Just continue to ask yourself that question each year
dzamo_norton··on TSV Utilities: Command line tools for large, tabular data files
> With respect, who actually feels at home with SQL?

So many data analysts that each time a new analytical database engine comes out it needs to support SQL or something like it to get any mindshare.

dzamo_norton··on Moscow's blockchain voting system cracked a month before election
How can a blockchain-based voting system be a good idea if it invites an attacker who can afford lots of ASICs, e.g. a hostile nation who like to interfere, to launch a 51% attack?
dzamo_norton··on Is Firefox better than Chrome? It comes down to privacy
I guess some good soul could maintain and host a "Firefox Lite" config file that disables all these unwanted extras so that the work is done once.
dzamo_norton··on Forget monoliths vs. microservices: cognitive load is what matters
Is there some research you can point out that establishes cases where a lower IQ has been advantageous?
dzamo_norton··on Is Firefox better than Chrome? It comes down to privacy
Yes I think you're on the right track. It must be some lurking network misconfiguration. Firefox itself is not broken in this way in my experience (which is not short).
dzamo_norton··on Microsoft is going to ship a full Linux kernel in Windows 10
Gonna be a big download.

And perhaps it's ontologies like these that you get if you do go with emergence

dzamo_norton··on Golden: Mapping human knowledge
Should we be thinking of Wikipedia alone, or Wikipedia plus all of the fan and other wikis that have sprung up around it? When you consider the collection of all of them there isn't much of a notability restriction and cardinality takes a jump forward too. Of course the collection of them doesn't get you an ontology carefully elaborated by a single mastermind, you just get whatever emerges from this decentralised web.

dzamo_norton··on The Game Engine Black Book: Doom
If the author signed an exclusivity agreement with Amazon then he'd be in breach and Amazon could seek penalties. Otherwise he would not be in breach and Amazon should expect him to use other distribution channels as the fancy takes him. That's about the extent to which ethics enters into it, as far as I can see.
dzamo_norton··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Quiet often it's add-ons that are are at fault, e.g. the Lighnting calendar add-on can significantly extend launch time. Starting TB in safe mode will reveal if this is the case.

dzamo_norton··on Show HN: Ultimate Plumber – a tool for writing Linux pipes with live preview
Using btrfs on Linux I have a job that takes a CoW snapshot of the whole filesystem every 10 minutes just so that I can undo whoopsies. I don't retain all of these snapshots, only the most recent one.

He or she is saying that he's a personification of the well-known and sometimes-accurate manager cliché that engineers love to hate. Think pointy-haired boss in Dilbert. It's become an abstraction that people use for conversing, including for laughing, so it doesn't go away when you say "I know many contemporary counterexamples".

dzamo_norton··on User-defined Order in SQL
No, this query doesn't retrieve the items in the correct order in general. It only works for the particular data in GP because the row ordering coincides with the user's ordering there. Try ordering by `prev` on the table below, which is a different valid representation of "steal underpants" -> "???" -> "profit".

  id | text | prev | next
   1 | "profit" | 2 | NULL
   2 | "???" | 3 | 1
   3 | "steal underpants" | NULL | 2

dzamo_norton··on Signal Foundation
> most gmail users never see messages from my personal email address, because google routes them to spam despite my IP never having spammed

This is off topic but very briefly: implement SPF and DKIM and get a number of Gmail users (I'm not sure what this number is, but it is order of magnitude 10) to mark your emails as "Not Spam". Eventually Gmail will come to accept emails from your self-hosted server.

dzamo_norton··on WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton to leave company
You're not seeing it. It is, to some or other partial-but-very-noticeable extent, a Skype killer, an SMS killer, a GSM/CDMA voice call killer, an email killer, a Hangouts killer, a Facebook killer (yes i know they bought it), [insert many others here]. Communications are very important, this app is a beast. The voice calls work perfectly for me.
dzamo_norton··on WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton to leave company
I don't think that the technical scope of the software or the company behind it were what was being measured against the notion of a "fairytale startup" by the parent, or the grandparent. They spoke of "greenfield tech", "mind-boggling earn out", "10 000 millionaires" but the product didn't have to be an entire operating system. A game could be a fairytale startup then. Flappy Bird would have done it for me
dzamo_norton··on Facebook recruiting and Unix systems
> The recruiter did in fact know exactly what the difference was and he was obstructing the candidate.

For a little while I was basically convinced of deliberate obstruction - no sane person would use the arguments employed by the recruiter. But, on reading through from the top once more, the recruiter was actually initially helpful and I have settled on "incompetence, not malice". Almost settled, at least.

dzamo_norton··on 200 terabyte proof demonstrates the potential of brute force math
There's a point there that is obscured by the overreach to "romance novel": it's because it's a one-page encyclopedia article on a highly-technical and esoteric subject not a 300-page introductory textbook to be studied over the course of a year.

Then again "If someone cannot explain something in plain English, then we should question whether they really do themselves understand what they profess." - Richard Feynmann

dzamo_norton··on Pixels Don’t Care (2013)
The author feels that his height counted against him, but did anyone actually say "sorry you're too short?". It would be strange client or employer who insisted on a tall developer while age I can accept is a factor for people out there, rightly or wrongly. I'm suggesting that it could be possible to project an inherent sensitivity about one's height onto a separate experience.
