elastic_church··on Bitcoin Unlimited Miners May Be Preparing a 51% Attack
Existing bitcoins are not in danger.

This is the primary confidence the market has amongst any of these perpetual emergencies, acquire all the bitcoin you want and ignore it.

When you want to transact on the bitcoin network, moving bitcoin from one address to another, thats when you want to be aware of this stuff.

elastic_church··on It’s now illegal in Russia to share an image of Putin as a gay clown
careful, some people are going to misinterpret your accurate assessment of laws that are completely benign to the collective conscious as a "whataboutism" simply because the soviets made equally accurate assessments of civil rights double standards
elastic_church··on Uber finds one allegedly stolen Waymo file on an employee’s personal device
Its actually really impressive that Uber is standing behind him at all. Nobodies get fired from their job from any old baseless accusation.
elastic_church··on Hackathon hustlers who make a living from corporate coding contests
yeah that was my experience with a few hackathons too, it wasn't at all what I expected. And a powerpoint presentation with static HTML pages got a prize in that one as well.

I usually go to get in the zone with some new technologies around like minded people, and not really about the theme of the hackathon itself. A lot of hackathons have tons of tertiary prizes and networking opportunities.

Unlike other places with a tech scene, Silicon Valley has an industry that caters to unskilled and wannabe programmers that aren't currently into programming at all. Hackathons, Meetups and the coding schools are at the center of that. So you shouldn't expect actual deep technology discussions at those particular things, you will be underwhelmed.

elastic_church··on Ask HN: Tell us about your S2017 startup
yeah you're gonna have to define low latency here

what are you doing differently to solve the predictable latency problem? having all the processing happening in the compute cluster so that there isn't enough back and forth to the ground to notice?

elastic_church··on Why I will not exercise my GitLab stock options
Give them to ESO fund so someone can take the risk to make a buck off of the options!

Its a good deal and nobody cares about your emotions. (ESO fund just fronts the capital for you to buy the shares you are entitled to, and makes a separate contract entitling them to some profits, risk free for you)

Silly to spend that much of your life just to weigh $4000 or so and write a blog post the circumstances leading up to that decision, when there's infrastructure to remove the decision making process out of it.

elastic_church··on The Lasting Consequences of Student Debt
You're right

One aspect that supports useless degree seekers is that it's not about "today's" job market, its about having the degree forever to give an advantage in any job market

Oops!

The first thing the mob will do is come for the intelligentsia so no use telling people that their parents were wrong or that they were gullible

elastic_church··on Student Debt Giant Navient to Borrowers: You’re on Your Own
When public agencies push for more than kickback money, they always run the risk of being declared unconstitutional in a costly court battle that at best case undermines the agencies' budget.

The CFPB is young and they might have bat higher than they should have.

Take a page out of the SEC playback and settle for kickbacks.

elastic_church··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
Hm thats weird, I was a junior engineer and living in Manhattan. And aside from simply being able to afford it with less than 30% of your monthly income, there are more than enough ways to get lucky on rent in NYC.
elastic_church··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
OH yeah it is so easy to take for granted how disinterested, uncomfortable and angry people will get at listening to your tech project, in most places.
elastic_church··on Why F.E.A.R.’s AI is still the best in first-person shooters
yes blame the ping
elastic_church··on 'Hitler Tamed by Prison' (1924)
I haven't read Mein Kampf and my understanding of the final solution was that it was the last of several 'solutions', most of which didn't involve genocide so is the 'desire' for a genocidal war that accurate?

Secondly, what of his twisted advisors? I think it would be fascinating to read tertiary literature of sentiment in that era and how people with those sentiments gained influence.

elastic_church··on Tesla Passes Ford by Market Value
Tesla probably has a premium partly because of the exclusiveness of ownership and the features that come with those vehicles
elastic_church··on Bargain Travel Sites May No Longer Be Bargains
So how does Google flights compare
elastic_church··on Why are The Economist’s writers anonymous?
It avoids ad hominem attacks over decent independent research.

