ealhad··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
wtf is this

the demo video really looks ai generated — several weird artifacts, but what bugs me the most is that at the end the alleged glasses-wearer goes through two men between whom clearly there is no space for a third person.

ealhad··on Show HN: Linux server management over SSH – written in Rust and Tauri
I mean yeah sure, I'll give SSH access to a blackbox. "Don't worry — the app is safe."
ealhad··on Ask HN: With all the AI hype, how are software engineers feeling?
As a software engineer: the only impact the AI bubble has on me is the time it takes to explain what's a stake to less tech-savvy colleagues. Zero consequences on my actual job, excepet being pissed of each time a promising project "pivots to AI" and starts shoehorning it everywhere.

As a person I'm increasingly worried about the consequences of people using it, and of what happens when the bubble bursts.

ealhad··on Show HN: Slint – A declarative UI toolkit for embedded and desktop
Neat!
ealhad··on Show HN: Slint – A declarative UI toolkit for embedded and desktop
This looks really neat, I played with it a bit and the DSL is well thought out.

One thing I can't figure though: how do we set default values for internal Struct?

Said default values are mentionned in the documentation (here: <https://slint.dev/releases/1.0.2/docs/slint/src/reference/ty...>).

  // ok even if a is missing, it will just have the default value
ealhad··on AI will save the world?
Do you know what this median annual household income of $71k means outside of the USA? Inequality is a global problem, unfortunately. Cheapest Tesla being generally affordable in one country doesn't mean it's not fairly expensive.

Side notes: - the World Inequality Database is full of interesting data (https://wid.world/) - I'm not sure the median income is always relevant (I mean, if half of a given population couldn't affort to eat correctly, I wouldn't say food is "generally affordable") - fortunately, not everybody needs a Tesla, let alone a car

ealhad··on AI will save the world?
What a load of utter bullshit.

"infinitely knowledgeable"? Bollocks. Big deep learning models work fine, and if you forget the part where big firms hoard loads of data without any kind of consent it's pretty cool tech. But that's not knowledge, and it has already been explained many times.

But my beef is more with the author's view of inequality.

So, bourgeoisie isn't stealing from the proletariat? How to describe a society when one percent gets more than half of all new wealth every year? [0]

Tesla are now ‘affordable’ cars? Hell, the cheapest model is twice my yearly income.

Can't say I'm struggling to understand how some people can think this way though. Can't say I'm happy about it either.

ealhad··on Michel de Montaigne
Well I had never heard of Woolf before the age of 25, so there's that.
ealhad··on Michel de Montaigne
Being French, I studied Montaigne in middle school (or high school, can't remember) – I did not expect to bump into him here. Quelle bonne surprise !
ealhad··on Fairbuds XL review: noise-cancelling headphones you can fix
Or the speakers themselves, eventually
ealhad··on Fairbuds XL review: noise-cancelling headphones you can fix
It's not a "sustainability tax", it's "acknowledging people are not slaves nor are resources infinite"
ealhad··on Python Dictionaries
Replying to the last sentence: the essay is also full of repetitions. I didn't make anything of it the first time I read it, but now the AI-generated hypothesis is on the table it seems quite likely.
ealhad··on Valve shows a drop in Linux gamers for march, but the numbers are questionable
I reckon this analysis would benefit from absolute figures. A drop in market share doesn't necessarily mean less users if said market is experiencing a massive growth.
ealhad··on Framasoft, We Develop PeerTube and Promote FLOSS from France: Ask Us Anything
The last post on PeerTube was apparently deemed interesting, so I thought a Framasoft AMA would be welcome.
ealhad··on PeerTube v5: the result of 5 years’ handcrafting
You're right, and Framasoft (the French non-profit behind the project) knows it. If you can help, or know people who can, I think they'd be glad to hear from you!
ealhad··on PeerTube v5: the result of 5 years’ handcrafting
Yup, it's that amazing.

That's why I think said institutions should donate to the project ;)

ealhad··on PeerTube v5: the result of 5 years’ handcrafting
PeerTube is a free, decentralised and federated video platform, and a part of the fediverse, meaning you can interact with it via Mastodon and other tools, thanks to the ActivityPub protocol.

There is only one paid developer, working for the French non-profit Framasoft – and I think it's important to share this in non French-speaking spaces.

ealhad··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
Nice. Any plans to make translations? I think it could be useful to a lot of people.
ealhad··on Pierre Cardin has died
Fun fact : in the French version of Back to the Future, Pierre Cardin is the alias Marty takes instead of Calvin Klein.

(and I only learned that yesterday, despite being French I have always watched this movie in English)

ealhad··on What everyone knows and what no one knows
Well, no, he asks "What can we say about `not A' and `not B'?"
ealhad··on What everyone knows and what no one knows
I don't understand.

If A implies B, then not B implies not A, and I'm pretty sure when I was in CS school in France (5 years ago) we learned this.

And I'm also pretty sure that I knew this before, though I can't exactly remember when I first learned it.

ealhad··on Simple kitten placeholder
Pointless code snippet to replace every image on a webpage by a kitten (it fails for very small images, because of dumb randomization)

  function randInt() {
    return Math.round (Math.random() * 20 - 10)
  }
  for (const img of document.getElementsByTagName('img')) {
    img.src = `https://placekitten.com/g/${randInt() + img.width}/${randInt() + img.height}`
  }
ealhad··on Type Systems Explained with Examples
In Rust, you have a Cow. It's smart and allows you to clone borrowed things, including things which can moo.
ealhad··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
I learned it in 2016, never went back. I trained with keybr[0] ~1 hour a day for a week, then went cold turkey (with a printed Colemak layout beside my screen), and after another week or so I was at 40wpm (that is, faster than I had ever been before).

It worked for me that way, doesn't mean it will for you. Two things to keep in mind : I wasn't a touch typist before, and I also had to learn all the symbols, coming from a French AZERTY layout.

ealhad··on Amazon restricts how rival device makers buy ads on its site
Just tried typing "browser" in the same Google search (using Firefox), it yields interesting results: I have Brave, Firefox, Firefox on Google Play, the Wikipedia article for browser, and not even one Chrome link.
ealhad··on Show HN: Notational Velocity for Vim
Thanks for pointing that out, I created an issue.
ealhad··on Should you be concerned about LastPass uploading your passwords to its server?
It's only standard according to its website though.
ealhad··on The Functional Style (2018)
OOP and FP are not orthogonal per se.
ealhad··on Ecosia – the search engine that plants trees
Both search and ads are from Bing.
ealhad··on Ecosia – the search engine that plants trees
About Ecosia, none. The ads are from Bing though, and they get user data.
