Hello, I'm Edward.

I'm running the Geospatial devroom at FOSDEM.

I build web apps, web scrapers, databases, and search engines. I reverse engineer legacy systems and data formats.

Over the years, I've had the privilege to collaborate with internet luminaries like Aaron Swartz, Brewster Kahle, Ted Nelson, Jason Scott, and John Gilmore.

My contributions span a diverse array of projects, including Wikipedia, Open Library, Wikimedia Commons, Debian, OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, the Linux kernel, and BusyBox.

I'm on mastodon: https://hachyderm.io/@edward

edward··on The TV antenna is making a comeback
In 2010 when I lived in the San Francisco I ordered my broadband from Comcast, but I didn't pay for the TV package.

I added a splitter to the Comcast coax cable, then plugged one wire into the cable modem and the other into the back of my TV. Network TV channels for no extra cost.

edward··on Bitstamp Incident Report 2-20-15
"The sender was offering Mr. Kodric the opportunity to join Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the International Honour Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines. The UPE site is hosted within the acm.org domain. On 11 December, as part of this offer, the attacker sent a number of attachments. One of these, UPE_application_form.doc, contained obfuscated malicious VBA script. When opened, this script ran automatically and pulled down a malicious file from IP address 185.31.209.145, thereby compromising the machine."

edward··on How US students get a university degree for free in Germany
The drinking age in the US is 21. This doesn't stop college students from drinking, it just means they can end up in trouble with law enforcement or the university authorities.

US students who study in Europe are free to drink without breaking the law.

Also, some would argue that Germany beer is better.