Maybe you don't want to read Peter Theil's view of how the tech sector will change in America even if it was a spot on analysis

elastic_church··on Movie Business Scrambles to Adapt to Changing Consumer Demand
Anime isnt different. Different tropes same tropes.

Deviations are too risky for studios and they all want to be picked up by America where possible

elastic_church··on Amazon launches its own social media influencer program into beta
Nice maybe they buy up competition
elastic_church··on Most of Mars' air was 'lost to space'
I thought there was an isotope within mars water samples (or the dirt) that would allow water to stay in the liquid state at much lower temperatures
elastic_church··on Robinhood stock trading app valued at $1.3B with big raise from DST
> Not having capital isn't the same as being unsophisticated.

Except in the regulatory framework we live in worldwide.

elastic_church··on Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook
Wow! Alright
elastic_church··on The Mandelwat Set
I think this just benchmarked my browser.
elastic_church··on Uber’s Anthony Levandowski Invokes Fifth Amendment Rights in Waymo Suit
You see Venezuala's Supreme Court reinterpreted the validity of their democratically elected representatives today? lol!
elastic_church··on Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook
Hm ... given Oculus' continued hegemony in the market place, and the high reward of supporting the United States' winning administration in the global marketplace, couldn't he just as easily not.... done anything?

Like there are still devs on Oculus, Trump won, every one with clout that supported him is now in power, and I personally had no idea

uhm yah he's probably got a lucrative VR contract signed up w/ DARPA, I think this is all show

elastic_church··on Wall Street's WhatsApp Secret: Illegal Texting Is Out of Control
I don't want the government I pay to spend ANY time on this. I like to think of budget accountability as scrutinizing your partner over their spending decisions in a joint bank account. Just stop wasting time and money on that!
elastic_church··on Uber’s Anthony Levandowski Invokes Fifth Amendment Rights in Waymo Suit
so long... thats not handy at all, on the go at least

but I wish that lawyers could produce these flow charts when they say "it depends"

elastic_church··on 76% of high-performance employees say trade mastery, not money, most important
ha yeah none of them are to do the same job in Poland for 1/5th the wages. its like the question itself means something else to most people, in order for them to say "no" to it, but every onlooker could see a clear relationship to money.
elastic_church··on Big Tech Company Salaries Are Hurting Startups
The person that had asked to interviewing me at one of those companies liked my competence and experience in certain areas, seemingly missing that I worked for the same scale of companies that he decided to rail against
elastic_church··on Big Tech Company Salaries Are Hurting Startups
> But there are plenty of great engineers that don't want to work at those companies for various reasons.

There's something in the water at the big companies, many employees there think they have passed a rite of passage and that EVERYONE NOT WORKING THERE simply didn't pass.

I wish I wasn't exposed to evidence of this, but unfortunately I have. Many people don't consider the idea that others just don't want to work there.

In one example of this, I was brought in to interview at one of the big ones, referral, special project. I liked the idea of not necessarily being just some pawn in the never-ending recruitment draft, but someone on a special project.

And here I am, talking with the project manager and how other organizations sometimes do custom integrations into their enterprise product. Regarding those other organizations, and I quote "Now this is some 100 million dollar company in Canada, so you know their engineers don't know anything"

and I'm like YOU KNOW I WORK FOR 100 MILLION DOLLAR COMPANIES... RIGHT? I work in Series A and Series B startups primarily, after their 12 million funding rounds close they its often at a 50 - 100 million paper valuation.

The hubris....

Other examples are what I've heard from bus drivers talking about their riders, other engineers that disagree with the hubris, and just the general society that also puts Googlers and other big tech company employees on a pedestal because of the enviable compensation and perks.

elastic_church··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
> Stories like that encourage Guha to persist with the project, he said, even though patents on his invention have long since expired and he won’t see any personal financial gain even if it takes off worldwide.

Hm, in America you can get a patent term extension due to regulatory delays in bringing a product to market at other agencies, such as the FDA

Does that not exist in India?

elastic_church··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
> There used to be a time when we as a society valued things like self-control, discipline, and tradition. No more.

Despite those values it never worked for preventing children.

A lot of us here just accept that reality and are open to removing the human element from it.
