efoto··on A viable solution for Python concurrency
"The biggest source of problems might be multi-threaded programs with concurrency-related bugs that have been masked by the GIL until now."
efoto··on Anticipatory Procastrination [pdf]
It would appropriate to quote one old saying, possibly originated in armed forces of a certain country: "do not rush to execute an order, it will likely be canceled"
efoto··on Apple’s head of security indicted in Santa Clara County CCW case
I've lived in a couple of countries where bribes are a way of life. I'm happy it's not the case in CA.

Still, does anyone here know of a country, where artificially limiting resources do not encourage to bribes? Better yet, if somebody names a country, where bureaucrats are by law forbidden to limit the resources artificially, I'll strongly consider immigrating.

efoto··on I lost €4k in a Facebook scam
I'm surprised that OP didn't notice misspelled vocher prominently visible on multiple screenshots.
efoto··on Good vibrations: acoustic technologies in cars
Very interesting indeed: "In fact, more small-particle pollution comes from the action of car brakes and tyres than from the exhaust fumes of current internal-combustion engines – a testament to the effectiveness of catalytic converters and to modern fuel-injection systems."
efoto··on Google deleting mentions of Wumao within seconds
Sounds like a misconfigured filter or a mistrained AI. Garbage in – garbage out.
efoto··on Stress hormones in our diet may be a missing link between food and wellness
I would not be this dismissive, considering the studies showing starkly different effects of acute vs chronic stress, for example [1].

efoto··on Drugs that tamp down inflammation in the brain could slow cognitive decline
Not that fast. Unfortunately, "Why We Sleep" appears to be rather controversial.

efoto··on A new clothing line confuses automated license plate readers
Feeding the licence plate databases junk is a neat, but rather expensive idea.

efoto··on Living on the wrong side of a time zone can be hazardous to your health
As it often happens, the paper is ignoring people with DSPD aka night owls. We almost never see sunrises, and I wish we had a permanent DST to have later sunsets and longer daylight.
efoto··on ZeroNet: Decentralized websites using Bitcoin cryptography, BitTorrent network
Bitcoin crypo (sic!) in the title is funny.

Update: cool, the title is fixed, this comment downvoted.

efoto··on China Bans the Word 'Leica' on Social Media
In an unfortunate act of self-censorship, the video has been now removed from YouTube.

Update: while the video linked by the article has been removed, here it is: https://youtu.be/dQpKcw-n330

efoto··on The three princes of Serendip: Notes on a mysterious phenomenon
A nice one by Julius Comroe:

“Serendipity is jumping into a haystack to search for a needle, and coming up with the farmer’s daughter.”
efoto··on Maria Konnikova Shows Her Cards
Not necessarily Google AI. But AI is already at pro poker level.

efoto··on 23andMe Sold Access to Your DNA Library to Big Pharma, but You Can Opt Out
(ready to get down-voted) why would I want to opt out if somebody uses my anonymized DNA to try discovering a potentially life-saving drug?
efoto··on Ask HN: Laid-off readers over 50, have you left the tech workforce?
I am over 55, software engineer from SF Bay Area. I was laid off in March and just accepted one of the offers. So, no, not leaving the tech at all.
efoto··on I Was a Russian Facebook Troll Named Martha
TL;DR A dormant FB account gets highjacked, but the amateur thief forgets to change the email associated with the account. This allows the owner to deactivate the account.

I doubt the authors conclusion about russian troll though: a FB account highjacked by somebody using Cyrillic can be utilised for various purposes.

efoto··on The Worst Hyperinflations in History: Hungary in 1946 (2014)

efoto··on House Votes to Renew Surveillance Law, Rejecting New Privacy Limits
1. Google engineers took the challenge personally and there is no evidence suggesting Prisma capabilities were regained. 2.I tend to agree in a sense that it is rather difficult to delete all the data. But no more difficult, than to find it later when requested by law enforcement.
efoto··on How to Think Like a Medieval Monk (2017)
TL;DR imagining yourself dying every day, meditating on it, will change your brain in a way that will make you a better person. This technique is about one thousand years old.
efoto··on House Votes to Renew Surveillance Law, Rejecting New Privacy Limits
Google search uses HTTPS and, unless you personally is a target and/or your devices are hacked, the content of your searches is not visible to anyone except Google. Your citizenship doesn't matter.
efoto··on Intel has released new CPU microcode for download
The linked Intel page is a mess.

It is titled "Linux* Processor Microcode Data File Version: 20180108 (Previously Released) Date: 1/8/2018"

Below, however, you can see highlighted "A newer version of this software is available. Click here to get the latest version of this software." This, though, points to an earlier ("Version: 20171117 (Latest) Date: 11/17/2017") version: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27337/Linux-Proces...

(one hour later) UPDATE: appears to be fixed. Well, not really, only if the link specifies the product, i.e. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27431/Linux-Proces...

efoto··on Show HN: Effects of House and Senate Bill on California Residents
I apologize for missing your question.

Well, first I used the new brackets to calculate the tax and found us slightly in the black. Then I dug out my last year tax return, added four numbers -- income tax, property tax, mortgage and donations -- subtracted proposed 24K standard deduction and applied our new bracket (35%) to the difference. Subtracted the first number. Felt robbed.

That said, I'm waiting for my CPA to get back to me with the projections for 2017 along with the tax reform impact estimate.

efoto··on Show HN: Effects of House and Senate Bill on California Residents
Not taking property and mortgage interest into account, this tool is misleading at best! I just did my projections. This calculator shows our family will benefit slightly, when in fact our taxes will increase approx. 25K or 40% per year.
efoto··on Using Cryptocurrency Smart Contracts to Sell Shares of My House

efoto··on Deprecated Linux networking commands and their replacements
The post is from 2011 and it's been awhile since I started using 'ip' instead of 'ifconfig', but everybody, myself included, seem to continue using 'netstat' and not 'ss'.
