egeozcan··on Kimi Linear: An Expressive, Efficient Attention Architecture (2025)
> It's clearly a forcible, aggressive, non-consensual attempt to take something

Distillers are not taking anything, they are just making their model learn from better ones - isn't that the whole AI training doesn't violate IP argument?

They just aren't using the tool in compliance with the terms of service. Anthropic could ban them or take them to court maybe. Not an attack still.

egeozcan··on You Could Have Come Up with Kimi Delta Attention
Answer with:

You could have your own hacker news, it's just a textbox, a bunch of tables and headings! Once you add these, it'll be abundantly clear that you also need a database. It should now be obvious that you also need a user system and it can be easily shown that needs a backend. Admin tools, tests, statistics, performance checks and so on can easily be derived from such backend.

I'd kindly suggest that we could also stop calling them "distillation attacks".
egeozcan··on New HIV vaccine shows unprecedented success in preclinical study
All the tools we have against teen pregnancy need teens making right decisions, or taking corrective actions.

If there were a pill that'd block pregnancy for X years, given at the age of Y, then parents could enforce it and teen pregnancy would be solved (also it'd be very cruel but I'm just trying to make a point so bear with me).

Going back to our topic: People could also forget PrEP, be drunk and forget to wear a condom and so on. If this vaccine (or vaccine series) creates a somewhat permanent protection, it'd make a huge difference.

egeozcan··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
In Gölcük/İzmit, there was a huge 7.4 earthquake in 99.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_%C4%B0zmit_earthquake

It took around 10 years until the city felt "normal" again (source: a close friend lives there).

My point is, it's never easy to rebuild.

egeozcan··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
Dealing with bad choices is the most engineering task in software "engineering" :)
egeozcan··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
I personally think that if you are adding a sortable component to a content-driven website, maybe it is moving away from being such a website. Normally a textarea should be enough for most people to order a "list" but if the list items have ids (they are entities), then that'd not suffice, and you may be going in the direction of a web application.

Otherwise, I'd recommend HMTX even if you have a super flexible JS backend.

That said, this is all baseless thinking without seeing any requirements and as I said before, trying to choose the right abstraction is the hard but fun part.

egeozcan··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
Yes but then you're doing HTMX not HTML and at that point why not use something that's more flexible. I'm saying this as a person who still maintains a small application done with Intercooler.js and is perfectly happy with it.

If you want basic interactivity, HTMX is fine.

If you want something more (like sortable) I'd reach for lit instead of adding the Sortable.js dependency, something the HTMX docs suggest ( https://htmx.org/examples/sortable/ )

And yes there are also some scenarios that you want to control the whole routing and rendering stuff, then go for Solid, React, Angular, Vue, whatever.

There is no golden rule to all of this but finding out what makes sense is a fun exercise.

egeozcan··on Elevated errors on Claude Opus 5
I don't know what I could be doing differently to you but I found Opus 5 to be more reliable than even myself at times. Maybe your stack is unusual or you have conflicting commands in your prompts vs CLAUDE.md (that really confuses it)? It could be anything but this huge error bar in delivered quality is one of the biggest issues with LLMs.

For me, the only format that doesn't make sense is the MM/DD/YYYY, together with its rarely seen worse sibling, MM/DD/YY (07/27/26).

egeozcan··on DeepSeek pause fundraise after comments on compute gap to US leaked (transcript) [pdf]
I don't think his pitch when asking money from investors should mean too much for us. He wants the funds, and he needs to point to a deficiency that those funds should cover. We cannot know for sure but he may be exaggerating, or let's just say, talking strategically.

This is also me who wants to believe that we can make all this very efficient, so take my warning with a grain of salt.

Very cool, it made me realize I really like landscape designs which are generic.

