eksu··on Coreutils for Windows
Agents / models don't need to "learn" about this.

When on Windows, the models default to bash / coreutils conventions until they realize it doesn't work / not available unless explicitly instructed otherwise.

Even on Mac, they tend to default to bash instead of running things in zsh.

eksu··on Griffin PowerMate driver for modern macOS
Surface Dial is a good hardware target.
eksu··on Schedule tasks on the web
This is the wrong way to see it. If a technology gets cheaper, people will use more and more and more of it. If inference costs drop, you can throw way more reasoning tokens and a combination of many many agents to increase accuracy or creativity and such.
eksu··on Jim Lovell, Apollo 13 commander, has died
Do the moon viewers skew slightly older as a group because the earlier missions did not include space walking, and the walkers skew slightly younger?

Could also be impacted by fame / levels of personal income from being in one of the two distinct groups.

eksu··on Studio Ghibli marks 40 years, but future looks uncertain
Jungle Book - Walt Disney was involved with this, they started animating in 1965.

Rest of the films you mentioned - The Disney Renaissance the parent parent’s comment mentioned - starting with The Little Mermaid in 1989, and it seems generally accepted this lasted for 10 years?

eksu··on OpenAI for Countries
Not latencies, think data privacy / keeping queries and data from leaving sovereign borders. This way, if there is some local instance / everything is local than the datacenter and service are subject to local laws and regulations (and alternatively you're not subject to foriegn the laws and regulations (and agencies).
eksu··on Native visionOS platform support
macOS used to have OpenVR support (SteamVR) around 2017 for the HTC Vive, yes, but never any OpenXR runtime as no later hmds had macOS support.
eksu··on Native visionOS platform support
OpenGL is quite dated for VR/AR. In the Apple ecosystem they supported OpenGL 4.1 for quite some time before moving to Metal, which was announced 2 years before Vulkan.

If you spent the time developing an in house graphics API since open standards weren’t moving forward, why would you rewrite everything a second time just a few years later? Shouldn’t you expect to get a decade or two out of your existing API and only do the massive rewrite when the benefits become more substantial?

Vulkan & OpenGL applications can translate to Metal with MoltenGL and MoltenVK, respectively.

eksu··on About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States
They have not done this currently. The apps are still unavailable. (6AM EST 1/20/25)
eksu··on FrontierMath was funded by OpenAI
This risk could be mitigated by publishing the test.
eksu··on EU asks for views on plan to force Apple to open up iOS
I don’t think it’s quite there yet, but the iOS Assistive Access mode is a step in the right direction. Eventually phones will have to have an “old people” mode, right? I especially worry how my grandparents will comply with 2FA requirements, passkeys, etc.
eksu··on Microsoft Recall is now an explorer.exe dependency
No need for OCR as it has access to the compositor as they explained at the Build conference.
eksu··on Can't change security policy or disable SIP with macOS 15 Sequoia
I did a .ipsw restore of my M1 Mac mini to 15 Sequoia RC last week and have since gone in and lowered the Security Policy to install ZFS kexts. I wonder if your issue is a bug relating to your multi MacOS boot setup? Have you posted this on MacRumors or elsewhere?
eksu··on Zed AI
excited to use zed, but the AI chat panel does not work on a Mac host connected to a Linux guest.
eksu··on Janky Apple ID Security
This is not true.
eksu··on Janky Apple ID Security
I had this issue with my third party email provider as username for account, others are reporting iCloud.
eksu··on Home Screen Advantage
I don’t use any PWA’s and I am not so sympathetic from claims of harm from removing/deprecating PWA’s without some data on the size and impact of this change.

Xbox Gamepass presumably would be the largest one/best example, is that how they ask people on iOS to stream games?

eksu··on Early Apple Vision Pro adopters alarmed to learn VR porn doesn't work
I am very curious about MV-HEVC. Why is the quality better, isn’t it just a container?

