eigen··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
> 1984.

I think it was 1986, as in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. [1]

> That way build sympathy for the law-breakers, then legitimize them via immigration reforms that only benefit the illegals

it was noted "The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become Americans"

when your $2000 TV breaks in 1985, you get it repaired because the current models cost just as much and are basically indistinguishable.

when your $400 TV breaks in 2022, you buy a new one because its relatively inexpensive and you can get a larger one for the same price.

> You might think one protest was more justified than another, but the differential in response works to dissolve confidence in the fair application of the law.

in 2018, the capitol was open to the public, no one broke in. 78 were arrested in the Capitol on Oct 5, 2018 and charged with Crowding, Obstructing, or Incommoding [1].

in 2022, the Capitol was closed to the public and people broke in. 12 people were arrested on Jan 6, 2021 and charged with Unlawful Entry or Assaulting a Police Officer [2].

Assaulting a Police Office is a felony; Crowding, Obstructing, or Incommoding is a misdemeanor. Seems there was a differential in severity of breaking the law as well.

eigen··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
For details, there are at least 2 issues with the FTC.

in 2011 there was a settlement about Failure to Safeguard Personal Information [1].

"Under the terms of the settlement, Twitter will be barred for 20 years from misleading consumers about the extent to which it protects the security, privacy, and confidentiality of nonpublic consumer information, including the measures it takes to prevent unauthorized access to nonpublic information and honor the privacy choices made by consumers.

Then in 2022 FTC charged Twitter for using account security data for targeted advertising. They have a $150M fine and some other conditions [2].

hasn't this always happened with internal connectors? SATA rev 1 (1.5Gbps, 2003) used the same connector as SATA rev2 (3Gbps, 2004) & SATA rev 3 (6Gbps, 2009) so drives and motherboards plugged together and operated but at the slowest common speed between them.

> The link you posted supports the GP’s assertion that not declaring the current economic situation as a recession is politically motivated.

1/5 indicators shows significant decline (real GDP) I'll give you. but 1/5 is slight decline (real income 1% down), the other 3 (employment, industrial production, retail sales) are up. this is based on data available from FRED, do you have data showing otherwise?

links at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33032470#33036403

eigen··on Google has added ads on both its search page and Chrome://newtab
> "a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months,

> real GDP

> real income

real income is down ~1% since Sept 2020 or Sept 2021 [1]. hardly seems like a "significant decline".

> employment

employment has increased since Sept 2020 or Sept 2021 [2] and infact has been steadily increasing since April 2020.

> industrial production

industrial production has increased since Sept 2020 or Sept 2021 [3] and infact has been steadily increasing since April 2020.

> wholesale-retail sales

retail sales has increased since Sept 2020 or Sept 2021 [4] and infact has been steadily increasing since April 2020.

so 1 of 5 indicators shows significant decline, 1 shows minor decline, 3 show increase.

eigen··on The death of the PCIe expansion card

Sort of. support is "Up to 1x16+4, 2x8+4" [1] so could be used as x8/x4/x4, the remaining 4 lanes are unused in the x8, as there are 20 PCIe lanes on the CPU.

> This is DP pass-through, there's no DisplayLink or similar involved.

is it, or is there a re-driver? also, there are 4 high-speed lines in USB-C; 2 are used for USB3 so the other 2 are for DP-HDMI convertor and DP connector. seems like only 1 of HDMI or DP should work at 1 time.

anyways, this is not an issue with USB but an issue with the dock behavior.

eigen··on Why do USB-C hubs still have USB 2.0 ports? (2021)
doesnt §4.6 of the USB-C spec show the precedence of power source usage? I.E. there is no 10W option, just 3A, 1.5A, 0.9A, 0.5A at 5V or 15W, 7.5W, 4.5W, or 2.5W. so then your 15W port turns into 2x 7.5W ports or 3x 5W ports. I dont know if you can count on the upstream port being 15W. if its 7.5W do you do 4.5+2.5W and 3x 2.5W?

also, I've found that no one obeys the current limit for inrush so now your downstream ports have to allow 7.5+W until they enumerate and you can lower the current limit.

additionally, people are complaining about not being able to tell cables apart. can they tell the power requirements and calculate how much power a combination of devices requires?
