dylan604··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
I don't run GrapheneOS, but I have an >15 character passphrase that must be used before biometrics can be used after reboot. I haven't used a 4-digit pin since the option to not use it was available.
dylan604··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
That's been my experience as well. I've visited Sydney twice, and both times I've been asked to light up my devices. Granted, I was on work trips requiring three separate laptops which does probably look suspect, but once they were booted they did not request to browse anything and were satisfied to see them working.

> On GrapheneOS, for privacy and convenience, it's best to use a long random passphrase

Why do you call out just one OS? It's a good idea for any OS.

dylan604··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
> these are common place things in the UK and no one cares

That seems like a YP not an MP. Just because you and your fellow countrymen gave up long ago is not the problem of those fighting to not lose those rights now. Except maybe you guys make it easier as an example of for the government to show as an example of other countries are already doing it. Thanks for that.

The fight might be a losing cause, but at least it is being fought as long as it can be fought instead of just laying down and accepting it like the UK seems to have done.

dylan604··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Everyone talks about the ringed planets, but I've never seen Earth mentioned of having a ring. I've also never seen mentioned that the rings were not man made as a qualifier. Yet, there it is, very clearly visible when zoomed out.

One of the things that I noticed was how far away Parker was from the sun. I know it has a crazy orbit, but seeing it at a scale reference just emphasizes how its orbit is complicated.

Also, checking out the platforms around L2. Euclid and JWST are no where near each other which again, just emphasizes how much space there is in...space.

Far enough in advance to be available in a printed newspaper. Planned.
dylan604··on Why Doesn't Anyone Want to Fix One of America's Scariest Roads?
If they fix the potholes, imagine the damage to the mechanic economy for no longer needing to replace tires/wheels, fix suspensions, etc. The mechanic lobby is never going to let this happen!!

dylan604··on Optimizing x264 settings and per-title ladders
It's been a long time since I've had to worry about encoding parameters, but even these settings feel like a set it and forget it compared to what we used to do in the past. Comparing encoding for streaming vs shiny round discs is so different. We would do scene by scene encodes with a minimum of 2-passes allowing for even more when necessary. We were strict on controlling the VBV but these formats had more bandwidth than streaming and were not susceptible to congestion and buffering issues. The video was even sent to QA to look for any kind of issues with the encoding. I doubt anybody looks at the best quality of the ladder let alone all of the variations before it reaches the users.

dylan604··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
Just wondering what an internet archive for usenet groups might have looked like. Back then, it was cool to have messages have a finite time limit before going away. Snapchat isn't an original idea. Now, unless you're Snap, it's anathema for a company to think that willingly removing user content would be a good idea.

dylan604··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
even though this is very late, cable was developed in late 40s/early 50s. Those stations did not come until the 80s. So 30 years qualifies very early on I guess, but sounds more revisionist time to me.
dylan604··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
That totally depends. If you're focused on tech, then that's one thing. But if you want overall quality of life, I can't imagine this is true. Work/life balance seems way more balanced in pretty much any part of Europe. It also probably depends on one's age.
dylan604··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
They had two world wars and devastated cities to rebuild. They also had the very real threat of further escalation with the raging Cold War. Meanwhile, the US had no real threat of further violence. Most of those with the adventurous spirit found their way to the US to continue the westward expansion and seems to be Europe's biggest export.

> I think maybe it was government subsidized?

The first rule of government spending, why build one when you can build two at twice the price? Sounds like the project's goal wasn't to build a successful thing, but to bilk the government for as much funding for as long as possible.

It's not the speed of travel that gets you. It's the sudden rate change from/to walking speed.
dylan604··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
Being on the board is a Sisyphean effort based on the weighted voting setup. Some seem to be slower to realize this. At that point, they could quit and walk away with nothing, or as others have suggested, this could have been done deliberately to at least get a payday on the way out.

No, cable was specifically created to deliver broadcast to those that could not receive it[0]. Those many more channels came some time later

> OTA video quality isn't that great anymore.

While this might be true from the intended full stream for a single channel (Congress wasn't happy when they authorized without understanding the network's intentions of multicasting), but I did an A/B test for people during a Super Bowl comparing Comcast to OTA. Nevermind the delay in Comcast signal, the image was noticeably better.

dylan604··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
You're the reason cable was invented in the first place
dylan604··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
If you have a cable subscriptions, pretty much all of the apps will allow you to use the app by connecting with your provider. When I cut the cord, I was reminded of how many of the apps I was using were covered this way. At this point, rough math in my head suggests the a la carte app subs are higher than the single cable sub.
