edbloom··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
This is a perfect example of how fundamentally flawed modern SEO is. @ohashi has been producing the best hosting reviews in the WordPress ecosystem since forever. It seems like at some point in the past decade on page quality signals have been completely drowned out by backlink signals that can be easily amplified by bigger content producers and a resurgence in cheap on page SEO tricks.

Sorry Kevin I don't know what the answer is, but I'd thought I'd just say a huge thanks for the great work you do year after year. It might be VERY niche but perhaps some sort of annual premium membership for professionals in the WP ecosytem might be something that might work? I'd certainly be happy to support your work on an ongoing basis with access to niche "members only" performance reports on things like WooCommerce benchmarking tests etc.

edbloom··on New EU data blockage as German court would ban many cookie management providers
Very interesting. I see lots of hate to CMP's here in the comments (which as an EU consumer I totally get) but I have to ask, what's the alternative? CMP's seem like the least worst solution right now (I'm sure we can debate lots of potential better alternatives that could be baked into the browser - which is where I think this will eventually end up).

CookieBot are probably one of the better CMP's I've used, but I'm surprised they haven't yet implemented full EU isolation - which surely is the short term solution here. Fathom have written extensively about their work on EU isolation which I think is very relevant here https://usefathom.com/features/eu-isolation

edbloom··on Mailchimp to Sendy: Cutting Email Costs
Yes, but you've read Sendy is connected to SES right? So you're still getting the benefits of solid deliverability. Or are you saying SES deliverability is not as good as Mailchimp et. al?
edbloom··on Rails has won: The Elephant in the Room
Ah now that's a bit harsh. I thought it was pretty clear. Perhaps not getting to the point as quick as possible - but clear nevertheless.
edbloom··on Apple SVP of Design Jony Ive Removed from Leadership Webpage
It's very unlikely that page went live on apple.com as an error. I would imagine Apple control their public web presence very carefully. This will have the fan boys in an absolute tizzy if true. Perhaps he's just stepping down from a senior exec position?
edbloom··on Show HN: Bootstrap In Practice, my ebook for starters
I can't understand some of the comments here saying this is too expensive. Seriously folks, William has put together a great into to Bootstrap for a less than the price of a billable hour and it's too expensive? Sure all the information is out there - if you want to spend a few more billable hours finding it - plus a someone who is just now getting up to speed on Bootstrap - most of the tuts out there are for Bootstrap 2. I think the timing is right. The sample chapter is great. Williams product will hopefully save me many multiples of the purchase price by not wasting time seeking the right information and that is a point lots of people seem to be missing.
edbloom··on Government Digital Service Design Principles
I'm not connected with anyone who works on gov.uk but I've been a huge fan of what is going on over there for some time. In my view it is without a shadow of a doubt the best digital government team in the world. They've assembled a massively talented team who are knocking it out of the park week after week. It's rare to see this anywhere never mind a bloody government agency!

well done folks - you're leading the world!

edbloom··on Manchester City Council
couldn't disagree more. Underneath the "frosting" of the design surface of this site is one of the best user experiences I've had on a government website in a long long time. As someone who is in the middle of building out a large government site at the moment I'm keenly aware of how hard it must have been to bring the Manchester council team along with their design and ux decisions. For me this is the real triumph of this site.

Well done folks.

edbloom··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
this. I just started a new project in Foundation 3 for a public sector NFP that requires IE8 compatibility. Foundation 4 is pretty much not an option for me as a result. Guess I'm stuck with Foundation 3 for now.
edbloom··on Ditching responsive design
I'm sorry that's a big step backwards.

At a minimum you should have incorporated an adapative (which is what most people actually mean when they say responsive) grid like http://www.getskeleton.com/ into your redesign process.

Does it take a bit longer? Of course - but not much longer. Sounds like you're just copping out of investing the time to implement this stuff properly.

edbloom··on Google.ie DNS was hacked (now fixed)
well that can't be good! domain not due to expire until 21 March 2013 so looks like their dns records have been hijacked per the original submitter. A records are still going to google for me right now.
edbloom··on Show HN: Web startup security is failing and we're fixing it
Looking forward to seeing this. Was only thinking this vertical is ripe for someone to disrupt it with a more compelling service/price combo.
edbloom··on A Solution to the Twitter API Problem
I'm sure Twitter must have looked at the possibility of rolling out the kind of features Nova describes in his post. Anyone who works with the twitter API for any amount of time can recognise the potential for pushing Ads down the API pipe. I'm guessing they looked at it and the numbers didn't add up. Thinking about it there are lots of challenges with such a proposal. Top of the list would be control of the visual display of ads. Google maintain tight control of Adwords and Adsense. As does Facebook - and I'm sure they'll do so when they roll out their Adsense competitor. Taking it further there would be nothing to stop me from detecting ads which get sent down the pipes and not displaying them.

