eggsmediumrare··on Teachers are leaving and few people choosing the field
There's also the equal and opposite force of experts who have such tight ties to their slice of everything they fail to see alternatives.
eggsmediumrare··on The Sixth Mass Extinction: fact, fiction or speculation?
A lot of my social circle is farmers or children of farmers, and they almost universally consider the farm to be "nature" or at least a close enough thing to nature. I think society just kinda decided that nature is "not city" and that attitude is holding back progress.
eggsmediumrare··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
LOL 500k?! Dude (or dudedette)... That's more than specialist doctors make where I live (Ontario). That's mind boggling money. The average for a very experienced dev here is 120k-ish. CAD. You live in a bubble my friend.
eggsmediumrare··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
"I've never changed jobs over money" and "+/- 100k"... lol, you're in a very, very different position than most of us if "+/- 100k" isn't a fundamentally life-changing kind of +/-.
eggsmediumrare··on Tell HN: Canada Posts systems to be down for 6 hours of “unplanned maintenance”
Doctors make more in the States. The CBC is not an entertainment organization and some things are worthwhile but cannot compete in the market.
eggsmediumrare··on A few things I’ve come to believe in my years in music tech
I think both what you said and what the op said can be true at the same time.
eggsmediumrare··on The Stroad
Likewise in Ontario. Strong term, but gets the point across. I also once saw a dump truck with stickers on either side of the tailgate. On the left, "passing side." On the right, "suicide." Had a big impact on my driving habits... I never, ever pass on the right.
eggsmediumrare··on Wolves make roadways safer
Considering your comment is greyed out (or at least was), I supposed the answer to your last question, for some people, must be yes. I suspect it legitimately doesn't occur to some people that conservation need not be an economic activity.
eggsmediumrare··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
The only thing, and I mean that literally, is how you feel in your head. That's it. Your legacy doesn't matter. Your contributions don't matter. Not really... They only matter if you let their perceived omission make your life in your head feel worse. Find a way to be happy in your head, and you will live a better life than almost all of the people you think are better than you.
eggsmediumrare··on OpenAI’s API now available with no waitlist
People are afraid of being replaced when what we actually should be afraid of is be de-valued.
eggsmediumrare··on OpenAI’s API now available with no waitlist
What a world where people can become multi-millionaires in this way while nurses and teachers can't even get cost of living adjustments.
eggsmediumrare··on Daddy isn’t coming back
Any pronouncement beginning with "they should just..." is almost always born of ignorance.
eggsmediumrare··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
Zuckerberg does not belong in the same complimentary sentence as Newton. Newton pushed humanity forward, Zuckerberg is ripping society apart for money.
eggsmediumrare··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
Thanks for clarifying. I took a less charitable interpretation of your view, can't disagree with this though!
eggsmediumrare··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
Reasonable employment standards aren't "pity." Nor is empathy, actually.
eggsmediumrare··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
This line of thinking falls apart if you think about it for more than 30 seconds. Unfortunately, people don't do that and end up creating legislation with this assumption... That people could just get better jobs (and the implication that they don't because they're lazy).

It makes no sense, though. Who is going to clear tables and wash dishes? Who is going to pick fruit? I picked fruit as a teenager. It sucked. I hated every minute of it, but it has to happen. Your suggestion seems to be making it suck more than it has to in the name of what... motivation? Why not make it possible for every member of our society to live a decent life, even if they happen to not have the necessary faculties (not to mention money, support and time) to be an engineer?

eggsmediumrare··on Pre-industrial workers had a shorter workweek than today's (1991)
I have a feeling there are many of us, but some are too afraid to admit it.
eggsmediumrare··on Why can't we build nice neighborhoods anymore?
It's a sad situation made worse by stupid urban planning that prioritizes cars.
eggsmediumrare··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
That's like saying a family doctor will just ask you if you're feeling alright. I know optoms who have found parasites, diabetes, cancer... The complete disregard for an entire field of medicine in this thread is astounding...

*Edit, saw your comment about not referring to the entire checkup.

eggsmediumrare··on Private jet rage grows as a record number of fliers strain the system
How else are they going to go see Greta speak?
eggsmediumrare··on The next generation of cobblers are focused on sneakers
I just wear my hockey gloves until the palms are completely gone. More money to spend on unnecessary sticks :|
eggsmediumrare··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
If he was attacked by the wolf a few times among the false alarms, your comparison would be valid.
eggsmediumrare··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
The predictions of a few individuals 30 years ago don't have nearly the same weight, at least to me, as the predictions of an international body of climate and earth science experts with 30 years of data and modelling experience behind them.
eggsmediumrare··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
Why do some incorrect predictions completely invalidate the devastatingly correct ones?
eggsmediumrare··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or something... It seems like your "carbon burners" are just people who can't afford a house in SV, solar panels, new appliances, and 3 electric vehicles.
eggsmediumrare··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
Why?
eggsmediumrare··on A Compass for the Politics of Collapse
Clean tech and carbon capture is solving climate change. I think the post above meant collapse is inevitable if we continue to do nothing. The IPCC doesn't exist to model human responses to climate change, so would have nothing to say on the subject of collapse. Perhaps inevitable is not entirely accurate... But "very likely" seems prudent.
eggsmediumrare··on How good is Codex?
It's not a good thing for those 25 other engineers.
eggsmediumrare··on Disinformation for hire, a shadow industry, is quietly booming
There are a lot of industries like this and a lot of people on HN who need to reevaluate their career choices.
eggsmediumrare··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
