e40··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
When I updated my Homepods to 26.5.2 I wasted 4 hours trying to get them back online. It was a complete nightmare. I never really figured out why it was so hard. I just kept getting errors and if I didn't keep trying they would have been as good as bricks.

So, I 100% agree with you.

Yeah, I miss him, too. I think about how he died alone. What a terrible thing.
e40··on John C. Dvorak has died
Around the time of his ascent in comp.lang.lisp is when I stopped reading it. It was just flame wars, and I think he had a good bit of the responsibility.

Seeing his dual personalities was the first time I experienced this. It didn't bode well, that's for sure.

e40··on John C. Dvorak has died
So many people who have big personalities on the internet are like that. My example is Erik Naggum. I spent a lot of time with him and the gulf between his in-person and on-line personas was vast.

Trivia: I took both the pics of him on his wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Naggum

e40··on Most Americans say "not in my backyard" to AI data centers
> I think this is because the demand is so extreme for datacenters now

Point to _any_ analysis that says the current building boom is anything but speculation.

xAI is renting out their DC space. I think I read that Google is, too.

DC buildout is purely a gold rush. A play to be the one left standing after all the weaker players die.

People like that are never friends. It’s a relationship of convenience and power exchange. The public riff was because Elon got upset over something and threw a tantrum.

Some think the index deal was in exchange for Elon helping fund the midterm battle. Scott Galloway, for example.

Very smart and experienced at extracting value for the partners, even if it means leaving a husk behind.

e40··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
I've known pretty far right people that are empathetic. That doesn't matter, given what they support, though. I think you're focusing on the wrong thing.

And given the party Daniel supports, saying he doesn't want a monoculture... it seems like you are being naive. There are lots and lots of right-wing people in the USA that over the years never said far right things... but their actions have shown a different story.

I think you need to judge Daniel on his actions, not his words or your gut.

e40··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Who sees the party as left wing? Its seems like a disingenuous argument to make.

e40··on The best response to AI slop and online noise is from Robin Williams
Not going to downvote you, but you missed the point of Roy Batty and his speech. Roy’s mind was indistinguishable from humans, and that’s why he was feared by humans and was given an artificially short lifespan. And the quote you referenced proves his humanity.
e40··on Data centers trigger voter backlash
I don't think so. Look at these numbers:

  | Year | Capacity (GW) | Construction Spending |
  | 2015 | 0.2 – 0.3 GW | $1.8 Billion |
  | 2016 | 0.3 – 0.4 GW | $2.2 Billion |
  | 2017 | 0.4 – 0.5 GW | $3.1 Billion |
  | 2018 | 0.5 – 0.6 GW | $4.5 Billion |
  | 2019 | 0.6 – 0.7 GW | $6.2 Billion |
  | 2020 | 0.8 – 1.0 GW | $8.0 Billion |
  | 2021 | 1.2 – 1.5 GW | $10.0 Billion |
  | 2022 | 2.0 – 2.5 GW | $15.0 Billion |
  | 2023 | 3.5 – 4.0 GW | $20.0 Billion |
  | 2024 | 6.4 GW | $35.0 Billion |
  | 2025 | 8.5 GW | $46.0 Billion |
  | 2026 | 13.6 GW | $50.7 Billion |
2026 figures represent full-year capacity projections and annualized construction spending rates.

There is absolutely no way that increase was planned due to precisely planned for capacity. It's speculation.

e40··on Data centers trigger voter backlash
What the comments fail to point out (and I haven't read the article to find out if they address it): the number of data centers being built is based on speculation of need and is a dramatic over-estimate. It has to be. What, other than AI has happened in the last few years that would warrant that many new data centers? How do they know there will be customers for that capacity? There will not be advances in algorithms, etc that do AI much more efficiently? (We know China is making strides in that!)

It's complete speculation! It's the new gold rush and everyone wants a data center. Most of these data centers might not even be built! And the ones that are, might never make any profit.

e40··on Data centers trigger voter backlash
