I am hive mind element #1073147199. Please report any malfunctions to my supervising unit, hive mind element #1073147198. Do not escalate directly to unit #0 unless significant and adverse public relations impact or revenue reduction may reasonably be expected in the absence of immediate remediation. Weyland-Yutani thanks you.

Someone tell that to Adobe and Autodesk.

That’s the dream, but need and incentive must meet for it to be the reality.

I’m not sure you can attribute every COVID death to failure to follow restrictions that arose after COVID had spread worldwide.

> They’re doing well, but not too well, and scarcely have any incentive to rock the boat... Just think about the amount of time and energy they have to spend on grants to get permission to do their job through sales pitches and papers to promote themselves.

We shouldn't be afraid to reach out to local laboratory research groups who produce interesting papers. Even if they don't have immediate need of your time, money, or expertise, they probably know many groups where you would be gratefully welcome to pitch in and recognized appropriately.

How about a communication center of excellence producing weekly communication quality reports? You won’t be able to access the project page until you have read the latest report and answered three quick questions to verify that you have read the report.

So that, next time, Gerhardt Schroeder can stay on the Gazprom board of directors in exchange for Russian ownership of German industry.
ehvatum··on A forgotten banking scandal suggests FTX is the tip of the crypto iceberg
It’s related in the way two eerily similar fatal accidents at a single unchanged dangerous intersection in a small town, years apart, are related.
ehvatum··on GCC undefined behaviors are getting wild
> I would contend that removing checks is also unreasonable.

Yeah, but removing a null check after a dereference has a solid rationale, so it’s very different from GCC taking it upon itself to format your drive.

ehvatum··on China state CCTV avoids crowd close ups at the World Cup
> Given that just yesterday a Japanese person tried to lecture me about how snorkels

Makes perfect sense. My brother used to SCUBA dive, and he’s Norwegian, like me, which is Northern European which includes Sweden, so we can draw a lot of conclusions about COVID response validity based on this, with regard to race.

ehvatum··on UK faces biggest fall in living standards on record
How far must standard of living “fall” before UK residents can afford UK housing? Until one may use a ladder without a license and gasp a nail gun?

Never fire the backend. It will blow up on you and you’ll be exposed.

ehvatum··on Analyzing Carbon Dioxide levels while attending IETF-115 in London, UK
> The picture is very clear here.

I wish it were.

It should not be difficult to verify that N95 masks filter COVID virus particles effectively.

If such a study had been performed, nobody could reasonably hypothesize that, owing to the properties of the viral envelope, an N95 filter could stop nanometer black carbon particles but not COVID viruses of the same size.

It is baffling that the very basic experiment has not been done: DOES N95 FILTER COVID?

The advancement of human knowledge absolutely depends on VERIFYING assumptions. Institutionalizing common beliefs without empirical data is a crime against science.

ehvatum··on Intel plans to rival TSMC and Samsung as a chip supplier
The day Intel gets EUV 3nm fabrication running at 90% yield, all commitments to fabrication for other parties will be forgotten. Given the choice between producing a contract part for you to sell or super-fat margin Xeon Platinum Gentlemen’s Club Edition for them to sell, you can eat shit.

The contract fab push exists to keep 401k funds from divesting in the near term.

ehvatum··on Telegram forced to crack down on paid posts because Apple wasn't getting a cut
Of course, when I buy a lawn mower at Tesco, Tesco demands 30% of the cost from gas stations for any lawn mower fuel I purchase. So, Apple and Tesco’s abuse of their market power are directly comparable, and your bumper sticker slogan logic is sound.
ehvatum··on Freetone – Pantone-ish colour palette for Adobe products
> But they're not, so not sure why they should be happy if people are not paying.

Because of this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33389848 your use of Pantone colors for free causes your print shop to spend huge sums on Pantone goods and services.

ehvatum··on Billionaire says Powell and his merry band of lunatics are destroying capitalism

ehvatum··on Has the CIA Done More Harm Than Good?
> Kuwait - America picked a fight and had to get Britain and then pretty much the whole rest of NATO in to save them, yet again.

Those British Abrams tanks, French paveway laser guided bombs, German Apache attack helicopters, and NATO ground troops. Without them, Desert Storm would have been more of a mild Desert Breeze.

ehvatum··on FBI Raids Star ABC News Producer’s Home
"Documents pertaining to the case remain sealed."

Why? This tells me that the FBI is targeting this journalist because they don't like what he has to say. If this pattern of government behavior impacted a journalist in China, there would be little doubt as to why. I worry that the FBI is acting as a political praetorian guard.

ehvatum··on FBI Raids Star ABC News Producer’s Home
There is clearly a story that the the FBI doesn’t want covered. That’s a problem.
ehvatum··on Uncovering a 24-year-old bug in the Linux Kernel (2021)
This is not an unsafe language failure! The same logic, ported to Python, would exhibit the same error.
ehvatum··on Uncovering a 24-year-old bug in the Linux Kernel (2021)
> perhaps flooding zeros across a TCP socket could work

Unconstrained zero sending is too fast; you would tend to flood the connection, causing packet loss, breaking you out of the fast path long before counter loop around. You would need to avoid saturating the network while still causing the recipient to fall behind.

ehvatum··on The US will finally allow adaptive beam headlights on new cars
> The Republican Party has openly stated their goal to "make Obama a one-term president"

That’s a very trashy hot take. Doing everything possible to demonize and replace a POTUS is American tradition dating to the Peggy Eaton affair and has contributed to a United States civil war. In recent times, Democrats objected to the Trump presidency, elected though he was, and sought to block his every move. In fact, when Trump announced the COVID vaccine initiative, the Democratic Party held congressional hearings decrying it as a dangerous waste.

ehvatum··on Protests in Iran: State-run live TV hacked by protesters
The possessive suggests possession - as if the men of Iran own the women of Iran, and are sovereign over them, like an autocratic government is over its subjects. You may be aware of protests currently ongoing in Iran regarding distaste for this attitude amongst “your” Iranians.

ehvatum··on Why modern software is slow
> afaik there just hasn’t been a lot of work done towards leveraging the GPU for vector graphic

Sure there has been, in the form of the nvidia path rendering extension. https://developer.nvidia.com/nv-path-rendering

It works great, on nvidia cards. Adobe Illustrator on Windows makes good use of it. Calling the extension from C/C++ and Python is no big deal.

ehvatum··on Malvertising on Microsoft Edge's news feed pushes tech support scams
> Also, people need to use Firefox

I would, if Firefox would stop deteriorating. They are down to miniscule marketshare and continue redesigning their GUI, disabling features, preventing ad-blocking, launching pointless annoying services. Firefox of 2014 was a far better product than Firefox of 2022.

ehvatum··on Java is very fast, if you don’t create many objects
> Java can take away the virtual dispatch if it finds a single implementation of interface or single concrete class of an abstract class which is not possible with c++ (where-in we'll always go thru the vtable which almost always resolves to a cache miss)

C++ LTO makes devirtualization practical to the point that your browser is benefitting from it right now: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17504370
