eYrKEC2··on Gentoo bugzilla closed due AI bot scraper overload
I don't really understand why there is resistance to in-browser Anubis-style gating using crypto mining for public sites like this.

You mine crypto and my free service remains cost-neutral. Yes, that transfers some of the cost to you, but it is marginal.

You want to bang on my servers with the fury of a thousand madmen, then I'll scale up the servers and you can pay the marginal cost of your access.

Or micropayments, of course, but hard to get normal users to sign up for micropayments. Micropayments could of course be the way to bypass the crypto mining gate.

eYrKEC2··on Newly retired couples may lose $16,900/year in Social Security in 2033
It's much worse than that.

Governments, when faced with shortfalls in the government pension, will absolutely nationalize your 401k or IRA.

YOU, while attempting to responsibly take care of yourself, will absolutely be a piggybank to be raided. This has happened in numerous countries.

You wouldn't want to be selfish, would you? Sure, you forgo the midlife crisis sports car in favor of the Toyota Corolla you've been driving for years, but that's just tough. Shoulda lived for the now.

eYrKEC2··on AMD will reinstate memory encryption on Ryzen 9000 CPUs via BIOS update in July
Does it run slower? I'd expect dedicated hardware to do that encryption/decryption, in which case there should be no difference.

Why not charge $1 to apply ? Would drastically filter down spam applications.
eYrKEC2··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
_tailwind_ was the full circle. We had individual controls. We went to semantic controls, then back to individual controls a la tailwind.
eYrKEC2··on I want to live like Costco people
The annual membership fee is about customer selection, for me.

What it buys for me is, "not Walmart People". Totally worth the investment.

eYrKEC2··on Monero Community Crowdfunding System
Right, because if we can trust centralized control, we can't trust anything. Bring on the social credit!
eYrKEC2··on Your Backpack Got Worse on Purpose
I tried to use the Teton 65L to ruck. Just put a 50 lbs bag of wheat in there.

Shoulder strap failed on insert to main pack after six 1-hour rucks . Got a replacement. Zipper failed at bottom on another one.

Wanted to increase load to 100 lbs, but gonna have to go with a different brand.

eYrKEC2··on Tesla has to pay historic $243M judgement over Autopilot crash, judge says
Right! We demand engineering perfection! No autopilot until we guarantee it will NEVER kill a soul. Don't worry that human drivers kill humans all the time. The rubric is not better than a human driver, it is an Angelic Driver. Perfection is what we demand.
eYrKEC2··on Farewell, Rust for web
I looove Rust for the backend.

I've supported backends in typescript, python, Java, and Rust.

Rust pages me the least at night. Sleep is beautiful.

eYrKEC2··on ai;dr

eYrKEC2··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
If the activities are distinct, dual boot. I do all my dev in linux and boot into windows for gaming.

Dev in linux is so much nicer for me than dev in Windows.

eYrKEC2··on What has Docker become?
My one experience with dev containers put me off of dev containers... but standard `docker compose` is just great for me.

I worked at a company where we were trying to test code with our product and, for a time, everyone on the team was given a mandate to go out and find X number of open source projects to test against, every week.

Independently, every member of the (small) team settled on only trying to test repos where you could do:

get clone repo && cd repo && docker compose up
Everything else was just a nightmare to boot up their environment in a reasonable amount of time.

eYrKEC2··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
The most effective ad blocker I've ever used. With that, it becomes better than chrome, in my opinion. Give it a spin, it's my daily driver for web dev as well ( just chrome debugger)
eYrKEC2··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
They're crushing it on ad-blocking. I love it for that reason.
eYrKEC2··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
Stackoverflow is like online gaming--lots of toxic people, but I still get value out of it. Ignore the toxic people, get your questions answered and go home to your family with your paycheck.
eYrKEC2··on Parental controls aren't for parents
I think the difference is that the parents of today are _you_. _They_ grew up with unrestricted internet access, because their parents didn't.

I think that pornography is poison and my parents didn't know that I had access to it. "Not my kid!", they said. But my generation says, "It's every. single. kid."

> Has anybody tried an alternative like teaching children about the actual dangers, how to recognize manipulation, etc?

Another poison is alcohol. Some people think that letting their kids access alcohol in their house is reasonable. I think it is better to wait until your brain is more developed before trying alcohol. First experiences with alcohol at a later age tends to enable people to have a less worse relationship with alcohol.

eYrKEC2··on Parental controls aren't for parents
To concur, the principle with guarding your children is the same as the principle of guarding your software systems.

Defense in depth. Multiple layers. Calender reminders to audit devices, usage, and look at router logs. Check in with your kids.

eYrKEC2··on Parental controls aren't for parents
Neutered smartphone with zero internet access and apps locked down like North Korea.

We also lock up our alcohol, as many parents have chosen to do for generations.

eYrKEC2··on Parental controls aren't for parents
That's essentially the rule in our house. No screens not visible to other members of the family.

In US, we restrict alcohol kids until they're 21. Pornography is poison.
