting - Kauai for hiking and beaches, Mt. Baker for skiing, bay area for all the weird stuff that goes on there, Nevada for that thing in the desert, Oregon coast for surfing, Utah-area parks like you said, hiking in Washington.

Lots of amazing outdoor adventures to be had in the USA. Now days I don't know anyone that goes to the states.

elevaet··on Resistance training load does not determine hypertrophy
What about the old gym adage "training to failure is failing to train" - is there any physiological basis for this, or is it mental, or just a myth?
elevaet··on Google releases its new Google Sans Flex font as open source
Are there any great variable and open serif web fonts around?
elevaet··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
Another risk is just loosing your keys.

I bet it happens a lot more than people like to talk about.

elevaet··on Minerals represent potential biosignatures in the search for life on Mars
They keep pushing back the date of the LUCA - I think it's meant to be 4.2 billion years ago now, a time when Mars was more nurturing than it is now, maybe moreso than Earth at the time? I hope we find out it started on Mars and jumped to Earth, how cool would that be?
elevaet··on Children and young people's reading in 2025
Yeah I agree with you. I think it's a good approach to check vibes against data and vice-versa, and not blindly trust one over the other - use one to look critically at the other. They both have defects.
