eeeficus··on Why Gentoo?
This a trap! Don’t answer!
eeeficus··on Mercurial, 20 years and counting: how are we still alive and kicking? [video]
Unpopular opinion: Git is better than Mercurial and people just make a big fuss when you refuse to play with their toys!
eeeficus··on Reaffirming our commitment to child safety in the face of EuropeanUnion inaction
When you see the behemots of US tech coming together you can be sure it isn’t for anything good! These assholes are supporting and enabling the orange clown (a suspected pedophile) and they want us to believe that they suddenly care about the children.
eeeficus··on Sparse File LRU Cache
You introduce overhead on both read and write without being a better solution to OPs problem.
eeeficus··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
French fries is not a french invention AFAIK but belgian!
eeeficus··on QNX Self-Hosted Developer Desktop
A bit dissapointed by this. You have to create an account, get a license, deploy it and then you get a fucking download manager just for linux and windows to download who knows what that should run on qemu. Why not just give a link to a qemu image with a script that runs it?
eeeficus··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Not a problem at all. I’m not sure why you feel the need to focus on all the un-interesting parts. The interesting parts are what he said and weather or not those are true. Not sure why is more important who said what, rather than what was said especially if this doesn’t add much to the original discussion… it just misdirects attention without a clear indication to the motive!
eeeficus··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
There’s always someone with the buzzkill. Do you think is really that hard, for those who care, yo find all these sad facts? FFS man, let us celebrate the good a little bit. In this world is really not that hard to find the bad!
eeeficus··on This World of Ours (2014) [pdf]
Sounds like you found nerd heaven. I couldn't imagine a situation like yours in my world! :)
eeeficus··on A senior Apple exec could be jailed in Epic case
I don’t think comparing Apple to Steam, is an apples to apples comparison. AFAIK Steam doesn’t ask for exclusivity if you publish on its platform. So it is up to the customer to choose how it publishes its products.
eeeficus··on 6th generation x86 CPU Comparisons
Jon Stokes also wrote Inside the machine[1], a great introduction to microprocessors architecture.

eeeficus··on Jeffrey Katzenberg Says A.I. Will Eliminate 90% of Artist Jobs on Animated Films
> Sora is like 80% there, I think we would be 90% there in 2 years time with 5-10x more GPGPU power training.

Don’t underestimate the last 20%! I don’t think this is just a matter of more training or more data. But yeah, 2-5 more years will not change the outcome you’re describing!

eeeficus··on Key OpenAI employees posting "OpenAI is nothing without its people."
The social dynamic of a corporation is not that different from a high school. People evolve rapidly intelectually but not that much emotionally.
eeeficus··on Full Resolution Photo Archive
Full of critics in here. I’m not sure what service these “analysts” think they’re providing but it is so annoying to read these pompous critiques: dude I’m happy I’ll choose one as my wallpaper and dream that I’m special because I found this special photo from a special artist that decided to give his work away for us to enjoy? Wtf are these people rambling about! Enjoy the gift, or not, but please stfu… people aren’t looking for a review to a freebie.
eeeficus··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
I love this kind of naivitee! This is the magic stuff that either takes one to greatness or just a step further into nowhere, but it’s the most fun way IMHO to approach things. Go on OP, write a beautiful story for all of us!
eeeficus··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
This comment should be first comment. Instead, I had to endure the HN intelligentsia writing non-sense with the specific arrogance of know-it-alls!
eeeficus··on Ask HN: How can I come to peace with the years I wasted on pointless things?
Point of life: you didn’t choose to be here but since you are, make something out of it. What is the pleasure or the meaning of just wasting it away?
eeeficus··on Exit interviews are a trap
I agree with the article. If you leave, feedback is not worth it. I always gave honest feedback at exit interviews and felt like shit for a while afterwards. And I don’t understand why companies are doing this, honestly. Take feedback from your employees and really listen! What is the gain to ask for feedback to someone leaving the company? Is it more honest? Then you have a cultural problem because it means your employees are afraid to give honest feedback.
eeeficus··on Google Release Chrome OS Flex
No, of course not! Let’s throw away perfectly good computers. Yes I know that you can use Linux but I expect that if I’m buying a chromebook, I like the OS as well?
eeeficus··on Windows Sysinternals: advanced system utilities and technical information
Yes. Windows Internals 7th edition https://www.amazon.com/Windows-Internals-Part-Developer-Refe...
eeeficus··on How much did AlphaGo Zero cost? (2018)
The OP talks about how much would’ve cost a third party to replicate the experiments. That’s what I get from it anyway.
eeeficus··on Bringing a decade old vector editor back to life
He can, by re-releasing it with minor modifications to use another domain?
eeeficus··on Airbus ran ‘massive’ bribery scheme to win orders
What a demagogic way of phrasing it! So no money ends up in the account of future election campaigns?
eeeficus··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2019
Tech: Operating Systems: Principles and Practice by Thomas Anderson, Michael Dahlin

Non-Tech: Infinite powers: How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe by Steven H. Strogats

eeeficus··on Computational Photography with Luminar 4
If you’re using pretrained models then they should run ok. It’s the same reason why Tensorflow runs on phones: to run models, not necessarily to train models. DNNs take a lot of time to train.
eeeficus··on Extending the Linux Kernel with Built-In Kernel Headers
It’s a simple and practical solution. It irks me for some reason but I can’t think of something better.
eeeficus··on Microsoft is investing $1B in OpenAI
In terms of intelligence, there isn’t. What prevents us from actually building a uber-insect is miniaturization, self sustaining energy production of some kind and reproduction in an artificially built system. I guess it would be possible to demonstrate insect level intelligence by actually replacing an insect brain with an artificial one.
eeeficus··on Linus Torvalds: “Somebody is pushing complete garbage for unclear reasons.”
Why not the other way around? You have the fix enabled and if you don't know you get protected by default. If you really know better then you can disable the fix (via a special CPU instruction), because you know you're not running anything critical?
eeeficus··on Feynman Algorithm (2014)
Why is asking people for something is bad manners? Especially as you put it "extremely bad manners"?
eeeficus··on Addendum to “Curl is C”
well it's 2017. maybe it's time we get rid of C? :)
