eivindga··on Cloudflare K2: serverless event streams
Congratulations on the launch! Looks very interesting indeed!

As someone who enjoys writing Kafka streams applications I am also looking forward to the day you support the Kafka APIs.

Having a cost efficient fully serverless Kafka compatible service would be great, and something I think many businesses would find useful.

Great work!

eivindga··on 99Wh Battery Linux Laptop
The only review I have found is this:

https://youtu.be/l-LTjXdMe2w

Ordered today actually. I've been torn between getting a 14" vs 16", since I am also replacing an old xps 15. But the extended battery life of the 14" is what finally convinced me.

The Starlab Starfighter also looks great, but I need a replacement laptop this year preferably.

Sounds like you need something like:

or

(I have no idea if they work as advertised, as I have never used these services.)

eivindga··on Haiti vs. the Dominican Republic
For one, it might be harder to attract investments from Europe or the US?

People generally invest and hire people that looks similar to them. It shouldn't be like this, but that's a very common thing to see.

-- From Wikipedia: "Race is another defining factor of Dominican–Haitian relations. The ethnic composition of the Dominican population is 73% mixed race, 16% white, and 11% black; while 95% of the Haitian population is black."

eivindga··on UK and Norway fail to reach fishing deal
The Norwegian fishing industry has commented a bit on the failed talks. It seems the UK negotiators wanted to modify the long running agreement on joint zone access.

Some quotes: "Unfriendly action from the British"

"Norway's entry into the negotiations has been the maintenance of the traditional and historical fishing patterns Norwegian fishermen have had in British waters.

- The British have responded with a number of demands and conditions that are not in line with this, and which it was impossible for Norway to accept. "

"- The lack of concessions on zone access came as a bit of a surprise to us"

eivindga··on 'Coerced into tipping'? How apps are changing the culture of tipping in SF
Tipping should be banned completely. It's discriminatory, feeds into the black economy and is f annoying.

Also, its linked to higher rates of corruption:

Tipping and bribes goes hand in hand...

Great point!

Except that the population density of the US is almost double that of Norway. (We definitely have our share of rural areas...)

eivindga··on Why You Can't Just Block EU Visitors, EU Customers, or Any EU Traffic Under GDPR
You guys really dont understand this law. Or how it is going to be enforced.

EU will regulate what businesses doing business in the EU can do.

All other talk is just noise.

eivindga··on Why You Can't Just Block EU Visitors, EU Customers, or Any EU Traffic Under GDPR
Yes, of course. If they do business in the eu, they will need to comply.

If they don’t do business in EU, then they dont have to follow eu rules.

eivindga··on Why You Can't Just Block EU Visitors, EU Customers, or Any EU Traffic Under GDPR
This is a ridiculous interpretation of the law. Brought to you by some «experts» in Colorado.

If you had followed EU policy discussions over the last 10 years, you would realize this is about creating a single, unified online market.

Meaning a citizen living in Poland should have access to the same online services as a German, unless there are valid reasons for denying him.

eivindga··on Two Weeks Notice Is Bullshit: The Modern Resignation Letter
3 months is the standard in Norway, going both ways.

I have always found the way layoffs being done in the US very strange and unnecessarily dramatic for both parties. If you are leaving, you should be leaving in a professional manner. Do your best at work until the last day of your employment.

Same if you are letting someone go, treat them with dignity and respect until their last days at the company. Telling someone to pack their bags the same day they are getting the notice sounds very cruel.

I don't see how this "burn all bridges" strategy can benefit anyone.

eivindga··on About the EU's Apple tax ruling
I find it hard to see this as anything other than good old tax-avoidance. There is no other reason for having these kind of structure other than to avoid paying taxes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Irish_arrangement

By allowing these kind of structures the Irish government have harmed both the average tax-payer in the Us and Eu.

Kudos to the EC for going after them!

And not very impressive by Ireland and Apple to publicly protest the decision, while not allowing the full report to be published.

-----------

In response, the Danish politician called on Apple and Ireland to allow the release of the confidential ruling so that people could see the detail behind the commission’s arguments.

“If it was up to me, the confidential version would have been published yesterday,” said Ms Vestager.

“I hope that Apple and Ireland will be as open and cooperative as possible in order to let us publish the decision as fast as possible. It is very good for everyone to see our reasoning.”
