elandybarr··on Ask HN: Serious mathematics books that can replace a good teacher?
> Mathematics is best learned under the guidance of a mentor.

I disagree. The most important thing is curiosity.

For math, you need to think, question, and play with the concepts. It is much more active than just reading. Develop an intuition by seeing what happens when you maximize or minimize a parameter. Think about the consequences if something were different. Try to derive relations for fun.

This also applies to music and code.

If you figure out how things work on your own, you will retain it far better than going through the motions mechanically.

elandybarr··on Endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure in US: disease burden and cost analysis
It is certainly the case in the Central Valley in California. I got great wine grapes for $1/pound as well and wonderful organic persimmons for that same price. However, that area has a bunch of actual farmers.
elandybarr··on Silicon Valley Struggles to Add Conservatives to Its Ranks
I have a network of conservative tech friends in Seattle and coordinate with various pro-Trump tech individuals around the country.

I think from the comments on here (many done under unattributable usernames) it is clear to see why most stay far under the radar. There is a very real fear of negative career consequences in the tech industry for having views that are mainstream in broad swathes of the country that so enables the tech industry's success.

While some blowback may be manageable for someone with demonstrable skills and few longterm commitments, it has a chilling effect for those with families and mortgages.

And for those who think that none of their peers voted for the US president, I can tell you that you are likely mistaken. For those that think that conservatives can't innovate or fit into the tech industry, I counter that there are very successful people all over the industry, but given that there is little upside and high risk to mentioning it publicly, it is understandable that one would have a different perception.

elandybarr··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
Mass reporting is a common censorship tactic on Facebook. There are Facebook groups of Muslim activists who mass report critics of the religion to trigger autobans.
elandybarr··on Amazon and Ebay Opened Pandora's Box of Chinese Counterfeits
One of my laptops is running with a counterfeit charger (Amazon) and a counterfeit battery (eBay). As soon as I realized that I have never left it plugged in where I don't see it - who knows what kind of fire hazard it could be.

Also, lasers. There are plenty of illegal laser pointers on eBay and output rarely matches the claims. And you really don't want to play with these illegal lasers unless you have real wraparound lenses.

elandybarr··on Social Media Guidelines for the Times Newsroom
For those who do not have the context, senior figures at The Times were caught on camera talking about ties to people associated with the Democrat Party and talking about working closely with an individual at YouTube to favorably curate their front page. This individual also discussed a close personal relationship with former FBI Director James Comey.

If you want to watch the videos for yourself, look up "Project Veritas", and you can see the footage that likely prompted this post.

elandybarr··on One Thing Silicon Valley Can’t Seem to Fix
> There is much to emulate at Apple — but not that almost 1:1 ratio of office to parking.

I don't know what the other options are. It is a humongous waste of productivity for employees to worry about whether or not they will have a spot that day. I know people at offices like that and they are certainly not happy.

elandybarr··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
Have you ever looked into his claims or reasons why he believes that?
elandybarr··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
I have spoken to him at length myself.

If you don't think Infowars is a serious news outlet, maybe you haven't watched them? In about 20 years they have had I think 3 retractions, which a propaganda rag like CNN or the Washington Post has to do weekly.

I would wish that HN would have more people who care about primary sources - that is what my academic training taught me. Perhaps if you listened to any of Bannon's speeches rather than malicious rumor and hearsay, you would have a different opinion.

elandybarr··on McRevolt: The Frustrating Life of the McDonald's Franchisee (2015)
Have you had any of the never-frozen Wendy's? Vastly improved over the last few years.
elandybarr··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
Shiva is a great guy. I strongly encourage readers to watch or listen to him actually speak, rather than get that third-hand.

I'm glad that he won against Gawker and am cheering for him to defeat Elizabeth Warren for Senate. He is the kind of smart, wise, and experienced technocrat that we could use in government, with an actual numerical sense and experience staffing teams and making payroll.

elandybarr··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
PLEASE PLEASE have a non-FB option.

I got added by someone else to a Facebook group that eventually went on a troll raid. I rarely go on Facebook and didn't even participate in any troll raids. Just from being in the group, my account was disabled. I have been locked out of my apps for three weeks and Facebook hasn't answered any appeal I sent them.

elandybarr··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
> Or are you suggesting that pro-Trump people are some kind of a silent majority?

Maybe not here on this forum, but throughout the country, then absolutely yes.

elandybarr··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
Why? I'm here and in other places with views counter to mine. There are a lot of tech for Trump folks that just keep their heads down at their jobs because they don't want the drama.
elandybarr··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
Massive welfare to the majority of the world for no US benefit is a great reason to pull out.
elandybarr··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
There are reasons to object to the accord that have nothing to do with a so-called "anti-science policy".

