elastic_church··on Introducing Increment
Nice, I'd been wishing for a "devops" book full of case studies - what situations teams were in and how they handled it. Occasionally you get an engineering blog post, but most of those are just boasting unilaterally about a solution, and not any critical discussion of the problem or the myriad of bandaids most of us have to deal with.

This might be a step in the right direction.

elastic_church··on Russian FOSS activist arrested in Russia for his Tor exit-node
Just buy the bitcoin. The objective is to unlink the transaction later. Using cryptocurrency should be a completely benign action, and if there's any ounce of thought in your mind that makes you think it is an admission of "I'm doing something sketchy", then that's more reason to buy cryptocurrency and use it everywhere for completely benign things. Just like most contrived trends, you do it ironically until it is an actual habit.

For unlinking, Monero (cryptonote technology) is the private cryptocurrency to use today. The primary different between competitors is that Monero is private by default. Other 'private cryptocurrencies' are public by default with an optional privacy gimmick (see mixers, Dash, Zcash). Transparency is the optional gimmick in cryptonote.

You want to keep a balance of Monero, and use services like Shapeshift, over TOR, to pay for invoices priced in bitcoin.

Exchanges like Kraken allow you to buy Monero directly nowadays with USD. So bitcoin isn't part of this equation anymore, the network effects supporting bitcoin's incumbency were extremely overstated.

But if that infrastructure isn't yet available in your area, buy Monero on an altcoin exhcange after buying bitcoin. Or even shapeshift Bitcoin for Monero, just to top up your balance.

This is the separation of cash and state, so don't worry about what they think, this is a parallel infrastructure that doesn't leverage their financial institutions.

elastic_church··on Russian FOSS activist arrested in Russia for his Tor exit-node
and speaking of anonymous LLC's, I know a registered agent that takes cryptocurrency for several years

so now you can email him anonymously over TOR, and pay his bitcoin invoices Shapeshifting some Monero

I also checked the Panama Papers and none of those entities they filed for me appeared in the leak, but even in the off chance they did, you wouldn't be associated.

GreenCloudVPS also takes cryptocurrency.

and finally, there is at least one jurisdiction in the world that still offers legit bearer share companies which require no registration. And your entity no longer needs a banking relationship to acquire goods and services.

Interesting choice of things to trim, I'd like no more public resources being used on the FCPA, insider trading, and "material misrepresentations", as these all seem to have disproportionate costs than effect. Who should I tweet?
elastic_church··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
I've worked on social networks for several venture backed companies, and I opted out of their use half a decade ago. Drug dealers aren't users.

I like the opium analogy. Socially acceptable as long as the East India Company is forcing it down our throats. (But at least we'll get Hong Kong out of it!)

of course why do you ask!

elastic_church··on Airlines Make More Money Selling Miles Than Seats
its just arbitrage.

airlines sell a mile at an average of 1 cent, banks charge merchants 3.5 cents for every dollar.

consumers can win if they pay their credit card off on time. many of them are able to churn by putting business travel from their employer on their credit card and getting it reimbursed in time.

banks can win double and triple if consumers don't pay their credit card balance completely one time, just once.

since the credit card aspect was already there whether there were good loyalty programs in existence or not, its actually a decent ecosystem!

Yes, I'm aware, or, I speculate that ShadowBrokers are utilizing this to unduly burden Eastern Europeans, Russians and Chinese hackers

but really, asymmetric information is asymmetric. We just don't know.

elastic_church··on I Spent Two Years Botting on Instagram – What I Learned
I honestly thought some social media marketers would come out the woodwork and agree - equally vaguely - but I guess they aren't here

Its more beneficial not to be more specific, and seeing that nobody else has anything to add and are more-so frustrated at the asymmetric information then its a form of validation.

But I've taken accounts from 0 followers to 10k+ followers within a week's time. All the follower's accounts are non-bots, any random selection would be highly engaged real humans, and new posts maintain around 2%-5% of the followers liking or viewing+liking without the use of hash tags at all. There are interesting skews in the demographics, worth its own article, but I'm fine without it.

For follower count alone, instagress would take months to do the equivalent, as its activity is slow and varied to avoid detection as a bot. Also the unfollow rate begins to match the speed at which it can safely attract followers, in the low thousands, if you don't have an exceptionally active niche.

elastic_church··on I Spent Two Years Botting on Instagram – What I Learned
its a "reject this subtle advertisement for Instagress as you saw how effective it is despite the criticisms"

when there are obviously other competitors that don't take a bot approach, shouldn't be that hard to accept

elastic_church··on I Spent Two Years Botting on Instagram – What I Learned
The instagram economy is booming and this is primarily a public service announcement about the incompleteness of the author's expose'

The only nugget I can reveal is that many users have bought into a social contract of rags to riches, "organic growth" from nothing, and just like real society, this is the least effective and time wasting set of rules to play by.

elastic_church··on I Spent Two Years Botting on Instagram – What I Learned
Despite the "expose'" that author is behind the times.

There are even more effective ways to grow accounts faster, with real followers.

Instagress can be complementary, if you want it to be.

The author's conclusions are also wrong or incomplete, such as why Facebook/Instagram allow it despite being against their TOS. They're wrong about how to effectively spot instagress botters, as Instagress is a HIGHLY customizable bot and the obviousness is up to the user

elastic_church··on Uber said to use “sophisticated” software to defraud drivers, passengers
All it takes is a tiny tiny line in the terms of use that states that the fare differences can be different between client side apps.

The user isn't paying the driver, they are paying uber. The driver is paid by uber under a separate agreement.

So it honestly doesn't matter.

elastic_church··on Uber finds one allegedly stolen Waymo file on an employee’s personal device
Oh I see why my comment perturbed the collective conscious, but I wasn't making any statement on the merit of the accusation, just his continual employment and how impressive that is.

I was saying that most people get fired for any accusation whether they have merit or not.

This employee has an accusation that has substantial merit and is still employed. So thats actually broadcasting confidence amongst current and future employees regardless of what kind of thing gets slung their way.

elastic_church··on More than 8,000 ride-share drivers flunked Mass. background checks
Look, until the next Marilyn Manson is driving in ride sharing programs and randomly killing people that were otherwise contributing to society, I'm not going to care and will be perfectly content not caring about the illegitimate dragnet of sex offender status.

I care WAYYYY more about the driver masquerading as a local but doesn't know the roads for my daily commute.

They're going to be replaced by machines waay before a more comprehensive and relevant background check framework is established anyway, so stop trying to marginalize people trying to make a buck.
