ekurutepe··on Does anyone use MCP servers in their dev workflow?
We're prototyping an MCP for RevenueCat. The goal is to provide an onramp for developers to setup their integration, add new product etc. w/o having to leave their dev environment. Still ways to go but initial results are very cool.

ekurutepe··on How to spot a $5M/year scam on the App Store, in 5 minutes flat
I'm sure Apple wants to do the right thing but they've set themselves up badly from the top down in this case: Tim Cook has been promising (and delivering) services revenue and subscriber count growth since 2016. If your employer says services revenue growth is the most important thing, people do respond to incentives even if they're aware of it or not.

I'm also sure they're aware of this and hopefully we'll see improvements soon. (no insider knowledge, just good old hopeful thinking)

ekurutepe··on Quadratic Voting (2014)
Theoretically, this could be fixed by making the cost of votes expressed as a percentage of your income and/or wealth.

Some european countries like Switzerland are applying this principle to traffic tickets. It's not uncommon for rich people in fast cars paying few hundred thousand dollars for a speeding ticket.

ekurutepe··on Real-Time Lightning Map
they use antennas with a special amplifiers to detect electrical field changes caused by lightning strikes. Since they know where these antennas are they're able to triangulate the lightning strikes using the time delta between stations.

If you setup a lot of microphones to pickup gunshot sounds, you should be able to triangulate them as well. I would guess that you would need many more stations though, since acoustic signals don't propagate as well electrical signals.

ekurutepe··on What the Heck is Happening to Windows?
Interesting and apt use of Steve Jobs's truck vs. car analogy at the end:

"Maybe Windows needs to be more like GMC, the part of GM that only makes trucks (and truck-based SUVs). After all, while many people choose to use a truck for basic transportation, they're really designed and optimized for work. You know, as should be Windows."

ekurutepe··on Instagrams from North Korea
Spot on. One should also keep in mind that when photography was something new and rare people also took it very seriously and didn't smile in the 'western' world. If you only get relatively few number of pictures taken over the course of your life you want to leave a respectable impression for the future generations. I'm not sure about how wide-spread and available photography is in NK but that might also have to do with this.
ekurutepe··on Author interactive math equations and diagrams online using LATEX and PSTricks
EPUB format is HTML based. I don't think if would be very hard to get this working on e-readers as long as there is an input method and you don't mind the slow refresh rate of e-ink.

ekurutepe··on Why Berlin should not look up to the Valley
As the author states the tech sector does not directly employ Berlin's currently unemployed and has to import talent from outside (disclaimer: I'm such an imported talent into Berlin), it still creates demand for services and increases employment in other sectors as it grows, and gives an option for the city's youth to consider the tech sector for their future.

However as the author states, the sustainability of the tech sector is very critical, but this not specific for Berlin. Even in the silicon valley there is a trend towards more sustainable growth models as the hundreds of SaaS startups here on HN would testify.

Being a really open and relaxed city with a high quality of life, Berlin stands a good chance of attracting talent, allowing them to try out their ideas and hopefully create an IPO or two in the next ten years. I can't see why the author categorically dismisses that option.

ekurutepe··on App Store Pricing: Worth Less than a Cup of Coffee
Isn't that exactly the same conclusion as the article?

"But we should be aware of the fact that we're in the business of creating products which offer very little value to people. It's our choice if that's what we want to pursue."

ekurutepe··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
No. EU citizens can work everywhere in the EU, especially as a software dev.
ekurutepe··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
I'm in Berlin startup scene and I can tell you that is quite easy to get a working permit as a software dev, basically only thing you need besides your passport is an employment contract with more than 33k€ per year. (search term: blue card)

Don't go the asylum way if you have the software skills. Blue card is much easier and a safe bet.

The processing can take up to 6-8 weeks though…

And as for language, at least in Berlin tech companies, english is the language of business…

ekurutepe··on US behavioural research studies skew positive
In my experience as a european ex-PhD researcher, this is not only US and not only behavioural studies.

Authors are under pressure to publish as much as they can, and positive results are not only easier to publish on journals but also provide good deliverables for research grant review committees and help show that funding was well spent. Not to mention a good reference for the next research proposal, showing that money will be well invested.

ekurutepe··on What is happening in İstanbul?
sorry @DocG but I don't think revolutions happen that often to be able to say how safe they are with any kind of statistical significance :)

But as far as I can tell, the government seems to be starting to accept the blame and even Erdogan will probably fall in line in a few days. It probably won't escalate anymore. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

ekurutepe··on What is happening in İstanbul?
This is not my blog. I came across it and seemed very accurate and unbiased. Thought I'd share here.
ekurutepe··on Ex-YouTube Man Builds Graphics Card for Entire Internet
Isn't it a bit wasteful to resize all those images on the fly? I'd think it's much better to resize them at creation and serve different files as they're needed, assumption being here that dumbly serving a file is more power efficient/cheaper than rescaling a large image every time a smaller version is needed.

ekurutepe··on PC sales plunge, Microsoft and Windows 8 blamed
Of course this has nothing to do with post-pc devices. It's obviously Microsoft's fault that Apple's Mac sales declined as well, for the first time in ages.
