eYrKEC2··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
Brave, fork of Chrome. https://brave.com/

Ignore the crypto; enjoy the integrated ad-blocking.

Most seamless ad-blocking I've ever experienced.

eYrKEC2··on El Salvador's crypto experiment ends in failure
BTC _is_ the centralized alternative. It's a PUBLIC ledger and all the exchanges are following KYC.
eYrKEC2··on Bald eagles are thriving again after near extinction
A similar thing happens in Greece where if antiquities are found on your property , you want to properly bury it immediately or risk going bankrupt on your building project. Not sure on the details, but this is what my Greek boss told me once.
eYrKEC2··on Cot: The Rust web framework for lazy developers
Absolutely. That inclination exists everywhere.

Imagine if your framework said,"let a thousand flowers bloom."

eYrKEC2··on Cot: The Rust web framework for lazy developers
Opinionated frameworks are very useful. They create well-worn paths that others have tried before.

Every python flask environment I've ever seen has been a bespoke configuration with some selection of the massive combinatoric space that flask presents to folks.

Contrast that with python Django or Ruby on Rails where opinions abound, but you can escape the well worn path if you _need_ to.

eYrKEC2··on Microsoft Service Status page is down
You're on that page right now!
eYrKEC2··on My little sister's use of ChatGPT for homework is heartbreaking
Why does this 6th grader have math homework? Finns have less time in school every day and they still do better than Americans.
eYrKEC2··on Stripe V2
Yeah. First you limit the depth of recursion.

Then you limit which objects can nest which other objects, under which circumstances..

Pretty soon -- you have a proscribed set of shapes that you allow... and you've converged on the same solution as achieved in the other direction by the REST API requiring explicit data shape inclusion from the caller.

eYrKEC2··on Stripe V2
I think it's the flexible middle-ground that REST APIs and GraphQL APIs converge on. GraphQL APIs that are completely open are trivially DOS'd with recursive data loops or deeply nested over-fetching requests and hence need to be restricted down to acceptable shapes -- thus converging on essentially the same solution from the opposite direction when constructing a GraphQL API.
eYrKEC2··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
Brave. It's Chrime with builtin ad blocking.
eYrKEC2··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
They don't like the politics of Brenden Eich.

As Lenin would say, "Who? Whom?"

eYrKEC2··on Intel announces retirement of Pat Gelsinger
TSMC handles AMD chips and NVidia chips. Why do you think Intel needs a special fab _for_ GPUs? It's the same lithography process.
eYrKEC2··on Stop making me memorize the borrow checker
It's a high level language with algebraic data types and fantastic type checking. I'll use it where ever I darn well please.
eYrKEC2··on Security Is a Useless Controls Problem
Security is always an economic activity too. The crash engrs at Ford could demand 30 mph speed governers, quarter inch steel plates, 5 point harnesses, and helmets, but people need a car that costs less than $200k and gets more than 2 miles per gallon.

Sometimes security requirements _are_ too onerous.

eYrKEC2··on Ask HN: How to deal with a serious mental health breakdown?
If he's suicidal, he could become homicidal. The first time my family experienced a manic psychological break from a cousin we just stayed in the house with him after a brief psych hospital stay. He then had some sort of further hallucinatory break and he was racing around the house -- literally like a mad man... very heart breaking... We called the cops and had him committed as we really could not take care of him at all and him running around like a crazy man could get _him_ shot by the cops. After he got help, was diagnosed bipolar, and was on his meds, he told us what his hallucinations were and the story in his head was that we were threatening his family -- that will turn most men homicidal, so we were very lucky.
eYrKEC2··on Ask HN: How to deal with a serious mental health breakdown?
Stresses can push someone over the edge too. We did just have a US Presidential election.
eYrKEC2··on Only 5.3% of US welders are women. After years as a professor, I became one
That theory does make sense. Half of serial killers have had traumatic brain injuries -- this would just be more of the same.
eYrKEC2··on We're Leaving Kubernetes
Have folks seen success with https://earthly.dev/ as a tool in their dev cycle?
eYrKEC2··on Rewrite It in Rails
If you don't like being paged at night, then Rust for CRUD apps is fantastic -- having worked with Python, c#, and nodejs backends, I'll take Rust backends every day of the week.
eYrKEC2··on Why does everyone run ancient Postgres versions?
Not after you have to google, "What's the equivalent of `show tables` in postgres?", because the psql command names are completely arbitrary.
eYrKEC2··on The science of "Zoom fatigue"
It's easier to read people with video. If you don't know someone that well, you can't pick up as many cues with just voice.
eYrKEC2··on I stopped the RSI pain that almost destroyed my programming career (2016)
A have a friend that is an electrician. He's now in his 40's and was having pain from being in the construction industry since he was 18.

He snagged a sauna that a customer was throwing away. He does it in the evenings after work and now he wakes up pain free.

Kinda goes with the article's idea of blood flow sometimes being the cause of pain.

eYrKEC2··on Windows 10 begins one-year countdown to end of support
Dual boot today! Escape to Windows if/when you need, then reboot back into linux. Been doing that for 10 years and I only boot back into windows for gaming.
eYrKEC2··on Windows 10 begins one-year countdown to end of support
Just dual-boot. Run whatever hellscape of windows is current when you want to game, and run Ubuntu (or whatever) the rest of the time.

Been doing that for 10 years.

eYrKEC2··on In Defense of LeetCode Interviews
They're illegal, unless you're the government or... NFL, surprisingly.. "wonderlic"
eYrKEC2··on In Defense of LeetCode Interviews
It doesn't matter. It's a heuristic. _vocabulary_ test performance correlates with IQ and vocabulary is _only_ a test of something you know.
eYrKEC2··on Ask HN: What book had a big impact on you as a child or teenager?
The Everlasting Man, by G.K. Chesterton.
eYrKEC2··on Gorhill pulls uBlock Origin Lite from Firefox store
The replacement is Brave browser https://brave.com/. Skip the crypto. Enjoy the integrated ad blocking.
eYrKEC2··on Dumped orange peel transformed a barren pasture (2017)
Yes, modern pesticides degrade. Farmers keep very detailed spray records and fields have essentially "lock out, tag out" times after certain spray applications. Other sprays can't be applied X number of days before harvest, because the application's degradation isn't complete. After harvest, produce who's skin is consumed, like apples, go through a "drencher" and later "dump tank", to perform more washing of the produce's skin.
eYrKEC2··on CS Career fair cancelled at community college because no companies reached out
Bingo. A BS is a great filter for hard working and higher IQ.

Guess who does really really good in sales? People who play varsity or college sports. Is it a rule? Nope. Is it a great heuristic? Yep. Does football teach you sales? Not really... but it does filter for certain traits, one of which is probably pure animal magnetism and the base desire of humans to be influenced bt the most fit individual.
