elb0w··on SSH productivity tips
Just a warning with shared sessions. If you use in shell vi be aware that killing your first connection will kill that other shell you are working in.
elb0w··on A lack of sleep can kill you
Url broken for me
elb0w··on Learn Perl in about 2 hours 30 minutes

elb0w··on House Committee Approves Bill Mandating That Companies Spy on Their Users
And next bill will require all ISP's to run daily searches across the data looking for copyrighted material and other criteria that they will deem as "A threat to america"..........
elb0w··on House panel approves broadened ISP snooping bill
Well I guess we need to write a screensaver that crawls the web. Maybe when ISP's have to spend $ on all this storage it will give them incentive to fight this. I remember land of the free .. This doesnt feel like freedom..
elb0w··on I'm starting a new magazine, The Startup Magazine
Just don't start suing people for using the word "Startup" like some other entrepreneur(ial) magazine.
elb0w··on Tell HN: We just got screwed by PayPal
They should not allow you to use the service if it is not approved. A bank wouldn't let you spend the money before you get approved for the loan.
elb0w··on Tell HN: We just got screwed by PayPal
Thank you, I will check these out
elb0w··on Tell HN: We just got screwed by PayPal
Yeah, they should really make this known before invalidating an account based on it.
elb0w··on Sitting for hours can shave years off life
So if I read the first few paragraphs correctly, Sitting in a chair all day gives men an 80% chance not to get cancer. Sounds pretty sweet to me.
elb0w··on Show HN: My weekend project, QR-codes for everybody
Anyone else have an issue with this generating a url for ssl? All of mine resolve to lilqr.com. Http works fine though.
elb0w··on Speed up your eclipse as a super fast IDE
or use vim
elb0w··on Show HN: I wrote a co-founder equity calculator over the weekend
I dont agree with this calculator, you should provide references, research, concepts, reasoning. I cant fathom someone using this seriously, plus the fake accounts is a little lame for a HN post.
elb0w··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday
I work at the NYSE, anytime something like this happens there would be a roll back. You cannot have a functioning stock market without this feature it would be chaos.
elb0w··on DuckDuckGo: Escape your search engine filter bubble
I noticed this a long time ago. Suddenly I could ask general programming questions and it popped up results in the language I use primarily as the top results (Without me specifying it).

While some may think that this is hiding, do we not often create algorithms to asses and aide? It seems like disabling this would be against the advancement of a learning system.

I for one think its a great feature and have no desire to disable it.

elb0w··on Ask HN: Possible to recover from being a frustrated mediocrity for 30+ years?
Time and Experience should not go hand and hand, so dont let that stress you out. I have worked with some devs in their 40+ that are horrible.

It seems like you know what you want, you are just afraid to try and lack the motivation.

My advice, step away from the computer for a couple hours a day. Take a walk or do some exercise, you would be amazed at how much that changes your mindset for the better.

Unfortunately there is no magic words of advice or book you can read to solve your problems. Sometimes you just need to man up, put the cards on the table and do what needs to get done.

Best of luck, hang in there.

elb0w··on Why Groupon Is Poised For Collapse
Anyone else getting tired of these? Why are these companies not being held responsible for their own negligence? If you do not do the math and cannot afford to lose the money then how dare you agree to the terms.

This is not on Groupon or any other Daily Deal service. It solely relies on the Small Business owner that does not do his due diligence.

This model is no different than bulk purchasing from a supplier. However, the supplier still makes money because they have figured out how much they can give to still turn a profit.

Small business owners need to either look at how much they stand to lose or take this as a advertising expense that they can afford.

The whole get money now and cry about it when people actually expect to collect what they were promised is ridiculous, where do they think the money comes from?

If you want to say that this model is only sustainable as long as small business owners are incompetent then yes, lets say that. However, to say that this business model is bad based on Groupons lies is just ridiculous. No one is holding a gun to your head and saying, give us coupons for all your stuff.

elb0w··on Ask HN: HN On irc.freenode.net?

elb0w··on What laptop bag do you use?

elb0w··on What laptop bag do you use?

elb0w··on Mailgun (YC W11) Raises $1.1 Million For Its "Twilio For Email"
Honestly just to add, I like this product so much that i've considered porting their helper libs to every language they don't already cover.
elb0w··on Mailgun (YC W11) Raises $1.1 Million For Its "Twilio For Email"
This is literally the greatest service I have come across. Honestly, it was like a godsend, all day I was studying on all these little details required to having a solid, protected, non-blacklisted, works on ec2, stable, spam-free, e-mail server.

After hours of configuring postfix and looking at files I never wanted to even know about I took a break on HN.

Then I saw Mailgun, boom.. problem solved. (With more bells and whistles then I even imagined)

I've now saved part of my life thanks to this product.

Even chatted with one of their dev's who is extremely helpful. This is the kind of company I would want to invest in.
