e40··on Show HN: FnScribe – Open-source, offline dictation for macOS
Are you aware of Spokenly? It has a local mode that uses Apple’s built in services. I bind it to right command and use it frequently for hard to spell words.
e40··on FDA approves first in class targeted therapy for metastatic pancreatic cancer
Sorry for your loss. My best friend died 3 months after diagnosis from pancreatic cancer.
e40··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
After having blamed immigrants for many of our problems. It fits nicely in their strategy.
e40··on Bill Gates: The turbulent AI era is here
The GOP stance on abortion is about capturing the religious voters, which is far more important to them than anything else.
e40··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
The backend company many financial institutions use to verify a person’s identity has details of my life mixed up with my son’s. When I do verification I have to be mindful of this, and often have to call him to make sure I don’t fail. There is no one to call. It’ll be like this forever.
e40··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
Isn’t that how we got here? Making fun and ridiculing the low status, dumb people said “fuck you” with their vote for him, twice.
e40··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
They speak that way because they are.
e40··on Splitting a Git Commit
No mention of Magit?
e40··on CEO who fired 900 people on Zoom just before Christmas wants his job back
> so how exactly do you lay off people except remotely?

You have their managers do it. Privately. 500 people at once is just lazy and hateful.

e40··on Every exterior shot in The Taking of Pelham 123
One of the best action movies of that era, the 1970s. The actors are all first rate. Here's the IMDB link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072251/ for those interested.

I grew up on Walter Matthau movies. He was such an unlikely action hero, but I loved watching him.

e40··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
I know a vegan who’s been doing it for 45 years. That I know of.
e40··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
By definition vegans don’t eat dairy.

Fake meat is just tofu with preparation.

e40··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
You are both right.
e40··on Civilians under siege by Mexican cartel fight back with AK-47s, grenades
There have been many examples of non-corrupt officials being elected and then killed.

The corruption isn't always "I want to get rich" type, sometimes it's "I don't want to be murdered in a horrific way" type.

e40··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
I see it as a game where investors get a better deal than the founders wanted. There is a lot of innuendo on the "we're not really interested, unless there's more upside for us" and the founders are then under pressure to up forecasts.

I think the investors believe the business is sound. It's just a way to get it for a better price.

Of course, if the business is a unicorn, none of this applies.

e40··on Two wheels, a few tradeoffs, and gas prices
Rode one for 5 years in my 20s and sold it after 2 close calls. Kawasaki Ninja 550 and then 750. The 750 had a scary amount of power.

I consider myself lucky that I didn’t have a serious accident.

e40··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
IME, it's about pushing you to overextend on the forecast, so that when you don't meet it, they get more control or claw back funds promised or given.

Fudging actual numbers is a dangerous and illegal game to play and never pays off, except in the edge cases (e.g., Enron... but usually you have to pay the Piper).

e40··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
I had no idea the idea was so old!
e40··on Canada adds 75,000 new jobs in July, unemployment rate lowest in 2 years
Not Canadian. Real question: is this the impact of having a normal human at the helm?
e40··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
Following a route through a tunnel (less than a mile long), Google Maps on iOS zooms forward on the route many stops and many miles (5+ miles) in the tunnel. I had assumes Apple Maps was worse, but to my surprise it's quite good and doesn't have this bug.
e40··on Civilians under siege by Mexican cartel fight back with AK-47s, grenades
What choice do they have?

This is not your usual vigilante group. This is a reaction to an overwhelming force of criminal gangs killing citizens and the government being powerless to stop them.

e40··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
You moved the goalpost. You said they are clean as could be. While temporary, sure, it was a horrific situation for the nearby residents.
e40··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
> Datacenter is like the cleanest and most ecofriendly business you can imagine.

Tell that to the residents of Memphis.

e40··on Why has the display control panel pointer truncation bug gone unfixed for long?
My guess: technical debt makes fixing it impossible. I can’t believe many Microsoft developers didn’t try to fix it.
e40··on Sam Altman is now talking to the White House about decelerating AI
Losing the race? Get your political buddies to help “level” the playing field!
e40··on Disrupting supply chain attacks on NPM and GitHub Actions
> Sorry, if you are unwilling to take 10 minutes to learn how to sign your code, you have no business maintaining software releases millions of people depend on. Full stop.

The crux of the problem is right here.

e40··on The Productivity Mirage
3rd paragraph
e40··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
Yep, me, too. My reddit usage went down 10x (maybe more) after Apollo was killed. Probably a good thing, in retrospect.
e40··on The Fabled Flatbreads of Uzbekistan (2015)
Thanks, will try!
e40··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
When I updated my Homepods to 26.5.2 I wasted 4 hours trying to get them back online. It was a complete nightmare. I never really figured out why it was so hard. I just kept getting errors and if I didn't keep trying they would have been as good as bricks.

So, I 100% agree with you.
