einpoklum··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
Hasn't Israel repealed its signature at some point?
einpoklum··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
> "President Trump will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans"

... but his government does support the ICC prosecuting Russians, on behalf of Ukraine, even though none of the two states is a party to the Rome statute / member of the court.

einpoklum··on Show HN: Let your AI agents paint big arrows, boxes and text on your screen
More LLM-authored items about LLM slop.
einpoklum··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
That's a good start. Now they just need to limit use of CoPilot, OpenAI and MetaAI and they'll really be getting somewhere.
einpoklum··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
I would image it's the data the researchers fed the agents and in which a discovery was likely. Especially since it's "candidates", so it's not like a proper discovery.
einpoklum··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
This should probably read: "Researchers discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates. They used Opus 5.5 agents to perform some checks."
einpoklum··on Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code
So, another anecdotal website extolling LLMs, written - so it seems [1] by an LLM. Typical far for HN these days I suppose.

einpoklum··on Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked
I like it when people are willing (and capable, writing-wise) to wear their hearts on their sleeve like that.

Also, I bet the whole blog post's worth would flash through the author's mind within all of 10 seconds whenever they were reminded of the possibility of taking the course. It takes both patience and self-discipline to put it all on paper like that.

Great blog post! Makes me want to take an EMT course :-)

einpoklum··on Commit description as a thinking tool
> Now we are in the era of agentic coding, where everything from code to commit descriptions is written by AI.

No, we are not. Sure, there is a lot of slop-coding/vibe-coding going on, but not much of it in serious code. In my experience and to my knowledge.

Of course, I encounter the opposite problem with humans: They often don't bother to write proper commit messages; and many tend to squash them in favor of giant single-commits which just say "Implemented feature #123".

einpoklum··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
You're treating the state as "we". It certainly claims to be "us", but that claim is - for most world states - partially, or entirely, invalid.

Also, on a semi-related note - there is the legality of gambling, the legality of running a gambling operation, and the legality of doing so for pecuniary gain, and it is possible for just part of these three to be illegal.

einpoklum··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
Ah, another boon of LLMs for mankind. Up there with the use of the 'Lavender' LLM to produce targets for the Israeli military to bomb in Gaza:

einpoklum··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Wow, speedy and convenient! Well done!

Some insights:

* There is sooo much space debris! Dead sattelites and rocket bodies

* Starlink put up a hell of lot of satellites, too.

* There is a pretty dense sphere of items around the earth at geo-stationary orbit, a bit like a mantle; but most of all in a circle on that sphere.

einpoklum··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Wine? Who needs wine to market grapes?

* Grapes are great snacks

* Grape juice is tasty (and you dilute it if it's too sweet)

When they're available, I buy both, quite frequently. I don't like alcohol though - never developed a taste for it; so, no wine for me.

einpoklum··on Dots: Always-on agents
I'll take always-off agents please.
einpoklum··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
> We know that the C++ keyword volatile is used to prevent a value from being optimized in a way that would allow the compiler to keep it in a processor register rather than fetching it from its original memory location each time.

Actually, we don't know that. The meaning of volatile is rather subtle

einpoklum··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
> Mixing C++ with any other language is a huge pain.

It is less pain than for most other languages, except for C. The pain is in exposing a C API for your C++ code. Then you build a library and you're set - because basically every language has the ability to call C code. Python, Rust, Java, etc. etc.

einpoklum··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
Actually it really depends, because allocators can also be kind of smart (and you don't have to use the default allocator).

And then, on the other hand - I really doubt GP's map beats a vector, with all of those pointers bins and stuff, in a non-contrived benchmark with 10 elements.

Finally - it's not either-or: There are better hash maps whose memory is sequentially allocated and/or are otherwise cache-aware. And there are data structures geared towards parallel execution on multiple threads; and towards SIMD; etc. etc.

einpoklum··on Show HN: Reladraw – A diagram language where you decide where to place things
If this were implemented in a language with fewer dependencies, it'd be great.
einpoklum··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
I've used an Android phone for about 10 years now, and I have never once used Google Play.

Yes, Android is a rather Google-ified experience, but there is life outside of Google. Let's live it.

einpoklum··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
> Imagine that a future AI system proposes a radically new design for a one terawatt nuclear fusion power plant

I imagine:

* Massive budget overruns

* Year and year of delays

* It ending up wasting more energy than it produces, or just not working, period

* Politicians disclaiming responsibility and blaming it on "the AI"

* The contractor companies profiting immensely over the entire period, and ending up not having to worry about maintenance, warantees, etc.

einpoklum··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
> I pored over every single line of code Claude generated with razor sharp scrutiny.

That is essentially impossible, since if your pored over individual lines, your scrutiny cannot be razor sharp. There are few people who can pore over code with razor-sharp scrutiny (and different people are better at scrutinizing different aspects).

> Even back in March, you could tell it "give me a function that adds two numbers" and you could be 100% confident that it would write the correct function.

I am doubtful that this is the case. Even that supposedly-naive example is not as trivial as you might imagine, when you consider overflow, defined vs undefined behavior, and floating-point representation details. And you can't be confident like that about a human either.

einpoklum··on What even is an OS now?
That's a pretty good simile in fact. Excel programs are very useful to the people who write them (including myself sometimes); and yet - almost none of them are widely shared, becoming fundamental tools.
einpoklum··on What even is an OS now?
Don't forget systemd :-\
einpoklum··on What even is an OS now?
> Consider: what does computing look like in a world where many (maybe most) applications have an audience of just 1-2 people? How is software distributed? What does it run on?

The same. The slop apps remain just that. They may do something useful for you, but that's it. A bit like a branch in a repository.

einpoklum··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
I ran an experiment where I had this guy fire a gun a million times in random directions. Don't worry, I did it in a closed box (at midday in a crowded street)! Unfortunately, some bullets escaped the box somehow and people got shot - I am quite miffed at how this could happen. I suggest the government regulate this because of how advanced my obstacle penetration technology is. Also please invest $500,000,000,000 in my company soon or we will go bust.
einpoklum··on Allow Carriers on Planes
> a poorly secured rigid baby carrier seat becomes a potentially lethal projectile.

No it doesn't.

einpoklum··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
The first, second and fourth items can be provided for NixOS.

As for the third item - that's not answering my question, it's a homunculus answer: What could the Netherlands have regulated that requires making changes to NixOS? Which NixOS maintainers themselves could not oblige?

einpoklum··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
What is it that they need/add above NixOS defaults?
einpoklum··on F-Droid 2.0
1. Nice! :-)

2. Please donate a few EUR/bucks to F-Droid! It's a good place to get Android apps from, and we can't all just mooch off of it. Doesn't have to be a big donation.

3. I am worried that Alpahbet/Google will kill these "unauthorized" apps soon, so that the new version arriving would be kind of bittersweet. Although - maybe I'll just need to switch to LineageOS or something.

einpoklum··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
