ejpastorino··on Ask HN: Mailing lists that HN readers ought to know about?
Software Lead Weekly is consistently full of useful and interesting articles: http://softwareleadweekly.com/
ejpastorino··on The days are long but the decades are short
Can't agree more.
ejpastorino··on Ask HN: Which computer/laptop do you use?
13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display (late 2012). 256GB SSD. 2.5GHz i5. 8GB RAM.

I was about to buy a Macbook Air with similar hardware, but the Retina Display got me and made me spend a few bucks more. Totally worth it!

ejpastorino··on Ask HN: I'm an engineer, how do I learn design?
David Kadavy is offering a free course in a few days: http://summerofdesign.com/

Looks really promising!

ejpastorino··on Github Issues Review Chrome Extension – collaborative peer reviews
Like the idea!
ejpastorino··on Get Your App Ready for Rails 4
Hi, Thanks all for the comments!

I didn't include queues, live streaming, and other features because unfortunately they are not available as a separate gems.

I tried to cover all the things that are possible now (via gems or simple code change). Maybe in a future post I'll cover all the new things in Rails 4. But as it's still on development I prefer to wait until a beta or release candidate.

ejpastorino··on Gitlab
Kind of old. The UI looks completely different now.
ejpastorino··on Show HN: The Cross Browser Handbook
Seems very promising!

A few samples or demo code would be great though. Just to check how basic/intermeditate/advance code and concepts are.

ejpastorino··on New Heroku Add-Ons Marketplace
It was about time! The new dashboard is great and much more comfortable, but looking for plugins was still a pain. Still, Heroku is an option for small/medium deploys IMHO.
ejpastorino··on Competing on easy
It's funny that most of the comments are about the new blog design and how people is not liking it.
ejpastorino··on Show HN: a new tool for front end dev
Would be cool if it gives some more info on the landing page.
ejpastorino··on Mona Lisa in pure CSS
amazing!!!
ejpastorino··on Hackerface: Rapportive for HN
I cancelled the installation when it askedd for permission to acces "your data on ALL websites". It would be great to limit it to news.ycombinator.com and just the sites it really needs to access. Why is it done this way?
ejpastorino··on How Apple Should've Made the Dock Connector Adapter (IMO)
This idea seems OK for iPhone 5, but it would require an special adapter for every other ipod or gadget with that conector. The actual Apple adapter is universal in that sense.
ejpastorino··on Mining of Massive Datasets
Looks good!

Is it available on mobi or epub somewhere?

ejpastorino··on Ask HN: What are some good learning resources for UI/UX Design?
There was a really similar topic a few weeks ago with really great insights.

Ask HN: Recommendations for learning and improving UX/UI skills?: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4316967

And also worth looking: Ask HN: How do you learn to design?: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4290031

ejpastorino··on Show HN: All the design principles in one place
In that case, it would be really good to explain that on the site :)

But definitely, making singup option would be much much better. At least, some intro content available that will get visitors attention.

ejpastorino··on Show HN: All the design principles in one place
Why is signup mandatory? I would really like to see at least some content before signing up!
ejpastorino··on Ask HN: Recommendations for learning and improving UX/UI skills?
Try to understand design, and analyze sites and designs you like.

I highly recommend reading David Kadavy's "Design For Hackers": http://designforhackers.com/

ejpastorino··on Ask HN: How do you learn to design?
Designing takes some time to understand if you don't have "innate good taste".

I really really recommend the book Design for Hackers by David Kadavy: http://designforhackers.com/ It gives you a really good idea of most parts of design and its history. Once you've read that you should then look for things you like how they are designed and try to understand the decisions made by the author.

IMHO, learning by copying works good on design.

ejpastorino··on Ask HN: Examples of truly great dashboards?
Getting a good dashboard is really a hard task. It varies from business to business. The important thing is to identify some metrics and KPIs you want to be aware of.

Initially, it would show very few metrics or charts that can give you a quick snapshot of the business so you can see how it's performing very quickly. But it should be possible to dig into more data and visualize it in many different ways to get better insights.

On most apps I've worked, we've always opted to build out own dashboard because there was no out-of-the-box solution. We would gather data from inside the app and also use some external services like mixpanel or google analytics. Also, lately I've been moving towards more custom charts and graphs made with d3.js which is extremely powerful.

Nowadays there are a couple of products that let you craft your own dashboard like https://www.leftronic.com/ and http://www.geckoboard.com/

You can get some ideas there and by looking similar products. MixPanel and KissMetrics also provide some inspiration. And doing a search on dribbble can give you some ideas also: http://dribbble.com/search?q=dashboard

A really good book on data visualization is "Designing with Data" by Brian Suda: http://www.designingwithdata.com/

ejpastorino··on JQuery Kills Innovation
Completely disagree.

jQuery is a tool to make things simpler. Innovation comes from creating new tools that can make everyday work as simple as possible.

jQuery in itself is innovation. And to the developer ecosystem provides a lot of innovation. Making other librares do greater stuff and moving standards forward.

Making tools is one of the best ways to innovate.

ejpastorino··on Latency: The New Web Performance Bottleneck
Great article!! Really interesting facts on bandwidth vs latency.
ejpastorino··on D3.js + Backbone.js Intro / Crash Course
Excellent video!

D3 is an amazing tool. I don't wanna go back to google visualization or Highcharts after using it!

ejpastorino··on Common patterns of markup & style
I don't think so either, but editing the form on Firebug or WebKit's inspector is really easy. And the text area is looking nice, really similar to text fields :)
ejpastorino··on Common patterns of markup & style
It's look like it's just a base for creating nice wordpress themes. It's not intended to learn much I think.

Anyway, it has really great style. Very good looking components and very useful to get started easily with a cool site, not necessarily a wordpress one.

ejpastorino··on A Weekend with Z Shell
I keep going back and forth between zsh and bash, I don't fully get used to zsh, but it's really great. This railscast is also useful for starting with oh-my-zsh: http://railscasts.com/episodes/308-oh-my-zsh
