dylanpyle··on Git git git git git
You're right, I meant to summarize more along the lines that calling something multiple times doesn't cause more than one set of side effects. Unfortunately too late to edit by the time I re-read it!
dylanpyle··on Simple note taking from the command line
I've been using a variation on this for a bit:

    (echo && date && cat) >> ~/notes.txt
Adds a newline and datestamp above each note group
dylanpyle··on Git git git git git
In the context of software it seems like the word has pretty broadly adopted the meaning of "side-effect free". It's even made it to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idempotence#Computer_science_m...

One notable example: Stripe's "idempotency keys": https://stripe.com/blog/idempotency

dylanpyle··on Let’s kill no-reply
I've seen noreply@ useful/necessary in cases where the original message contained sensitive information that you wouldn't want forwarded to support staff if someone chose to reply.
dylanpyle··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
Though the security justification here is limited to private APIs & native code pushing, the first few sentences of the rejection definitely seem like the "spirit" of the terms includes any significant functionality pushing at all. Wouldn't be surprised if they ramp up enforcement on that.
dylanpyle··on Vultr introduces $2.50/month plan
I've got a few things running on $3/mo Scaleway boxes. Bandwidth is unmetered and 200Mbit/sec. The only extra cost I pay for is additional storage volumes (50gb included, additional 1 euro per 50 GB/month) - other than that, dead reliable and all inclusive.
dylanpyle··on Next.js – A small framework for server-rendered universal JavaScript apps

Minifying HTML, JS, CSS is a common practice

dylanpyle··on US ready to 'hand over' the internet's naming system
In fact, in direct contradiction:

> Instead, the US has used its remaining power over DNS to shift control to Icann, not the UN.

dylanpyle··on I’m not a human: Breaking the Google reCAPTCHA [pdf]
One of the more interesting references linked here was https://github.com/neuroradiology/InsideReCaptcha — apparently the reCAPTCHA JavaScript snippet uses an encrypted bytecode format running on a custom-built VM, which one intrepid person has decompiled.

We're hiring several important engineering roles: Android, iOS, and API engineers, as well as DevOps and QA.

We've got a lot of exciting problems to solve, and we're still a small team - the opportunity to take on a big role and have huge impact is very real.

Check out our jobs page at https://shyp.com/jobs , or send me an email: dylan+hn@shyp.com

Re: Remote opportunities - We are super interested in hiring great people who can't move to SF. We believe our processes can support remote work, but we understand this is a hard thing for us to assert with confidence. That said, we are extremely interested in building remote-work processes that scale - let's talk!

Not looking, but based in SF? You might be interested in our lunchtime tech talks - send a note to burke+talks@shyp.com to get on the list.

dylanpyle··on Famo.us is now open source
The README refers to an "examples" repository at https://github.com/Famous/examples - it's not accessible right now, but presumably will be shortly.
dylanpyle··on Test if a URL uses Node.js
Just a heads up, there's already a handful of private staging/demo server URLs @ http://dotheyusenode.herokuapp.com/cache - you may want to reconsider exposing that for the publicly available instance.
dylanpyle··on This girl in SF stole my MacBook Air
iAlertU does this, unfortunately too many false positives that I had to stop using it.
dylanpyle··on Coin: A step in the wrong direction
As far as I can tell, the BLE radio in Coin is only used for detecting location, and doesn't expose any card details in any form.
dylanpyle··on Choc: Bret Victor's 'Learnable Programming' implemented in Javascript
For the interested: Jan Paul Posma has done some really awesome stuff with similar inspirations at jsdares (http://www.jsdares.com/) — try dragging around some of the variables in the brick game.
dylanpyle··on Google is joining the Open edX platform
We're working on that problem at Versal (http://versal.com)
dylanpyle··on List of hidden OS X features, tips and tricks
Didn't see this one on the list - while Command+Tabbing, if you hold down Option while letting go of Command at the end, you'll open a new window in the specified application if it currently doesn't have any open.

It might sound confusing, but it's quite useful if you've closed all the windows of a given app but still have it running.

dylanpyle··on Dropbox Acquires Mailbox
It's super fast and enticing to triage emails immediately rather than letting them gather dust in your inbox. Not much in the way of revolutionary features, but it definitely makes the entire workflow noticeably smoother.
dylanpyle··on Kim Dotcom's back with a new 50GB free storage service: Mega
If the resultant crowd cancels the concert for everybody? Yeah, probably.
dylanpyle··on Ideas for Raspberry Pi Projects
Fixed, thanks :)
dylanpyle··on Ideas for Raspberry Pi Projects
Not sure why, but Chrome/Safari are misinterpreting this gzip as a file, thus forcing a download (and there's no Content-Disposition header that I can see). Anyone else experiencing this?
dylanpyle··on Jquery.com was down
Yep, should have mentioned this, definitely a sensible idea - I believe this specific snippet is taken from HTML5 boilerplate. Google is blocked in some countries!
dylanpyle··on Jquery.com was down
Possibly a good time for a reminder, folks: It's worth checking that if you're hotlinking to jQuery, it's the Google Hosted Libraries version.[1]

It looks like code.jquery.com survived whatever the present situation is (otherwise a big chunk of the 'net would be finding out right about now), but it's been made clear for a while [2] that use of the code.jquery.com/* URLs isn't encouraged.

dylanpyle··on Versal - HTML5 education platform (splash)
Hey, thanks for the tip. We had some last-minute changes that our CDN took a while to propagate; it should be fixed now though. Let me know if you find any other issues.
