Apple overpromised and underdelivered. Loading and running iPad apps was one of the big sales pitches for going ARM. Reality: nothing of value you'd actually want to use is available in the Mac Appstore. So you HAVE to sideload apps from your iPad. 90% of iPad Apps I use on my Mac are sideloaded. They won't get any updates anymore thanks to this.

I think I’m past my return window but might see if I can return mine or not.
In some cases they are right in that we should demand openness of closed devices such as e.g. iPhones.
But in this case the app developers are to blame as they opted out.
Mac (especially M1 Macs) are a tiny tiny percentage of iPhone/iPad users. There's got to be UI bugs here and there. No ROI calculation can make "oh let's put support efforts into Mac for the five users we might get there" positive.
