I am hive mind element #1073147199. Please report any malfunctions to my supervising unit, hive mind element #1073147198. Do not escalate directly to unit #0 unless significant and adverse public relations impact or revenue reduction may reasonably be expected in the absence of immediate remediation. Weyland-Yutani thanks you.

ehvatum··on Understanding Glibc Malloc (2015)
I think it’s for people who have been coding in user land for a long time, but never actually dug into how glib’s heap memory management works.

It’s a pretty dry topic, important though it is, and I appreciate sploitfun taking the time to give me a tour through it.

ehvatum··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
> Start by owning the datacenter

But then, when uncontrolled inefficiencies need to gobble up more hardware, you would have to buy, install, network, maintain, and understand this new hardware.

ehvatum··on Nuclear power plant leaked 1.5M litres of radioactive water in Minnesota
> Investing in nuclear today prolongs the climate crisis.

This kind of willfully blind thinking continues our reliance on fossil fuels. There is a need for reliable energy that cannot yet be met by renewable energy. For this specific reason, Russia funded German opposition to nuclear power.

ehvatum··on My thoughts on “bad code”
It might have improved in the last few years, but as of 2018, MSVC would not do named value return optimization for the case where all branches returned the same local variable, in my experience. There had to be just the one penultimate return statement, in order for NRVO to kick in.
ehvatum··on Twitter insiders: We can't protect users from trolling under Musk
Twitter insiders: it was absolutely normal and correct and ideal for Iran, the Taliban and President Maduro to post to twitter regularly, while we banned the sitting US President. Anything else would be trolling.

ehvatum··on Alaska’s Fisheries Are Collapsing
If this were true, there would be a marine zone of death near Fukushima that dissipates with distance. For the Bering Sea to be so impacted, the Pacific near Japan would be entirely devoid of life, and it isn’t.
ehvatum··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
> Which still disagrees with every other agency.

But that is a lie. From the article:

“The Energy Department now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory.”

ehvatum··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
> Did they roll their own?

For example, in the US, Francis Energy quickchargers require a Francis Energy RFID card or use of their app.

Some gas station pump terminals will allow you to pump your debit card’s available balance and no more. No charger I have come across can do this, billing some arbitrary amount like $40 that is eventually replaced with the correct expense, if not outright requiring credit. Forget paying with cash, even for quick chargers located at gas stations.

ehvatum··on Turkey’s earthquakes show the deadly extent of construction scams
Aw man, if only Democrat super-majority California were not the absolute worst for construction permit hell, you’d have a point.
ehvatum··on The rise of universities’ diversity bureaucrats (2018)
> What would you rather see here?

Viewing race as a quaint and antiquated concept that is completely irrelevant to higher education.

ehvatum··on Stanford needs an official Mastodon server
Could this be done with less than $2 million per year in administrative overhead costs? What if somebody said something true that makes Stanford look bad? A way of adjudicating this and other issues such as racial equity pertaining to Mastadon must be managed by at least ten people earning $200k+/yr in order to sufficiently dilute responsibility amongst people willing to fight to preserve their sinecures. Otherwise, some other unrelated $200k/yr administrator can come along and shut it down.
ehvatum··on San Francisco is getting cold feet about self-driving car tests
The self-driving car could save many more lives by simply not moving at all from its parking spot, except in cases of medical emergency or imminent threat to life mitigated only by moving.

The economy might be improved somewhat by personal vehicular mobility, but we’re talking about human lives.

ehvatum··on San Francisco is getting cold feet about self-driving car tests
> The status quo of having traffic laws be mostly unenforced except in the case of egregious violations and with occasional spot enforcement is closer to optimal than the jackboot fantasy.

This allows for oppression via selective enforcement and is absolutely a jackboot fantasy.

ehvatum··on Copyright Troll Lawyer Can’t Hire an Undercover to Sue More Pirates from Prison
He ended up in solitary due to his recidivism. He can’t help himself and will abuse the system in a maximally vexatious manner unless locked in a box where nobody can hear him.

It’s not pretty, but if he could come to understand the nature of his crimes and cease committing new ones, his problems would eventually end.

ehvatum··on Japan was the future but it's stuck in the past
> Are you another one of those that think everything is going to shit because of immigration?

