edmond_dantes··on A year without food (2012)
I've went 6 days without eating; I was playing Halo on my PC and was really into it. Lost eight pounds (much of it probably water weight).

edmond_dantes··on Top Tech Companies: You filter on raw IQ, here is how to do it more effectively
I've never been diagnosed. In high school I had an uncharacterized organizational learning disability. Out of desperation I wanted to be medicated and have made the huge step, huge for me, of talking to a doctor who referred me -- we'll see. The stories I've seen on HN have soured my opinion of medicating. I don't want to become addicted or unable to function, less than I already do, without drugs.
edmond_dantes··on Top Tech Companies: You filter on raw IQ, here is how to do it more effectively
My IQ is 136. I can attest that it is not an indicator of anything. I am a lazy, average programmer. Whatever benefit I gain from having a higher IQ is offset by my inability to focus for more than a minute. I don't understand how people can study and lack many basic skills because I aways seemed to sneak by without them. I am a chronic procrastinator, only the fear of having to write a final in 24 hours made me study/cram by pulling all nighters. I have a CS degree and rarely went to class, having collected every letter grade A+ through F, and survived being on academic probation (my semester with four D's and an A+). Just one data-point and a counter-example as to why IQ is not a good measure of anything.

According to Gwern[1]: It is worth noting that studies of human genius frequently say that raw IQ and talent are not helpful past unexceptional levels like 130 IQ; what makes the difference is motivation and the "drive to mastery"

edmond_dantes··on Canada and science: NRC will now only do science that promotes “economic gain”
If research is done purely in the private sector, then how do the research findings make it into the wider scientific community? Especially if the processes become patented. There is no communal well of scientific knowledge to draw from.
edmond_dantes··on Canada and science: NRC will now only do science that promotes “economic gain”
"... at the NSERC conference this week. It's crazy. They don't want to fund research unless it is run in collaboration with an industry partner. It's killing primary research and making all of the scientists crazy."

edmond_dantes··on Name.com Tells Customers To Change Password Due To Breach
Where did you get this information from?

I was curious what algorithm is behind the MySQL PASSWORD() method. According to the MySQL reference manual, "you should not use it in your own applications. For that purpose, consider MD5() or SHA1() instead."[1]

Thanks for explain the difference between hashing and encrypting. I neglected to make that explicit.

However, I disagree with you when you say, "Encrypting a password could be ok," because compromises happen and the attacker could do a memory dump, check the environment variables or perhaps find a location where the password is hardcoded (config or script, yes this happens). It's a sloppy practice that we should discourage. Hashing passwords is the most basic level of security and it's been known for decades.

edmond_dantes··on Name.com Tells Customers To Change Password Due To Breach
Notice they said "encrypted" passwords not (salted password hashes) passwords.

I don't trust "encrypted" password because my experience with Host Gator: I contacted Host Gator support to reset my password and they were able to send me my previous PLAINTEXT password. I asked them how this was possible and they told me that the passwords were encrypted and only a few people had access to it.

People who also have access to it: Anyone who can see the Host Gator email que and the mail-servers the email passed through.

I promptly closed my account with them.

Quoting Adria from a comment in her post: > I don't consider myself a feminist.
edmond_dantes··on The PyCon Incident
What evidence did you find in my comment that privileged women over men? Adria was offended and I disagreed with her assessment of sexism and exclusion.

What your describing isn't feminism, but some kind of matriarchy where we must appease and not offend the ruling class of women.

edmond_dantes··on The PyCon Incident
I am feminist. As a visible minority, heterosexual, cisgendered, able-bodied man I try to be acutely of my own prejudices and cognitive biases.

I sympathize with women who experience hostility and chauvinism at tech conferences. "Brogrammers" and male-exclusive behaviour is bad for the industry and should be written about and exposed.

What these two men did was not sexist. It was unprofessional but it was not exclusionary. Penis puns can be made by anyone and these comments were not meant for an audience, just the two people in question. While not "appropriate" it's not the same, "it's a joke" defense that many make because the subject matter, a play on the words being euphemisms in not material that excludes or generalizes.

Dongles = Penis, Box = Vagina (or workstation), Forking = fucking, etc... is not NECESSARILY exclusionary but of a sexual nature. Context matters. Based on the comments, she took forking out of context. IMHO: These men should have been told that they're a little loud and to knock it off (regardless of the subject matter). They are bot being chauvinists and not being exclusionary.

The firing is unfortunate but they sound like a company you don't want to work for anyway.

Adria was out of line for taking the photo but she's within her right to document her life/encounters. It does open her up to criticism. Personally I'd avoid her because of her inability to judge context and be easily offended. This incident hurts her credibility and I wouldn't trust her opinion in future incidents.
