elektor··on Dark Reader – enable Dark Mode on Wikipedia and many other websites
This app is a godsend for people with eye floaters.
elektor··on Reviewmeta.com – Amazon Review Checker
I've gone past this stage and just stopped shopping at Amazon. There are just too many fakes/counterfeits for my risk tolerance.
elektor··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
Not talking about your salary only benefits the employer and allows them to deflate workers wages.
elektor··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
That's a valid point but millions of people live and work in SF, NY, LA, and DC. Their needs for housing should be acknowledged as well.
elektor··on Show HN: Tired of reading NerdWallet to see the best credit card? I automated it
Feedback: I registered, connected 1 card via Plaid and am now getting a 500 Internal Server Error.
elektor··on Noprocrast (2010)
You can install NextDNS and use their blacklist feature to block distracting websites.

What’s the benefit of using Privacy Possum over Badger?
elektor··on Launch HN: Yotta Savings (YC S20) – Behavioral psychology to help people save
This is a very cool idea, Adam and Ben.

I have one minor feedback: On the bank comparison portion of the site, you list Marcus as having 1.7% APY, when it is actually 1.05% APY. These savings rate having been pretty volatile in the past few months so it's understandable but I figure updating it to its current % makes your product look even better in comparison.

elektor··on SARS-CoV-2 detected in Barcelona sewage water sample from March 2019
The usual reminder for these articles:

This article is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed. It reports new medical research that has yet to be evaluated and so should not be used to guide clinical practice.

elektor··on A mathematical formula that predicts US elections with 87.5% accuracy
The article is hosted by a real software product so it’s not likely this is satire.
elektor··on Text-Only Websites
I would love a text-only Reddit if that exists.
elektor··on LibriVox: Free Public Domain Audiobooks
Bound was the best $4 I’ve spent on an app, thanks Tim.
elektor··on Google bans ZeroHedge and The Federalist from its ad platform
They are currently using a service calling PayoLee:

elektor··on Google bans ZeroHedge and The Federalist from its ad platform
For context, ZeroHedge [1] has an estimated 36 million monthly visits. The Federalist has 7 million.

They could probably run off donations with that sort of traffic. They have a blogpost on this event and they end it with a donation link so it'd be interesting to see if this pushes them to be self-sufficient.

elektor··on Google2Csv is a simple Google scraper that saves the results on a CSV file
If you're looking to do any serious search engine scraping, you'll find yourself needing to use proxies.

For my thesis which required millions of datapoints, I used this tool: http://www.scrapebox.com/

elektor··on Negative News Distorts Our Thinking
I subscribe to a handful of positive newsletters to help counteract the barrage of daily negative news. Some of my recommendations:

1) The Guardian's Upside https://www.theguardian.com/world/series/the-upside-weekly-r...

2) Future Crunch https://futurecrunch.substack.com/

3) Positive News https://www.positive.news/

elektor··on Show HN: Telehealth-Tracker – built to help my wife with her new workload
This looks great! Any chance for CSV export?
elektor··on Jitsi Meet, the open source Zoom alternative, was downloaded 1.4M times in March
This is my go to app for casual video chats while we’re all quarantined. At work my team uses WebEx and Microsoft Teams.
elektor··on Launch HN: Probably Genetic (YC W19): At-home DNA testing for every gene
Harley and Lukas, this looks like a very promising start-up and especially timely for Rare Disease Week. Congrats on the launch!

My question to you: You've made a comparison of your service to 23andMe in your post, can you provide some similar insight as to why your service would be preferable to Dante Labs? They claim to provide a "Whole Genome Sequencing Full DNA Test (30X)" [1]

Thank you!

elektor··on News startup Scroll debuts today with ad-free access to ~300 partners
I've been using the beta version of Scroll and have been really happy with it, particularly on mobile
elektor··on Please Stop Posting Medium and NYT and WP Articles
Apple News and https://scroll.com/ come to mind.
elektor··on Too Good to Go: An App for Fighting Food Waste
Excellent idea! I've found a similar US-based app called OLIO.
elektor··on The Case for Eliminating Fines on Overdue Library Books
This is why I'm a big fan of Overdrive/Libby. I check out a lot of audiobooks and they get automatically returned after 21 days, so I don't have to worry about any late fees.
elektor··on A rise in vegetarian options leads customers to embrace meat-free meals
Speaking from personal experience, I've been eating a lot more plant-based meals now that Beyond and Impossible Beef are available in grocery stores. I wouldn't say I'm completely vegetarian but I'm 60% there.
elektor··on Echo Frames – Eyeglasses with Alexa
Are there any legitimate glasses with a camera instead of a microphone?
elektor··on The worrying state of Mediterranean fish stocks (2017)
I've cut down my fish consumption considerably after reading similar headlines a few years ago. Luckily, there's a lot of plant-based options available.

elektor··on [dead]
He played such a big role in politics for the past decade. It will be interesting to see the impact of this on the 2020 election.
elektor··on The underground farm growing salad crops in a disused air raid shelter [video]
There is an org that does something similar in New Jersey: AeroFarms. Their greens are sold at the local Whole Foods. It's pretty neat to get your food grown locally.

elektor··on Ask HN: Best way (HW&SW) to digitize family photo albums?
For a low-cost solution, you should consider Google PhotoScan.