Not everything, but Paris isn’t what it used to be.

ehvatum··on Britishvolt: UK battery startup collapses into administration
Reminds me of Chanje, the Chinese EV manufacturer that went bust. I bought one of their beluga-enormous white vans from Ryder for a song and it’s wonderful. Chanje scaled all the way up to million unit beluga-enormous EV van production on Chinese government incentives and then immediately went bankrupt when the incentives went away.
ehvatum··on IBM shifts remaining US-based AIX dev jobs to India – source
In the industrial manufacturing world, the documentation, stability, and relative smallness and comprehensibility of FreeBSD are attractive. A public facing example is Beckhoff, who moved from WinCE to FreeBSD. https://www.beckhoff.com/en-us/products/ipc/software-and-too...
ehvatum··on Sony and Honda just announced their new electric car brand, Afeela
“Afeela” is a great brand name for companies in the Sybian space. Reminiscent of “a fella”, but all feel, no fella. “Katana” would be miles better for a car.
ehvatum··on Public Schools Lost More Than One Million Students During Pandemic
It is sometimes better to step out of the way of a barreling misguided consensus that will soon enough dash itself to pieces.

No amount of argument or action could alter Randy Weingartner’s strategy. She was going to close schools nationwide and mischaracterize any criticism of her strategy as anti-science in order to stigmatize her opponents and increase her own person power, until the political environment shifted and she had to be less lazy.

ehvatum··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
It is entirely normal and correct that a free society harbors many diverse and even rancorously disagreeing and opposed political agendas.

Of course we disagree with our political opponents and feel that the policies they advocate are not optimal. It might be convenient to your politics if your opposition’s voice is dampened, but your opposition feels the same of your voice and does so for reasons no less sincere than your own.

That’s the fundamental bargain. You are neither obligated to hand anyone a megaphone, nor obligated to confiscate theirs.

ehvatum··on 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse (2017)
Systemd is certainly not implemented in c++. I don’t think many of the authors are even well familiarized with the language. Look at the chart at the bottom of the project page.

ehvatum··on Apple is struggling to build Mac Pro based on its own silicon
For the record, I played a lot of Creeper CTF mod quakeworld on my Octane MXE. I don’t even want to remember what that machine cost me. Unfortunately, the impact graphics chipset the MXE used in a 4x SLI-like configuration had an issue with sub texture support that kept frame rates in the 20 FPS range.

A single voodoo2 in a pentium2 absolutely trounced the Octane, so my gaming eventually moved to pc and stayed there.

ehvatum··on Apple is struggling to build Mac Pro based on its own silicon
SGI bet what little remained of the farm on Itanium and even sold a handful of Itanium-based supercomputers.

It was an odd strategy from a company that obviously had no future and nothing left to offer. At the time, I had built up so much animus against SGI for their outrageous pricing and unbelievably annoying FlexLM software licensing that it was amusing to me. Their god damned MIPS Pro compiler spent more cycles checking its license file than actually compiling a small C file. And the FlexLM system was so badly written that it did nothing to stop piracy and any user could trick it into overwriting any file on the system. They claimed to patch it, but never actually fixed it. At least they open-sourced XFS. That was nice of them.

ehvatum··on They Dispense Street Justice, One Defaced License Plate at a Time
Many of those vehicles belong to BIPOC and undocumented immigrants who do the necessary and underpaid jobs required for NYC to function at all.

Vigilante broken-windows policing cannot be the answer to lawless behavior.

ehvatum··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
From my experiences with DMG Mori and Siemens employees servicing my equipment and managed by a 100% electronic appointment booking and part ordering systems, German society is wholly and irrevocably doomed by the move away from physical paperwork.

All German productivity will end and even German language itself will be replaced by grunts and shrugs.

In the end, I got rid of my DMG Mori machine with its Siemens control and replaced it with a Taiwanese machine that functions reliably.

ehvatum··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
I assure you that Ballmer would at the very forefront of aping the latest disreputable, scummy dark patterns while missing the point and forcing tasteless, trashy, ineffectual money grabs that do much to waste your time and little to benefit Microsoft or anybody else.
