elektor··on Launch HN: Aqua Voice (YC W24) – Voice-driven text editor
Trying out the app on Firefox gets me this error:

NotSupportedError:

AudioContext.createMediaStreamSource:

Connecting AudioNodes from AudioContexts with different sample-rate is currently not supported.

I would add that this really needs to be a native app with ability to use it within Microsoft Word, which itself has a decent voice to text tool built in.

elektor··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
Thanks! I'll try it out
elektor··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
Where are you accessing Zotero V7? My understanding is that it is currently V6.[1]

elektor··on Cystic fibrosis breakthrough has given patients a chance to live longer
"In 2037 the patent will run out, and the generic price will likely be 90% less."

Unfortunately, that's not guaranteed to bring a price drop. Humira is a good example of that; it recently went generic but much of the savings went to higher rebates to pharmacy benefits managers.

elektor··on FDA Designates MM120 (LSD) Breakthrough Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
The drug gets expedited review and increased assistance from the FDA. It's a good thing to have if you're trying to get it on the US market.
elektor··on Kagi and Wolfram
This is a wonderful and fitting collab!
elektor··on CO2 emissions reached record high in 2023 – IEA
Yes, and expected to peak at 10.4 billion in 2086 although that may be an overestimate given how fast some of the East Asian countries' birth rates have plummeted in recent years.

elektor··on Show HN: Predictive text using only 13kb of JavaScript. no LLM
This exists on a word level.

elektor··on Plasticity through patterned ultrasound-induced brainwave entrainment in mice
Thanks! I tried the app out and was really blown away by how good the voice quality was. Definitely interested to see this project make progress!

This is neat! How much is reading one PDF costing you? I saw in your previous post you were using OpenAI to process the text to speech.
elektor··on Ask HN: Alternative to Mint.com?
I've switched to a paid annual plan with Monarch Money. The app is sleek and it works fine, but I'm open to switching over to something open-sourced and/or free.
elektor··on YouTube Says It Has More Than 100M Premium and Music Subscribers
They've added more than 20 million subscribers since their last update in Nov 2022. It looks like their war on ad-blockers is paying off.
elektor··on 23andMe tells victims it's their fault that their data was breached
As someone who is excited about the potential of using DNA tech for new drug discovery, I’m really sad to see 23andme handle this so poorly. I’m seriously considering not doing their periodic health surveys given this incident + them putting updated health reports behind a paywall.

Luckily I’m also in the NIH All of Us program and they’re at least better about data safety (for now?).

elektor··on U.S. cities opt to ditch their off-street parking minimums
There is a thorough book on this topic, Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World. Highly recommend it if you're interested in the causes of so much of our dysfunction in housing costs.

elektor··on Show HN: I made TV Sort, a web-based game for ranking TV show episodes
This is pretty neat! For quite some time I’ve yearned for a tool like this to be able to rank my favorite songs of an artist (embedded Spotify 30 second clips?) and other custom media like comic strips.
elektor··on A New Look for Bluesky: The Social Butterfly
If you want more of the old school Twitter public square, you, then the Discourse feed where you want to be:

elektor··on A New Look for Bluesky: The Social Butterfly
They buried the important piece:

"Starting today, you can easily view Bluesky posts without being logged in. Sharing will be more convenient — whether it's a joke you want to text a friend, or a post you want to embed in an article."

elektor··on Spotify's push into audiobooks sparks concern among authors
I just tried out Readwise Reader's speech feature and it looks like they use Unreal Speech[1]. The "Liv" voice sounded pretty realistic.

elektor··on Goodreads asks users to help combat 'review bombing'
I too have given up on Goodreads and relocated to StoryGraph (https://thestorygraph.com/)
elektor··on Fastmail Employees Form a Union
Congrats to the team! This might be the reminder I needed to finally subscribe. Gmail’s spam filter has been nonexistent for the past month (300+ clearly spammy email reaching my inbox).
elektor··on Arc browser launches its Windows client in beta
I suffer from the same problem and my new solution has been to install a Firefox extension that, when I have more than 5 tabs open, closes any tabs that’s been idle longer than 5 minutes.

I found that with this approach I still get the dopamine hit without getting stuck sifting through 30 articles.

elektor··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
It's on sale right now at $149, I just bought it thanks to your comment!
elektor··on FDA approves a CRISPR-based medicine for treatment of sickle cell disease
No, I did not "answer my own question". These therapies are priced at $2.2 and $3.1 million, much greater than their calculated cost-effective price. And these are not small molecules that can be easily made generic, so not likely to get that much cheaper over time.
elektor··on FDA approves a CRISPR-based medicine for treatment of sickle cell disease
Now comes the hard question, how will the US payer system afford it?

"An August report from the nonprofit Institute for Clinical and Economic Review found that the treatment and similar gene-editing therapies for sickle cell disease would be cost-effective if priced between $1.35 million and $2.05 million. In the U.S., patients with the condition and their insurers pay on average between $1.6 million and $1.7 million for disease management over the course of a lifetime." elektor··on Budgeting app Mint is shutting down
I've switched over to a paid plan with Monarch Money.
elektor··on Show HN: I Brought Edge Copilot to Chrome
The Chrome webstore listing is dead
elektor··on Show HN: Amount.app – Personal Finance Tooling
Respectfully, this is a premature Show HN. -No product, just a waitlist sign up -Twitter account with no followers -First noted feature is "crypto feature integrations", bit of a red flag
elektor··on Ask HN: Are there valid Google Search alternatives?
That's the beauty of Kagi, you can hide and downrank the noise and junk websites so that you only get the high-quality domains you're looking for.
elektor··on BBC gives up on Threads, sticks with Mastodon
> BlueSky

I've been on it since June and quite like it. It's really picked up in the last month and has hit mainstream with the AcademicTwitter crowd.

elektor··on Anonfiles is shutting down
Thanks for the correction. I was under the impression that it was only around for 2 years, not 5 :)