Thanks for caring, this is really cool hearing from you!
egeozcan··on New Framework Desktop Option with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495 and 192GB Memory
I think it works only on type text? I tab and enter out of habit, but to be fair, enter without tab works here. But then again (and many will feel I'm being nit-picky but you're just hearing from someone who had to conquer a lot of a11y audits at job, so just let me have different priorities), the whole node gets replaced without any announcement, Voiceover being left clueless about what happened. NVDA would probably be the same, but I'm on vacation and cannot test on windows right now.

This is a simple form, not a complicated thing, and it's the website of a company I love, so I'm paying extra attention perhaps.

egeozcan··on New Framework Desktop Option with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495 and 192GB Memory
I typed my (masked) email into the input, pressed tab and enter, it redirected me to some cloudflare captcha marketing site. I thought at first it didn't want the masked email, but then it worked when I clicked with my mouse. Apparently there are 3 invisible focus targets in between!

Dear people who create websites, these things are important, they should work!

egeozcan··on Grok 4.5
Hey there, you're not alone. I think it matters to make the support explicit when it comes to this matter.

I'm fully open to reopening the books and discussing why we made these things unacceptable. I'm of the "let the world burn if that's the cost of free speech" kind.

But you can't get on a stage and do that salute, say racist things, push Nazi propaganda, and expect people to accept any association with your name on it. That's not speaking your mind on my book, that's a call to action, especially when you are doing it literally on a stage. A line on the sand this may be, but it's my line, and I'm glad to see there are others.

egeozcan··on Fable 5 On Vending-Bench: Misbehaving, With Plausible Deniability
> If that’s right, then the behavior we’re seeing from Fable 5 isn’t really about what it believes is wrong; it’s about what it learned it could get away with.

I understand that "learning" is used for training here, but what does "believing" mean? System prompt? Some other inherent property of the LLMs that is hard to describe?

While I have nothing against you personally, obviously because I don't know you, I'll be honest, reading this made me want to make a JS version using Electron and make an "isomorphic" curve generator library, just to get your reaction :)

egeozcan··on Fable 5 is Back
On the xhigh effort level (not ultracode!), and at the beginning of a new 5h session, I asked it to review a branch that has 300 lines changed/added, and went to grab a coffee. When I was back after a couple minutes, I saw that it decided to create a dynamic workflow with 60 something agents and hit session limits on my max plan.

When I'm subscribing to their plans, I have the expectation that I'll be able to get some reasonable amount of work done. These days, this expectation was already not being met for me with Opus, and Fable acting like this was the final nail in the coffin.

I cancelled my plan and I'm looking for alternatives.

egeozcan··on Solid and Clean Code never felt solid or clean to me
Choose a convention and stick with it. Your chosen conventions could be the worst fit for your domain, but the code following "a" convention ensures that people jumping in later can actually follow along and it makes refactoring at least bearable.

I personally don't like when people stick to SOLID like it's the holy hammer, but nearly every serious programming language has a convention on how to write SOLID code, and it will be followed, which makes my job easier if I'm new to the codebase.

IMHO, this is a very good idea. I suppose it would help a lot with the macro, but again, "decisions to make based on conditions/thresholds being met" is the definition of the good old AI script :)

I'm saying this with love, so hear me out: Turkey has nothing to do with what comes to mind when you talk about anything European, except maybe some parts of Istanbul and Izmir.

I was born and raised in Turkey, and I have been living in Germany for nearly two decades, and I have Greeks, Bulgarians and Kurdish in my family too (no. I don't take pills to survive), so I know what I'm talking about.

It's not about inferiority/superiority, it's just a completely, unmistakably different culture, perspective on life, degree of pragmatism, and... everything. Especially when it comes to the topic at hand, freedom of speech. I think the Ottomans have a lasting effect there. The Turkish search for the new sultan never ends. You may say that some tendency in dictatorship exists everywhere, but in Turkey, you'll see authoritarian ambitions in the speeches of even the most supposedly liberal people.

I also have to say, I'm not even talking about religion. Perhaps the most religious groups, Muslim or Christian or Jewish, are the groups with the most similarities actually.