How does compression work vs say a side by side as a single stream in HEVC? Does either format allow them to compress based off of redundant information from the views being so similar?

eksu··on 12VO power standard appears to be gaining steam, will reduce PC cabling, costs
this is a computer not a car, 48v seems overkill and dangerous.

components use 12v, 5v, or 3.3v in pcs currently. why do the step down from 48->12 instead of running 12v naturally? 12v is also what is used by the most power hungry components of a PC (GPU).

eksu··on QEMU-iOS, an emulator for legacy Apple devices
You are probably not allowed to contribute to the open source private servers for Minecraft Earth and .ipa mods for people who still want to play?

https://github.com/Project-Earth-Team

ASA (which I worked on for Minecraft Earth) is also end of life in the next year, not sure how that will impact this.

eksu··on Apple begins blocking M1 Mac users from side loading iOS applications
This is a bummer, the whole reason I bought my M1 Mac Mini was so I could side load apps like Discord and use native versions instead of running electron.

I think I’m past my return window but might see if I can return mine or not.

eksu··on The Ultimate MacBook+PC Monitor Showdown
I had a Radeon VII I used on my MacPro5,1 that I would dual boot to Windows, which worked great with the LG Ultrafine 4K display (21.5", 4096x2304).

I upgraded to a LG 5K (same DPI, 27", 5120x2880) with the gc-titan-ridge thunderbolt card, but that was sort of a pain on an unsupported machine so I am moving to a M1 Mac mini + Thunderbolt PC. Hoping to drive it with a 3080, but I think it should be fine.

For any fast paced competitive games, you should be able to drive 60fps with the right hardware, but at the same time you will be held back by the lack of a greater than 60hz refresh rate.

eksu··on Electron 11.0 released with support for Apple Silicon
I hope applications like Teams, Discord, and others that have iOS / iPadOS apps allow users to use those rather than electron versions.
eksu··on Mainline Linux on the MikroTik RB3011
I’ve been using RouterOS on a rb2011 since 2014, and it’s been a great device. Only wish I could have something like Pi Hole running on it, rather than a separate device.

Not sure if I would ever try to install something else and loose hardware acceleration.

eksu··on Sampler for Mac Touchbars

eksu··on The draft Bill for upcoming $2.x trillion stimulus package [pdf]
I don’t believe this is the draft bill for the stimulus. This is a bill in the House of Representatives, whereas a different bill is in the Senate and my understanding was that the Senate Bill is the basis of ongoing negotiation.
eksu··on Baked MacBook Air: A cautionary recipe
I did this 3 times with a HP laptop from 2010-2011 and had the same experience, the graphics chip would last 3-4 more months.

My understanding was that the oven repair was/is mostly for when GPU’s had to move away from less based solder due to EU regulations but hadn’t gotten non-lead based solder right yet.

Also I wrapped most of the board in foil only exposing the GPU, and I put the board in hot and then killed heat after one or two minutes.

I thought it was great as a kid without any means to a new computer. Friends would give me their broken computers and I would fix them for myself.

The right repair I guess depends on what you can afford and what you’re willing to risk.

eksu··on Apple Special Event Livestream [video]
Apple allows you to completely block things with a whitelist model instead of a blacklist model.

Settings -> News -> Restrict Stories in Today
These changes apply to the feed that shows up on the Siri watch face as well, and are a good way to force small local outlets onto my watch.

Enjoy.

eksu··on Valve Breaks the Shackles of Proton
Looking forward to the eventual release of Proton for MacOS through DXVK, MoltenVK, etc.
eksu··on Running FreeBSD on OS X using xhyve, a port of bhyve
QEMU now has ‘hvf’ (hypervisor.framework) available in master as an accelerator, I think it was a summer of code project.

Wish I could use it, but the current implementation calls the xgetbv instruction which is not available on my Westemere EP processors.

All MacOS/QEMU needs is PCIE passthrough and you could have an amazing setup with thunderbolt accessories.
