edgineer··on Oldest US firearm unearthed in Arizona, a bronze cannon linked to Coronado
No, this 2004 letter specifies that the string with loops on its own, because it was designed to be used to modify a rifle to fire automatically, was a machinegun.

Three years later, in 2007 the ATF decided differently, "Upon further review, we have determined that the string by itself is not a machinegun..."

And at one time a 14-inch long shoestring with a loop at each end was a "machinegun."

edgineer··on Ask HN: Can a 5 year old i7 laptop compete with one made today?
Performance difference between the slowest [0] and fastest [1] "i7" processors is ~100x so it's best to specify the model.

I suggest >9000 passmark score like the 10th gen i7-10710U [2] or newer, or earlier if it is a higher power chip.

edgineer··on Love being interrupted when my monitor asks me to accept user agreements
How about BYO tuner while you're at it?

See the LG 48 CX OLED television versus the Gigabyte AORUS FO48U OLED monitor. The LG was a jump in quality and performance (4K 120Hz) and many people bought it to use as a computer monitor. But it's smart (cannot disable advertising itself over Bluetooth while on), cannot be woken up over HDMI (requires using the remote control to turn on each day) and it does not have displayport in.

The Aorus is the same panel but not a TV, functions as a monitor should, and I would have bought that instead had I known.

If a product finder like alternativeto.net existed, where you find non-shittified alternatives to a popular appliance, I would use it every time I shop.

edgineer··on Homemade AI drone software finds people when search and rescue teams can't
Rafts leaving Libya are incapable of reaching Italy on their own and are scuttled when they see a ship that could rescue them.

The expected value of this gamble is higher when search efforts are high. Migrants would not take this gamble if they were sure it would not work, right?

edgineer··on The algorithm is killing Twitter and it's driving me insane
I don't know what it was like a couple years ago. Today the for you page still gives me a huge smattering of posts, some that I'll check not interested in or block, randomly foreign language posts, and overall feels like an okay balance of chaos and not a bubble to me. But it would be hard to detect that from within, wouldn't it
edgineer··on The algorithm is killing Twitter and it's driving me insane
I started using an account earlier this year to follow some people's news, and after curating the feed find the "content slurry" endless scroll not terrible for recent news/trends/memes/music/whatever.

I've heard the complaints that twitter was ruined, but never understood how. Author points to a loss of personal community, so now I think that the complaints are a result of Musk's deliberate bursting of filter bubbles, and are from people who preferred to keep their bubble.

McDonald's heavily discounts its items nowadays, but only through deals in their phone app. In my mind that makes the last few years of the Big Mac index unreliable.

edgineer··on The 'pay phone bandit' who baffled the FBI in the '80s
Maybe someone put gum/something to block return coins. Then as people used the machine, the return coins built up. Usually the thief would return days later and remove the gum, along with the coins behind it.
edgineer··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
When Assange went on Colbert he said WikiLeaks would release another video showing dozens of civilians being murdered.

I'm familiar with the video. Unfortunately, I don't see that WikiLeaks ever did publish that one.

edgineer··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
The first years of his persecution, according to the legal system of various countries, was for a sex crime.

He had sex in Sweden with a woman who consented to having sex, but not without a condom, and at some point he took off the condom.

As I remember, that led to England seeking his arrest to be extradited to Sweden for this sex crime. Since he was stuck in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Britain stationed officers outside it for years in case he stepped out. Ostensibly, for justice in this sex crime.

Everyone knew the real reasons were to extradite him to the US, but the US was totally silent on him, until minutes before the statue of limitations would have run out.

The US' charge was that Assange offered to run John the Ripper on a hash Bradley Manning gave him. Which, I mean, who among us have never run a hash in john the ripper?

It's been astounding to see such incongruity between the heft with which the US can use its muscle against a target, and the thin veil of weak crimes the legal systems would admit to investigating.

If Sweden, the UK, and the US would have been transparent that they were colluding to imprison him for publishing, I wouldn't have become so cynical.

edgineer··on Own a weather station? We want your data
What's the chances home weather stations have some bias in their signal (e.g. likely to be mounted on a hot roof) and that these data points get mixed into a larger corpus and someone ends up drawing incorrect conclusions from that corpus? Hopefully not high?
edgineer··on Ask HN: What would you do with $1M?
Most likely I'd have to give half to the IRS, then could barely afford a condo not too far from the city and and a used electric car with the rest. Or, since that seems barely worth it I'd seek out a financial advisor to invest it for me, then continue to rent and maintain my old car with slightly less worry about my future.

This is strange to hear. Model 3s are the cheapest used electric cars in my area, and with FSD included they look very tempting.

The only disadvantage I see compared to other electrics is the bad turning radius.

edgineer··on WD Releases New 6TB 2.5-Inch External Hard Drives – First Upgrade in Seven Years
I'm without 2.5Gbps+ networking and with less than 20TB of data, so went back to a single large drive (with two duplicates). Moving that much data would take days over 1Gbps ethernet (my "parity" is bit-by-bit drive comparison with freefilesync).

Each 20TB drive today is about $250 renewed. Even with 40TB I'd stick with six bare drives with four USB enclosures. I don't see how you'd get 40TB in a NAS, multiply by 3 for the backups, and upgrade to 2.5 or 10Gbps networking anywhere near your budget.