The actual wording of the accords has little to do with science and more to do with massive welfare obligations and handicapping the US economy with no requirements from China for decades.

elandybarr··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
Yep. I am in some tech and business world Slack groups where people were similarly ecstatic about the news. Getting out of your own filter bubbles from time-to-time is healthy.
elandybarr··on The great British Brexit robbery
No. There are many people with Jewish background who oppose his agenda. And he does not hide being rich or pushing unwanted agendas in the countries where his NGOs operate.
elandybarr··on Brexit's Tech Brain Drain
If the roles they are leaving are truly "in demand", the market will make up for it.

For perspective, that feeling of, "Wow! This place is different now" is what some of these same people were imposing on the locals.

This article seems like it was solely written to make Leave voters feel guilty and further shame them in the eyes of those who voted Stay. What else could be the point?

elandybarr··on Donald Trump Secures Electoral College Win, With Few Surprises
Robert Satiacum had long pledged not to vote for Hillary (even before the election).

Chiafalo had said tentatively that he would consider doing the same thing, but then the election happened, and he had a public tantrum and suddenly decided he would get electors to switch to Clinton. Then his plot failed and he tried something else.

Since our next President had already clinched the votes, the other electors decided to make a statement.

elandybarr··on Classism in America
You don't deserve the downvotes.

I grew up in Seattle and still live there. If you voice any opinions that are not in a narrow band of the far left wing, they (including recent transplants) will attribute you holding that opinion to your place of origin, rather than listening to any justification you have for holding that opinion.

elandybarr··on Facebook vigilantes catching thieves and punishing them
> People in Peru don't have faith in the police.

Another Peruvian here. What some people in this thread miss is that the police may actually be complicit in the crimes. This happens in cases like short-term kidnapping. I know someone who this happened to, and since her father worked in the police department, she actually recognized one of the accomplices from being one of her father's peers.

Cell phones have been so incredibly powerful in making things safer for everyone. From using services like Glympse to show a family member where you are when you jump in a taxi to taking pictures/video to ensure accountability.

elandybarr··on Why I Sold My Company and Didn't Tell Anyone for a Year
I don't think the people who found successful startups are the type who agonize over all the possible minutiae that could be percieved as offensive to someone, somewhere.
elandybarr··on Ford Ditches Microsoft for QNX in Latest In-Vehicle Tech Platform
I got a Ford CMAX (which I really love!), and the dealer tried to eagerly sell me the SYNC system.

I found a car that had all I wanted, but SYNC was there so I told him I would walk away and find one that didn't have the SYNC, and was ready to do it too. In the day they lent me it to test drive, it had all sorts of WTF and features not working.

So eventually they gave me the car without charging the $1200+ for it.

I live in the Redmond area. As I was leaving he mentioned that most Microsoft employees declined that system too.

elandybarr··on Secure Basecamp alternative: Collabtive 2.0
So the submission title implies that Basecamp is not secure. As a user of Basecamp, I was concerned, so I started Googling. However, I was unable to find articles that were from the last two years about any security issues (other than the DDOS extortion attempt).

Since I am already involved with a project that uses Basecamp, are there any specific reasons you can give for why I should switch?

I love Open Source and willing to try this in a future project. Thanks devs for working on this!

elandybarr··on Show HN: Kish Map
Cool! What kind of mapping engine did you use? Google Map Engine? CartoDB?

The bounded view works nicely.

Mikhaem yeh rooz beh anja safar konam.

elandybarr··on Anti-Patterns in Python Programming
Yeah. This was a special case for a one line CSV that was requested by my client. It was a dictionary with a bunch of single measurements.
elandybarr··on Anti-Patterns in Python Programming
Oops. Good catch!
elandybarr··on Anti-Patterns in Python Programming
Failing to use join is a big one.

I have seen countless instances of people writing the logic to output commas in between items (like for CSV export) that they want to concatenate into a string.

header_line = ','.join( header for header in headers )
    csv_line    = ','.join( str(dataset[key]) for key in dataset.keys() )
Example for a case of a dictionary mapping a string to a bunch of numbers.
elandybarr··on The Death of the Urdu Script
The article is great, but I don't think it adequately captures one of the difficulties with this problem, and that is the very high minimum number of characters that must be designed for an Urdu font. I think it is an order of magnitude higher than many would guess it at first.
