efdee··on I’m writing a new vector search SQLite Extension
Why do people write comments like this? What does "grow up, people" add to anyone's understanding of the topic? It's so annoying. Is it supposed to make you look better? It doesn't.
efdee··on Remake of the Windows 95 Solitaire game
Nitpicking but the original is from Windows 3.0 ;-)
efdee··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
Sure, but that is hard because religion is such a big part of our history. There aren't many large scale things from the past you can describe without talking about the influence of religion, because well, religion was there and it was pretty prominent.

However, that doesn't say much about whether religion was necessary for morality to substantiate. In fact, so many immoral things have been carried out in the name of religion, that you might as well wonder if we would have been much more morally advanced by now if it hadn't been for religion.

efdee··on Ask HN: Why is Google search unusable lately?
I've been using Kagi for almost a year now and I have to say I don't miss Google search even one bit.
efdee··on Remote access giant AnyDesk resets passwords and revokes certificates after hack
Yikes. Thanks for that!
efdee··on Cable companies, automakers try to derail FTC, FCC quest to kill misleading fees
Same here in Belgium and most other EU countries that I'm aware of. Advertised price must be final price including VAT.
efdee··on Remote access giant AnyDesk resets passwords and revokes certificates after hack
Teamviewer hasn't worked for me in years. At some point it started to claim I was using it for commercial purposes, and even after convincing support that this wasn't the case, I've never been able to maintain a connection for longer than a minute since.
efdee··on Remote access giant AnyDesk resets passwords and revokes certificates after hack
I've turned to RustDesk since last week, and so far so good. It's open source and if you self-host the rendezvous server, it's effectively free.
efdee··on Reading QR codes without a computer
Just wanted to say this sounds like a fun project and you must have been pretty happy when it ended up working out!
efdee··on FAA orders grounding of more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9s
I'm just going to leave you with this frightening quote: "They said there was a kid in that row who had his shirt was sucked off him and out of the plane and his mother was holding onto him to make sure he didn't go with it."

Shirt sucked off him. Mother was holding onto him. Oh hello, a thousand nightmares of my youth.

efdee··on Google Makes over $92B per Year by Owning Android
So you have to write a replacement for the Google apps and get driver support. Sounds a hell of a lot easier than writing your entire OS from scratch.
efdee··on The British Library URL has been offline due to cyberattack for 10 days
Not really, since in the context of a store, "location" often refers to an instance rather than it's location coordinates.

A better analogy would be saying the store's address is closed. Doesn't make sense.

Sorry for the late reply.

> We are saying the same thing. Yes, you can use the tools, but then you require consent from the user as the very first thing they see on your website. No, you only require to get consent from the user before you start using the tools. That this is as soon as they enter your website, and thus you need to ask consent as the very first thing they see, is your own choice.

> As a non-EU national, I don't derive the benefits of Do Not Delete etc. I do not ever care that a site is using 3P cookies to do e.g. on-page analytics. The cookie banners are a net negative for me. I'm sorry that you're not getting any benefits from it. That said, blame the site owners for incorrectly identifying your IP as a European one.

I don't get your point. You are allowed to use those tools, but if you do, you need to get the user's consent.

What you are looking for is a way to use these tools, of which you don't really know what they're going to use this data for or how and why they are tracking me, without my consent.

I find it very strange that this is something you object to.

> proxy war between USA and Russia in Ukraine

That's a pretty hot take considering what happened.

efdee··on Pokémon is no longer just a game – it's a lifestyle
Pokemon Arceus was very nice, actually.

I agree with all the games coming out in the "classic" line of Pokemon though.

efdee··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
Nothing at all. But writing "Microsoft" as "Micro$oft" is just childish and it taints your otherwise potentially valid message. Do you also refer to Windows as "Winblows" maybe?
efdee··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
You'd do yourself a favor by not referring to them as "M$". It taints your entire message, true or not.
efdee··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
I've never visited a brick and mortar store's website to check their opening hours and assumed it would be anything other than in their local timezone.
efdee··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
It absolutely does not. Take a look around at acquisitions in general and count how many acquired teams are still doing their thing.
efdee··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
There's no time zones involved in that at all. Nobody is going to be checking the opening hours of a Home Depot in another timezone and expect to get the date in their local timezone.
efdee··on .NET 8 Standalone 50% Smaller On Linux
To be fair ASP.NET Web API was just the natural progression of ASP.NET MVC which is based on Monorail more than anything else. You're making it sound like the community was set on ServiceStack and then MS reeled them back in, but the truth is not many people were using ServiceStack back then, they were using ASP.NET MVC which had things like JsonResult and whatnot that would get you a long way.

That said, ServiceStack has transitioned to payware a long, long time ago and I'm pretty sure that is what's caused its demise, not ASP.NET Web API. As a single anecdotal data point, it's definitely the reason I'm not using it.

efdee··on .NET 8 Standalone 50% Smaller On Linux
Calling ServiceStack OSS is disingenuous since it comes with quite a heavy price tag for commercial use.
efdee··on Mastering DOM manipulation with vanilla JavaScript
No, jQuery existed for that reason. React has other reasons, one of them being that manual DOM tracking and manipulation is brittle and annoying and the way React works turns that around completely.

I'm not sure what Preact or NakedJSX offers me that would make it a better choice than React.

efdee··on Microsoft is removing Maps and Movies and TV from Windows 11
Paint 3D is actually a fun tool for kids, much more enjoyable than the regular Paint.
efdee··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
The overhead is only the latency of the ajax call on the first load (since you are going to the server to fetch the app code, then going to the server again to fetch the data, instead of going to the server and fetching the app code + the data).

For every consequent page transition the performance is actually slightly higher than a full page load since (a) you're probably only fetching JSON instead the entire resulting rendered HTML and (b) you don't have to load the app code any more.

efdee··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
What makes you feel that react-router encourages this?
efdee··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
I too dislike the current UI trends and I still think Django Admin is an ugly piece of software. It was ugly 10 years ago and it's still ugly today. It gets a lot of simple design things like margins very wrong.

It's purely visual though. It's a great piece of software to get out of the box.

efdee··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
I have no idea what would make you say such things other than a deep, unrational hatred for a framework.

Nothing about React specifically enables that kind of design.

efdee··on How to compete with Patreon
I'm not sure how representative my personal data point is, but I don't really pay attention to the perks. I pick a tier based on how much money I want to send their way.
