e7mac··on ‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ Say Some Computer Science Students
This Weird Al song captures this perfectly - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyV_UG60dD4
e7mac··on Ask HN: What's the best way for an engineer to pick up basic finance knowledge?
Professional finance. Trying to understand what all the terms like hedge fund, financial instruments etc. mean.
e7mac··on The Software Revolution
This is a typical greedy algorithm train of thought. Ignoring long term issues in favor of immediate short term feel-good solutions. How you can bring up Indian road maintenance methods as a standard bearer for good / positive policy is beyond me. This just leads to roads not getting fixed and the laborers stretching out the repair "job" as long as possible, which in most cases, is a very long time. By using these terrible and inefficient methods, the nation as a whole suffers, including the laborers. Of course, that loss is not immediately observable, and hence gets brushed under the carpet. If instead, the resources that are wasted on inefficiencies ends up channeled better, maybe not this exact generation, but hopefully the next generation of the same economic class could have a better shot at education and/or a better life.

Your line "I hear these objections, but I still stand by my assertion" reminds me of the saying (translated to English) - "100 out of 80 (sic) people are cheats, yet my India is great"

Nice post! Support your 52 week challenge!
e7mac··on Ask HN: List of words – List of regexes tool?
True. I was thinking about a tool that would give you a list of regexes, ranked by some factor that aims to get at the regex pattern that'll be useful. For example, if I gave it, [name@email.com, name2@something.com] it would give all kinds of regex patterns, but ideally point to [a-z]@[a-z].com
e7mac··on Show HN: Stressed and burned out, so I created my first app – Remember Win
hey! good point - I felt the same so amy trying to create a template website that would make polished app pages easy for mobile developers! hope to share the beta with you soon!
e7mac··on Music 'hackers' unleash new generation of instruments
Jeez that's such a confusing name to pick. NIME (http://www.nime.org/) is an annual conference in music tech!
e7mac··on Music 'hackers' unleash new generation of instruments
One of my professors had once told me that the people handling cutting edge technology in every era were inevitably into music, and that's why music tech has always sat at the cutting edge of tech. Still remember that, 2 years on!

creativemarket.com .. do you know any better sources?
e7mac··on Ask HN: Is making one-page websites for apps a pain?
Thanks for the thoughts. I keep using various hybrids of the 3 that you mentioned and it's been getting annoying. I'm going to try and see if I can maybe build a tool that could ease this process.

Thanks! Just checked out Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble. Surprising that it hasn't got an iOS version yet!

Hey HN would love to hear your take on the approach to auto-scroll. I'm not sure why the other implementations don't use the natural scrolling gesture as the means to set the auto-scroll speed so I decided to build it and show it to the community myself. Eager to hear what people think!
e7mac··on An analysis of Lionel Messi
Your thinking that 'the effort needs to ring the bell or it doesn't count' is a little short sighted in my opinion. It'd be easy to make the scores higher if that was the big need of football. They could just make the goals larger. Sport is a fun mix of probabilities. The fact that goals are hard to score means that each goal is therefore valued higher, and celebrated a lot more. Do you experience the same thrill watching a goal in football vs a normal 2-pointer in basketball? Definitely not. In addition, goals being a rare event means that the underdogs have a higher chance of victory. If the scores were easy to make, the better team would much more frequently score and therefore win. Since goals are rare, with a combination of one lucky moment and some heroics from your keeper/ the better opponent having a bad day, underdogs frequently win the game- which makes it exciting for all kinds of fans. As for leaving games on in the background - it's a lot more to do with personal preference than the absolute value of the sport. I watch all 90 mins of soccer but frequently leave american football on in the background as it has so many breaks.
e7mac··on World debt clock
I wonder who the world is in debt to and if words like global debt crisis are used to foster a sense of impending doom in people cuz it lets governments control them better?
e7mac··on 3D GIFs Created with a Simple Visual Effect
Yeah, and very much so in email. <video> gets stripped in most web email clients. However, you can embed gifs and they work great. I made a fun service: flukyGifs - gifs that change every time you visit it (based on keywords). Add a fun one to your email signature, and there's something to look forward to every time someone opens your email! Here's a link http://flukygif.herokuapp.com

I wish the people who hated "techie scum" made a stand against tech by not using our products, to begin with. It's very hypocritical to be running that campaign on the internet. Of course, it could be high nosed irony.
e7mac··on Introduction to Guitar
For musicians who can read music and have to spend time organizing their sheet music etc, check out http://woodshed.e7mac.com - a tool I built for myself that has saved me a tremendous amount of time. The goal was to put everything you need for a practice session i.e.metronome, sheet music, spotify play for original - on a single page.
