dylanz··on Show HN: Bear – Minimal blogging platform
This is great. Is there a way to export your data? This would be the only thing stopping me from using the service.
dylanz··on John Carmack is reading and contributing to OpenBSD source code
I share your excitement! I've never contributed to OpenBSD but have been running and following the distro for ages. I have a few mugs and t-shirts and support when I can. I'm hoping this may bring some fans of his over to the distro who wouldn't have run into (or contributed to) it before.
dylanz··on Next dream job can be in an HTTP header
A perfect "be sure to drink your Ovaltine" moment! If anyone is unfamiliar, it refers to the movie "A Christmas Story". The moment here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdA__2tKoIU

I first saw that movie a only a couple years ago and quickly realized how many pop culture references come from it. It does such a good job of capturing a period of time in North America. Even before I saw the movie, eating out at a Chinese restaurant was a thing for me and my family. I had no idea it may have been related! Also... one day I'll own that lamp.

dylanz··on Snow Crash: HBO Max adaptation of Neal Stephenson's 1992 cyberpunk novel
The first book I ever read from Neal was Cryptonomicon and I absolutely LOVED it. I think I heard about Van Eck phreaking at some point, heard it was in the book, and was intrigued. I read Snow Crash after and was blown away. It's so different from Cryptonomicon but the tangents are fantastic.

When I think about all the books I've read in my lifetime, Snow Crash has given me the coolest and most fun mental images out of all books. I'm 40+ years old, and when I'm stuck in traffic, I still think about latching on to cars in front of me and escaping the grid I'm sitting in.

dylanz··on The Invention of the AeroPress (2014)
I'm in the same boat and I roll with a Chemex at home.
dylanz··on People are planting more vegetable gardens
I received my Permaculture Design Certificate from Bill Mollison, my Permaculture for Aid Workers from Geoff Lawton, designed two properties, both included food forests, and I also like long walks on the beach and sushi. WHO’S HIRING APRIL 2020. Joke aside, gardens not only provide food, I’ve found they act as an anti-depressant and are quite fun to build.

One principle of Permaculture is to optimize space to provide for human needs. I feel like the HN community could come up with some cool shit in this space.

dylanz··on Disney CEO Bob Iger immediately steps down from CEO position
I'm halfway into that audio book (which is self-narrated) and so far it's been great. Point #2 is definitely a theme. He seemed to truly care about what impact his actions would have on his employees and consumers.
dylanz··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file
Yes! I think this would be definitely boost motivation. It would also help me to look at things "before" any positive outcome and remind me not to go... back to there.
dylanz··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file
I don't care about analyzing the data afterwards. When I open the notebook and see that I've only had one glass of water, it motivates me to drink another, until I get around 8 in one day.

I've read https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2012/03/the-personal-ana..., have used Seinfeld calendar apps, and bought productivity tools... all with no luck.

I have an addictive personality so I could easily sit in front of the computer and write code for days on end and not take care of myself. This little physical book and pen is the only thing that's brought me back to reality and kept me on track!

dylanz··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file
I just started writing key metrics of mine in a small physical notebook every day. I write tally marks for each glass of water I drink, jot down any supplements I take, and also track the weight of dumbbells/plates I lift that day. I also use it to track any big TODO's.

I've tried all of these things digitally but I've never had the follow-through as with paper.

