ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What did you do when a employer rejected a raise?
FWIW, I always got my best 'raises' by switching jobs. Often times exponentially larger raises than I would have gotten sticking around.

A good company that values you will say yes to a raise. The fact that they say no means either a. they don't value you, or b. they can't afford to pay you fairly. Neither of those things is a good sign...

ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Apparently, I've been doing lat pull-downs the wrong way for like 20 years, using too much biceps instead of the lats. Took a trainer just a few minutes to correct me and I def feel the difference.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
A pair of Sennheiser Hd58x's from Drop. I never want to use ear buds again. Really loving the 'open back' experience, makes me feel less claustrophobic and the sound quality is amazing. Really enjoying just sitting around listening to music again.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Not tech related, other than using tech to promote it, but music. I tried a go at making a name for myself 10 years ago and failed. Now, I'm finally ready to write and record an album but I don't care if anyone listens to it. Just want to leave a tiny little piece of something to show I was here and made something.
ed_at_work··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
It's funny how our brains work, eh? I find I'm the complete opposite. I need two monitors so things are right there in my face. I get distracted switching tabs. Thanks a lot ADHD.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: I've decided to shut down my side project! What now?
Is it possible to refactor it to use AWS Lambda so it's only using the compute power it needs, rather than maintaining infra? Aka, "serverless"
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Am I Lazy?
Sounds like either depression, ADHD, or both ( depression from ADHD ). Talk to your doctor.
ed_at_work··on SPARCbook 3000ST: The coolest 90s laptop (2019)
Def brings me back. I remember being a young n00b hacker, running openwindows on slackware, wishing I had a real, live SPARCstation of my own.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What are the 3 biggest threats to our civilization?
Misinformation for one of them. Previous US elections, and now COVID, have highlighted how misinformation is both extremely potent/viral, and literally deadly.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What’s the fastest Linux OS for a slow computer?
Raspbian can run on a PC : https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/raspberry-pi-desktop/
ed_at_work··on How can an English teacher transition into web-development?
Code, code, code, and code some more. Learn the technologies and do tutorials, yes. But make your own stuff, and also learn the fundamentals. My company is having a hell of a time finding junior level people who actually know how to solve even the simplest of coding challenges. Try something like Codewars in your preferred language and get to figuring out how to actually think in code.
ed_at_work··on University of Wisconsin hospitals have blocked the Gab social media platform
I draw the line at "its a private organization, their network, and they can do whatever they want".
ed_at_work··on University of Wisconsin hospitals have blocked the Gab social media platform
So? What's wrong with not wanting hate speech and white supremacy on your network? They can do what they like, their network, their rules.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: It seems that I'm not a senior software engineer
Apply anyway. Most companies are scratching the bottom of the barrel right now for people. Those ads are always 'nice to haves'.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What finished/done/complete software do you use?
Microsoft Money. It's the "sunset edition". No updates anymore. Nothing comes close to it's cash flow forecast.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: How to make bootstrap look more professional
Clarity, from VMWare, is pretty "professional" looking https://clarity.design/documentation/get-started
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Did you work too hard in your 20s?
It took me a few job hunting attempts before I realized being honest was a bad idea. In the mean time, I fought hard and pushed my then boss to give me a substantial raise. I then left shortly thereafter ...
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Did you work too hard in your 20s?
Quite the opposite. I didn't take my career seriously enough in my 20's, didn't save retirement, and had to make up a lot of ground. Spent 10 years in a dead end job, being underpaid. It was hard even finding a new gig because people wondered why my salary was so low, and if it meant I sucked.

Took me about 2-4 years of job hopping to get up to a salary respectable for my level of experience.

ed_at_work··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal budget?
I've used MS Money and their "cash flow forecast" for just this style of budgeting for close to 20 years now. The software was discontinued 5 years ago. No app since has had as good a cash flow forecast. I admit it's a crutch at this point. So I'm going to have to build my own replacement.
ed_at_work··on Giant batteries and cheap solar power are shoving fossil fuels off the grid
So, that's cool and all. I love green tech. And I hate fossil fuels. Buuuuuuut, aren't we going to have the same issue with supplies of lithium that we are having with fossil fuels? Unless we have a dramatic shift in renewable battery tech, we're still painting ourselves into a corner with the giant battery trent.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?
If you like Indian, "Get Curried" has some amazing recipes : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChYpOn9tfcJkfjq7e0KaAhw
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Can you suggest educative react projects for newbies to make?
What's wrong with a todo app? I'm about to embark on making one, with React, so I can have a completely private, bespoke todo app that's tailored precisely to what I want and need.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: How did developers use to accept payment before Stripe?
It was painful. I'm mostly referring to legacy apps like online bill payment and stuff, especially ones that also wanted to do ACH transactions. You had to sign up with some sort of "payment gateway". Usually they had an api spec of XML or other legacy web services, file formats for interchange, etc that filled a whole binder. Since many people didn't want the compliance hassle of storing credit card & ach info, this was still 'easier' to implement.

Stripe pretty much came along and crapped on all of that ( in a good way ). And lowered the barrier to entry so indie dev shops could accept CC payments seamlessly as the other big megacorps.

ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What is your technical or business “never again” story?
Fine, I'll clarify : no "genius" is worth the money if they have a terrible EQ. Let them take their "genius" and terrorize somebody else.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: “Multi Page App” design/architecture/advice?
Eh? There's stacks upon stacks of books and web sites written about traditional MVC frameworks...
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What is your technical or business “never again” story?
he's not a "genius" if he also has a low EQ.
ed_at_work··on The Surprising Power of the Long Game
Seems like you're getting lost in the details, and missing the overall point they were trying to convey...
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a Senior Software Engineer?
Good luck finding a job, on the east coast at least, that will actually let you do this and not work you to death.
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Who here has built a profitable startup while keeping their day job?
Don't worry OP, your secret is safe with us
ed_at_work··on Ask HN: Who will need an email text classifier and why?
I actually need a semi-racist spam filter. I get about 10+ emails a day from recruiters from India. So unfortunately, I need to filter by Indian names....
