educasean··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Any technology can be blamed for “accelerating bad decisions”.
educasean··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
By this standard, no computer has ever accomplished anything, because humans built the computer. AI bubble about to burst any second now.
educasean··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
Learning isn't boring. Homework is incredibly boring.

They aren't assigned based on each student's understanding and mastery of the subject. They're assigned based on the lowest common denominator. It's an incredibly discouraging hoop to jump through for students who actively find joy in learning and discovering new things.

educasean··on OpenAI’s o1 correctly diagnosed 67% of ER patients vs. 50-55% by triage doctors
> human problems can't be solved with technology

How are you defining technology? How are you defining human problems? Inventions are created to solve human problems, not theoretical problems of fictional universe. Do X-rays, refrigerators, phones and even looms solve problems for nonhumans?

Claiming something that sounds deep doesn’t make it an axiom.

educasean··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
All corporations are to an extent. It’s a question of magnitude, not absolutes.

You, too, are driven by money. Yet I’m certain you maintain a set of principles and values. Let’s keep the discussion productive yeah?

educasean··on Project Genie: Experimenting with infinite, interactive worlds
I understand the ultimate end goal to be simulation of life. A near perfect replica of the real world we can use to simulate and test medicine, economy, and social impact.
educasean··on When employees feel slighted, they work less
I actually do not really mean what I wrote. I disliked what the commenter had to say about other people's social skills in a different thread and wanted to get one in. Not my most mature moment.
educasean··on When employees feel slighted, they work less
Perhaps it may help to work on your social skills with more intent. People who often find themselves disrespected at work aren't always bad performers but they do tend to have large social blind spots they themselves aren't aware of.
educasean··on Your brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant
Your brain on calculators.

We find that people having to perform mental arithmetics as opposed to people using calculators exhibited more neural activities. They were also able to recall the specific numbers in the equations more.

... So what?

educasean··on Douglas Adams on the English–American cultural divide over "heroes"
Charlie Brown does feel more like a symbol of a bygone era rather than an embodiment of the 21st century American psyche
educasean··on SendGrid isn’t emailing about ICE or BLM – it’s a phishing attack
Is this an education problem? Should the general public be more diligent in checking the sender domain of the emails they read?

Is this a UX issue? Should email clients highlight and emphasize the sender domain more than their display name?

educasean··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
I see no downsides. Seems like an actually useful udea.
educasean··on The Case That A.I. Is Thinking
The debate around whether or not transformer-architecture-based AIs can "think" or not is so exhausting and I'm over it.

What's much more interesting is the question of "If what LLMs do today isn't actual thinking, what is something that only an actually thinking entity can do that LLMs can't?". Otherwise we go in endless circles about language and meaning of words instead of discussing practical, demonstrable capabilities.

educasean··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
Google Stadia.

They had built a solid streaming platform for low latency cloud gaming but failed hard on actually having interesting games to play on it. You just can't launch a gaming platform with a handful of games that have been available everywhere and expect it to succeed.

educasean··on Pixel 10 Phones
Wow. Either you're extremely unlucky or I'm extremely lucky.

I'm still using my Pixel 6 pro and have had zero hardware issues with this phone or my previous pixel 4.

educasean··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Appreciate the fact digging!
educasean··on US AI Action Plan
MAGA
educasean··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
and I'd be against
educasean··on Supreme Court's ruling practically wipes out free speech for sex writing online
Let's blind all kids. Anyone who is opposed must believe that a non-zero chance of a child seeing two women have sex and eat turds is normal and healthy.
educasean··on Guess I'm a rationalist now
Did you end up presenting the evidence? I'm following the discussion a few days too late, so my apologies if you've already linked to the evidence and ended up deleting it after.
educasean··on Show HN: AI game animation sprite generator
The example sprites aren't loading for me. I see original panda and the female ninja graphics, but the 6 sprite boxes are empty.
educasean··on I do not remember my life and it's fine
I can picture my wife's dead grandfather in my head. When I do, I can almost hear his gruff voice and the mannerisms with which he spoke. My mind also immediately conjured up an image of his garden full of cacti, and the yellow wooden chair that sat beside it.

I believe this is the stuff people with aphantasia struggle with.

educasean··on Figma Slides Is a Beautiful Disaster
Bullet point driven software development always results in apps with terrible UX. Tale as old as time.
educasean··on A South Korean grand master on the art of the perfect soy sauce
Person endorsement for Sir Kensington's ketchup. I find it to be a noticeable improvement over Heinz.
educasean··on The A.I. Radiologist Will Not Be with You Soon
The worry isn't that you'll find an AI sitting on the chair that a radiologist used to sit. It's that the entire field of radiology gets reduced down to a button click on a software.

The other doctors will still be there for you to sue.

educasean··on Fivetran to acquire Census
Congrats to both Census and Fivetran. Census has an amazing product and very good people. Excited to see what's coming next from y'all
educasean··on Adobe deletes Bluesky posts after backlash
You could say the same about most Internet activity: busy people don't have time to post on HN, or make stupid LinkedIn posts. Yet here we all are, reading and writing despite our busy startup lives.
educasean··on How University Students Use Claude
It took me a long time to master the pen tool in Photoshop. I don't mean that I spent a weekend and learned how it worked. I meant that out of all the graphic designers at the agency I was working for, I was the designer who had the most flawless pen-tool skills and thus was the envy of many. It is now an obsolete skill. You can segment anything instantly and the results are pristine. Thanks to technology one no longer needs to learn how to make the most form-fitting curves with the pen tool to be labeled a great graphic designer.

It's remarkable that reading and writing, once the guarded domain of elites and religious scribes, are now everyday skills for millions. Where once a handful of monks preserved knowledge with their specialized scribing skills, today anyone can record history, share ideas, and access the thoughts of centuries with a few keystrokes.

The wheel moves on and people adapt. Who knows what the "right side" of history will be, but I doubt we get there by suppressing advancements and guaranteeing job placements simply because you took out large loans to earn a degree and a license.

educasean··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
Imagine if he stays and obtains some critical information that later happens to get leaked. You're now a prime suspect for the leak, possibly facing charges of something like treason. I think leaving was the wise choice.