I think the Ad guys just see this is being too complicated and to be fair I suspect they might be right. I'm sorry to see Twitter going this way. Their open API was their major ace in the pack and now they seem hell bent on destroying it.

I also think they're smart enough to know they won't beat Facebook or Google in this closed silo world. I can only assume this is the next logical step in siloing off the product in an acquisition play - most likely by Apple within the next 12-18 months.

edbloom··on Why Big Monitoring Software Sucks
this.

I do a lot of work in Enterprise CMS land and Open Source land and you've essentially described my experiences working with ALL Enterprise CMS's I've used since the early 00's. I'm pretty convinced that within about 18 months Open Source CMS's will have negated any residual technical benefits that Enterprise platforms offer.

At this point the only competitive advantage Enterprise CMS vendors will have is their reputation and the "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" attitude and commercial support.

With many other businesses sprouting up to provide commercial support for open source platforms I can see many Enterprise vendors having to pull up their socks and shaking up how they sell and manage their platforms in the very near future.

edbloom··on Ask HN: How do you stay productive after work?
+ this. I find I'm FAR more productive if I get a decent run in straight after work (where I'm in a PM role) before then getting down to some coding in the evening.

You have to be disciplined though. On the days where I skip the run to get more coding done I invariably actually don't get more done as I have less energy.

Exercise is so so important.

edbloom··on John Gruber takes 'The Talk Show' to Mule Radio
yip - i listened to it again just now - while it is not uncommon for gruber to take like 3 mins to respond to questions on TTS I thought he was a bit hesitant with the "I guess so" - he must have known.
edbloom··on John Gruber takes 'The Talk Show' to Mule Radio
damn - that's a real shame. Listening to John and Dan shoot the breeze on any range of topics is/was one of the highlights of the week (podcast highlights anyway!). I'm assuming this wasn't a clean split given it was unannounced and given the T-Shirts which were printed for WWDC as announced on TTS90. I understand Dan and John have been good friends for a long time - hope this doesn't kill their friendship.
edbloom··on Rails 4 will establish a new background job queueing API
ahh ok - sounds good then! bravo and carry on!
edbloom··on Rails 4 will establish a new background job queueing API
interesting - not sure if it's really needed though - I've used Redis and Resque before and found it's performance was blisteringly fast. (Resque was made by Github https://github.com/blog/542-introducing-resque)
edbloom··on Demo of building for iPhone and Mobile Web from same HTML5 codebase
As someone who has only dabbled with Obj. C but has 10+ years of traditional web dev experience this looks v. attractive. What am I losing by not learning Obj.C/xcode to build native iOS apps?
edbloom··on Amazon CloudSearch - Start Searching in One Hour for Less Than $100 / Month
Very interesting. I have a project that I'm about to start which is going to have an index of 4 million plus data records where I need high performance faceted search. I was exploring using Solr but may now give this a look as I'm planning on putting the app on EC2. Are there any technical details/tutorials on how their facets are configured?
edbloom··on Posterous acquired by Twitter
this. At first glance I assumed "talent acquisition" but I was only thinking today (uncanny timing) that twitter really needs more content distribution channels to gain more mainstream usage. This together with the Summify acquisition point to the possibility that twitter is going to change it's content distribution model from pure streams of content to more curated, blog style channels. I think there's huge potential in this. Let's see what happens.
edbloom··on Sh*t… Twitter is exciting… again
I don't think Twitter is doomed - but I think they've been struggling to figure out their place in the world. I think this is starting to change now and would agree with many of the sentiments in the article - if not the hype re: it being bigger than Google - I couldn't see that happening in the short term anyway.

The other part of the problem people's views on Twitter/Facebook et al. is that your experiences on each network tend to be a reflection of how much effort you've put into getting the most out of each.

For example, for me, Twitter has FAR more value on a daily basis than Facebook. From my perspective, Facebook is a glorified flickr account. But that's just me. Meanwhile Twitter is my go to news source along with Hacker News. Market valuations wouldn't reflect my personal perspectives on each network!

Twitter needs to get MUCH better at helping users get the most out of their personal user experience on the network - otherwise it will never reach it's true potential.

edbloom··on Show HN (again): Web-based Link Checker with Blacklist Lookup
as someone who has a good bit of asp.net and nginx experience - i never thought of using nginx as a proxy for ASP.net running on mono/linux - cool setup dude!
edbloom··on Show HN (again): Web-based Link Checker with Blacklist Lookup
nice work! I see you're running nginx as your web server. Anymore details on the dev stack you used?