dylanz··on Santa Cruz decriminalizes psychedelic mushrooms
There are many, many, legal drugs that people currently get DUI's for that do not have sobriety field tests (I'm looking at you mom).
dylanz··on TLDR pages: Simplified, community-driven man pages
+1 ... we should be working on improving "the actual" man pages. There is an "Examples" section in OpenBSD man pages that help out quite a bit. I'd rather have one definitive place for man pages (rather than many), and I'd rather have them be accessible from the OS (and not require an internet connection).
dylanz··on First Case of New Coronavirus Detected in U.S.
"Eschew flamebait. Don't introduce flamewar topics unless you have something genuinely new to say. Avoid unrelated controversies and generic tangents." and "Be kind. Don't be snarky. Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine."
dylanz··on Scientists Use Recycled Sewage Water to Grow 500-Acre Forest in the Desert
It's amazing what they accomplished in such an arid location with minimal input. I worked on Geoff's farm in Australia and it's also a very impressive project!
dylanz··on Fast
Definitely! That would be very cool to see. I bet there are a lot of great things that have moved slowly with great success. Berkshire Hathaway is probably a good example, although I don't know how it compares to other companies during a similar window of time.
dylanz··on Amazon RDS Proxy for AWS Lambda
This is awesome. We were just looking at throwing up PgBouncer in front of RDS in the coming year. Looking forward to PostgreSQL support!
dylanz··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
I 80% understand what this company is doing, but I 100% know that this team is awesome. I'm very much looking forward to more news and progress as it happens.
dylanz··on Tesla Cybertruck
Hahaha... probably. I think it actually made the thing look a lot more bad-ass while he gave the rest of the presentation. I own a Tacoma (and have owned a few) and I've had my truck broken into quite often. Some places you don't even want to park because they're hot spots for getting your windows broken into (I'm looking at you Lombard Street). This will be a bit of a deterrent to thieves which is nice.
dylanz··on We do not use foreign keys (2016)
Application vs Integration databases: https://martinfowler.com/bliki/IntegrationDatabase.html. If you're going to have one application writing to your database, having your constraints live in your application is definitely a viable option.
dylanz··on The Uncertain Fate of Amsterdam’s Red-Light District
Exactly. There will always be people doing drugs and paying for sex. I think Amsterdam is in a unique position to try and come up with ways to make this all work. It's definitely new ground, and won't be an easy task to say the least!
dylanz··on 600k concurrent websocket connections on AWS using Node.js (2015)
Could you explain or post a link to something about #2? I’ve never heard of that before!
dylanz··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
If you have a Blizzard account and want to cancel your account, you can do that here: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/2659
dylanz··on Zelda Games on the Philips CD-i
Which was just released today and is currently being downloaded at my house.
dylanz··on Using Deep Learning to Inform Differential Diagnoses of Skin Diseases
This is definitely on my list in a few months if the diet changes I'm making haven't helped (I'm trying to stay in Ketosis for a few months). I studied Chinese martial arts for most of my life so some TCM treatments have worked for other things in my past.
dylanz··on Using Deep Learning to Inform Differential Diagnoses of Skin Diseases
That's all great advice, and ugh... sorry about the GVHD. Light therapy is definitely on my list and great point about setting up a Google News alert. Thank you for the comment!
dylanz··on Using Deep Learning to Inform Differential Diagnoses of Skin Diseases
This is great to see, and I didn’t know that there was a shortage or dermatologists. Just a few months ago my entire body got all blotchy and I ended up having to go to a dermatologist to get a biopsy. It ended up being full body Granuloma Annulare which is both rare an incurable. With no other options, I’ll be trying to cure it with diet.

That said, it couldn’t be diagnosed by sight alone. It looked very similar to many other skin diseases, and mine in particular comes in many different forms. I’ll obviously be following this research!

dylanz··on Sunsetting Mercurial Support in Bitbucket
I remember playing pool with Chris Wanstrath back in the day and he was telling me how he just started a product based on Git. I told him to bail on it and use Mercurial instead! I listed a bunch of reasons why I thought it was the best distributed VCS. I remember shaking my head a bit thinking: "Whelp... good luck with that". I probably lost that game of pool too.
dylanz··on Escape rooms are big business
I agree on the Myst comment. I think if there was more tech involved and a little “magic” after the solving of each puzzle, it would be a bit more fun. That said, watch how much you drink. My friend and I went into one in Denver pretty hammered and ended up both sitting down and falling asleep! The employee came in and woke us up after a little bit. We somehow still ended up escaping with less than a minute left.
dylanz··on Sleep trackers can make insomnia worse
Accurate. I used to go to the gym and lift weights 6 days a week regularly, slept fine. I just took two months off and didn’t exercise at all. I hopped back into my gym routine again this week and besides being extremely sore (which can happen ever if you only take a week off), I can barely fall asleep and the quality of sleep is horrible. I’ve read that it’s common among bodybuilders who train too hard. It may be a a shock to the central nervous system (heavy compounds like deadlifts can do that).
dylanz··on You probably don’t need ReCAPTCHA
They are definitely an issue for accessibility. I make sure to put "Hey! Don't put anything in this field!" as a placeholder.
