ektimo··on Politics is bad because we use an 18th century voting system
Santa Clara (in Silicon Valley) has a measure proposing Ranked Choice Voting.

ektimo··on Politics is bad because we use an 18th century voting system
The first step of a vote should be to randomly select 11 people who will be given responsibility for selecting the best choice and given time and resources to take it seriously. By "seriously" I mean like for a US presidential election a paid year of studying.

It terms of feasibility it should be popular because everyone wins either an hour of their life back or wins a chance to really make a difference.

(Starting out a vote by randomly selecting a smaller set of participants is called "sortition")

ektimo··on Music theory for nerds
Thanks! This sounds like good terminology and your writing attempts to answer the question in ways I haven't seen elsewhere.

Also I think the fact that songs can get stuck in your head suggests some kind of mental reinforcement exercise for patterns over time.

ektimo··on Music theory for nerds
I've skimmed a lot of articles on music "theory" but none of them provide anything like what I'm looking for. A music theory should explain:

1. Why do we like pieces when played forward but not backward or inverted?

2. Why do certain sounds evoke certain emotions?

3. How could you write a program to pick out music that people find especially good (versus music that has surface similarities)?

In other words, why does a particular sequence of sounds A, B, C lead to a mental state M that has particular internal qualities?

"Incredibly, no one was injured in the mishap."

It's not incredible. Most space isn't filled with people.

ektimo··on Beyond bubble: Google loses its mind
This sounds a lot more like Path loses its mind.
ektimo··on LinkedIn to File for IPO Today
The title is misleading. The article says "as soon as today".
ektimo··on Is the "About" button more important than we think?
Yes, though we may not be typical. But I'm surprised how many blogs I run into that don't have any About. An About on HN would be nice too.
ektimo··on Ask HN: Landing page Vs. jumping right in?
Generally I like it jumping straight in, but "it depends". (If anyone says "test it", generally I'd prefer you to be spending that time making the game better.")
ektimo··on Developing on WP7 vs Android vs iPhone
I meant it doesn't complain when sending a message to a nil object though this is probably not what you intended and makes tracking down bugs harder... or maybe I just have C++ mindset.

in this clip he learns that folks working at the stores feel they aren't really part of 7-eleven as a whole company and can't advance anywhere

LOWELL, MA–Jeremy Novato, a recent graduate of a well-respected Lowell high school, has secured a position with the McDonald's Corporation, a high-ranking Fortune 500 company. "I'm tremendously excited to have this opportunity to work with the world's number-one restaurant chain," said Novato, 18, pouring ketchup into a large metallic pump dispenser at the $41 billion company's Exeter Road branch Monday."

ektimo··on Ask HN: Where do you host your startup web services?
I have the same question, but what if the uptime requirement is only something like 97%? Backups is a requirement though.
ektimo··on Facebook is Building a New Payment Operations Team
Isn't a 30% transaction fee too high for this? Unlike iPhone/Android, you still get the distribution channel regardless of whether you use Facebook's credit system.

ektimo··on Tell HN: The Free Version of My GPS iPhone App Came Out Today (Gaia GPS Lite)
I'm the other poster, and I believe you weren't Technically Lying (http://lesswrong.com/lw/11y/not_technically_lying/) but why did you bring up that you hadn't used the driving directions? Maybe this had nothing to do with deceiving people into thinking you weren't associated with the product but I find it doubtful. A more honest self-review (if this really is accepted practice on iPhone) would just say why you think your product is good. It seems you're skating a little over the edge at best.
ektimo··on Tell HN: The Free Version of My GPS iPhone App Came Out Today (Gaia GPS Lite)
Wow, I thought you'd be mortified! Instead you don't consider it "unethical in the slightest" because you thought it was the only way you could win.

How much money do you think you made from your review which was written to make it seem like you weren't affiliated with the product? However much that is is what you sold out for.

My opinion: Friends and family is above the line. Reviewing yourself or paying people is below the line.

ektimo··on Motorola Droid hands on
"while others can appreciate the level of engineering and the minds that went into the precision you can feel when you are driving it."

I'd like to see a blind test for that. And who cares anyway if an expert can detect a certain "feel", other than for status?

ektimo··on Seth's Blog: The problem with positive thinking
Still the people who never do that are, in honesty, feeling bad not good.

I hypothesize the reason humans perform worse after failing a hard question versus passing an easy question is that by keeping yourself down, you avoid getting into trouble claiming a higher status in the tribe than you can pull off if it comes to a confrontation. But you feel bad so that you keep looking for an opportunity to claim the higher status/more resources position. Perhaps explaining this (if it is true) and that this doesn't confer any benefit in our current environment would be just as effective.

ektimo··on Seth's Blog: The problem with positive thinking
Negative thinking feels bad. Maybe he's never actually experienced it. A better explanation is needed.
ektimo··on A 5 Minute Intelligence Test for Kids
Or you could try using 2 other cards to draw a horizontal line across the 2 lines for comparison. One card is used to form the right angle and the other is used to slide up to see which line end it reaches first.

Or if you could get a good shadow you may be able to do it with just one other card with the 2 comparison cards aligned and the shadow card tilting down.

Edit: Or just use table corner. 2 cards along edge and line drawing card on other edge.

ektimo··on Apple and Facebook application development: A rush for fool's gold?
"Winning" iPhone/Facebook: 1 in 100. $10M per year.

Winning Mega Millions Jackpot: 1 in 175,711,536. $12M paid over 26 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Millions)

ektimo··on Apple and Facebook application development: A rush for fool's gold?
"The 1-2% that succeed can expect an upside of around $10-20 million in annual revenues. This isn’t quite a lottery, but it’s depressingly close."

A lottery ticket costs $1 and isn't worth it. A 1% chance to "win" $10 million would arguably be worth $100,000. I wouldn't say it's close. (And that's not even counting that this is annual revenue.)

really? i thought it kinda sucked.

ektimo··on We Nod While Talking on the Phone. Design For It.
Sounds like a complex, error-prone solution that requires the devices and people to learn something new and doesn't solve the problem of not being able to see the person you're talking to.

"A nod-aware phone would make my daily communications that much more humane, and technology that much more human."

Even if you ignore the insurmountable downsides, it doesn't sound all that human to me.
