I did a similar transition. I started doing projects on the side, many of which never worked out. Finally when I got something that got traction I left my job. Your first idea could be the one but most likely it is not. Experimenting first while on the job will reduce your risk considerably.

Hey, congrats on shipping! What do you think is the most likely use case for this?

We are using the github issue tracker. It's not powerful but is easy to use and free ( if you already using github for git hosting )

Saving all this clicks and checking who clicked in what will require resources and will have a small return.

I think that in this case the event will be not "secret".

I have the same feeling, but it's not just code that are "easy" to learn now. I think that things like stanford engineering everywhere, MIT open course and Peter Norving's AI-Class will have a big impact in learning in general.

Working in pair programming with other developers is a great way to learn new stuff.
