slam dunk.

edvinbesic··on Unpacking Elixir: Real-Time and Latency
Is it fairer to say that Elixir compiles to Erlang or that Erlang & Elixir compile to Beam byte code?

Genuine question.

edvinbesic··on Why are our keyboard not wireless?
I’ve had a similar experience of weird intermittent jankyness with what seem like missed keystrokes but are just connection issues.

In addition, I also feel a big benefit of wireless keyboards got diminished with usb-c & thunderbolt. I now plug one cable for power/display/keyboard and whatever other peripherals are connected and it’s hassle free.

(Still use wireless mouse though)

edvinbesic··on Lorapaper: A connected e-paper device that runs on light
I have a couple of lolin boads as well I am using for development. The firebeetle board that is linked is hands down the best esp32 board due to the voltage regulator.

In hibernation with only the RTC clock running I believe it only consumes 0.008mA which is coin cell worthy with a < 1% duty cycle. With the wemos boards my lowest is around 3-4mA which is still fine but considering price is the same I would recommend the firebeetle ones.

edvinbesic··on Desktop Linux has a Firefox problem
> I’m genuinely worried about the state of browsers on Linux, and the future of Firefox on Linux in particular. I think it’s highly irresponsible of the various prominent players in the desktop Linux community, from GNOME to KDE, from Ubuntu to Fedora, to seemingly have absolutely zero contingency plans for when Firefox enshittifies or dies, despite everything we know about the current state of the browser market, the state of Mozilla’s finances, and the future prospects of both.

So what are you proposing then? It seems so irresponsible to complain about new-buzzword-shittification of something thousands of people contribute to and offer no contribution in return.

edvinbesic··on DHCP is not blocked by ufw/iptables
Upvoted because you are correct. Calling it a bypass almost implies something more nefarious vs saying docker automatically adds its own forwarding rules.
edvinbesic··on YouTube Introduces 1080p Premium
I believe this is to some degree due to chroma key subsampling, where in a 4k stream you will only have 1080p worth of light intensity encoded (cluster of 4px). So if you play an 8k stream and downscale to 4k you actually have full chroma (1:1).

There could of course be other factors involved as well but this is definitely a pretty big contributor.

edvinbesic··on Pixel fucked: Inside Hollywood's VFX crisis
Feels like working in advertising as well, granted it’s been a decade for me but I imagine the “creative” ego trip is still as alive as ever.

edvinbesic··on Time to subsidize e-bikes?
Living in Boulder I have however noticed that most of the trails now have “no e-bike” signs as some of those are closer to electric scooters in terms of speed so YMMV I guess even around here.

That depends on what you're smoking, let's just be safe: time.sleep(3600)
edvinbesic··on Zotero Better Notes – Knowledge management inside Zotero
I cant speak to mobile personally as it is not a use-case for me but as far as conflicts SyncThing works great.

I have been running it for a little over a year now across three primary devices and the server and I don’t think I’ve seen more than a handful of conflicts. Don’t remember a single one with my obsidian directory which is currently ~500 files (markdown/pdf etc).

edvinbesic··on Zotero Better Notes – Knowledge management inside Zotero
Not parent, but I have had a good experience using SyncThing to keep my obsidian notes synchronized across devices.

I have a server at home where I self host a few services and access over tailscale so I have a device that is “always on” and syncing, but prior I used a $5 droplet for much of the same. Can recommend.

edvinbesic··on Ferengi Rules of Acquisition

Not sure what you mean.

edvinbesic··on New Philips Monitor Features an E-Paper Side Panel
I was looking around a few weeks back for any new development on the e-ink monitor front and came across the Boox Mira. There is a 25" monitor and a 13" portable one as well. Pretty pricey for what it is though but the typing experience seems decent.

Also, now that you are on the edge and your form submissions are web scale you likely need to model eventually consistency for the processing so you will need a highly available queue running somewhere.

edvinbesic··on I Returned the Mac Mini M2 Pro
Thank you. I see this all the time where theoretical performance/w or performance/$ purchases are made as if you own a data center. Performance unused is very expensive indeed.

edvinbesic··on Researchers generate hydrogen more efficiently from water
This comment doesn't quite make sense. A hydrogen cell is still just a battery with a different name and those vehicles would still be EVs, no?
edvinbesic··on Bastion – Highly-Available Distributed Fault-Tolerant Runtime for Rust
Taking a cursory look at their example, and this caught my eye:

    supervisor
      .broadcast("A message containing data.")
      .expect("Couldn't broadcast the message.");
As a non-native English speaker, the word expect tricks me up here. Is this use correct?
edvinbesic··on D1: Our SQL database
I'm right there with you. I wonder if this is an SQLite compatible API on top of their own solution, or if it's using actual SQLite under the hood with custom replication.

If the latter, and anyone from CloudFlare is here, is there any chance to have SpatiaLite enabled?

edvinbesic··on DeFi risks and the decentralisation illusion
a) it does matter because despite what you think CeDeFi is only there to create confusion in the industry. Centralized decentralized finance. Which is it?

b) staking has nothing to do with DeFi

edvinbesic··on DeFi risks and the decentralisation illusion
Small nitpick but CeDeFi is a term coined by Binance to make them appear more palatable and competitive. Binance is a centralized network so it's a CeFi foundation with all the controls that come with that, but with a DeFi coat of paint.

Coinbase is a centralized exchange (Cex, not a Dex) so it has little to do with DeFi in general.

edvinbesic··on macOS Monterey
Have you found a consistent way to get color schemes working for vim/tmux when running over mosh?

Haven’t tried mosh in a while but this was my biggest gripe, over what is otherwise an amazing mobile experience.
