dwaltrip··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Hmm interesting idea. I’m pretty confident there is generalization and learning that occurs during RL that does make the model smarter. So I think the distinction doesn’t fully hold up.
dwaltrip··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
RL is part of the model’s training. It changes the weights.

What distinction are you drawing?

dwaltrip··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Every man and woman and child for themselves! Cooperation and support are for weaklings.

More seriously, it seems like you have an uncommon view about good ways for people to relate to each other. You may recall that humans evolved to live in large, cooperative groups :)

> So as long as these websites aren't defrauding the customers with fake stats, there really is nothing wrong.

This is a moral stance that not everyone agrees with.

Ban this shit. Fuck anyone who works at these companies.
dwaltrip··on Claude partial outage
I like the cut of your jib. Do you have a blog?
dwaltrip··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
The exploding rockets were all test launches. SpaceX is pretty good at launching rockets successfully:

> Rockets from the Falcon 9 family have a success rate of 99.57% and have been launched 703 times over 16 years, resulting in 700 full successes, two in-flight failures [...], one pre-flight failure [...], and one partial failure [...]. The active version of the rocket, the Falcon 9 Block 5, has flown 633 times successfully and failed once [...], resulting in a 99.84% success rate.

Wow. That was amazing... I've watched it like 10 times in the past hour
dwaltrip··on Musk, the Movie
There's a lot of terrible things that should be said about Musk, but somehow I don't think this film will do a great job of saying those things.

dwaltrip··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
The point of imprisonment is cruelty? Many would disagree. I can think of a few other reasons for it...
dwaltrip··on Making the case for Ed Zitron as the last of the great bloggers
I should start a blog under the name of Zid Edtron where I write with the most ridiculous pomp, taking the exact opposite stance. Maybe I’ll even get to go on TV.
dwaltrip··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
My argument is mostly about the complexity and the immensely intricate physicality of biology.

We can barely inspect much of it, let alone fully understand it.

dwaltrip··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Biology is much harder than math for humans as well!
dwaltrip··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Shooting from the hip: Embodiment is simply a highly sophisticated harness.
dwaltrip··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
I meant, it shouldn't affect the resulting LLM output. It's a performance optimization that doesn't change the behavior.
dwaltrip··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Maybe we can also replace the customers with agentic consumers.
dwaltrip··on Good people refuse to do bad things
How do you know articles like this are ineffective?

I know people in my life who have discomfort about their jobs at Meta because of how other people view the company. One of them is planning to leave in the next year or so.

The impact may be hard to measure or rather diffuse, but in my experience, it is real.

dwaltrip··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
The cache shouldn't affect inference. It is purely an I/O optimization.
dwaltrip··on Don't Use AI to Write
AI can’t write for shit because it doesn’t have your experience for context and it doesn’t know what you actually want to say.

Hell, most people barely have a rough idea of what they are trying to say when they sit down to write, and they have all of the context.

Writing and coding do have many similarities, at a high level. But the things that make AI good at coding don’t really apply to writing. The analogy doesn’t work well here.

dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Weights are fixed after training, this is true. But activations during inference are not. They are quite dynamic.

A certain configuration of weights, created in training, could be a system that can express something like emotion. The emotion then is experienced when certain types of activations occur after training.

dwaltrip··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Welcome to the internet :)

dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
I live in an apartment building :/

Not a bad idea though.

I have become increasingly selective with the animal product grocery items I buy. It’s expensive, but over time I think the price should go down as more people care about this.

dwaltrip··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The problem with this mindset is that it isn’t very useful or actionable, regardless of how true it is.

Maybe try differentiating a bit? You could see if there certain scenarios that leave room for a better outcome for both you and a less intelligent person. You might even learn something interesting.

Right now, I’d say you are painting with an overly broad brush.

P.S. Have you done any soul searching to see if this is largely a comforting thought that helps assuage the frustrations of dealing with the BS of life? If you are open to the idea, might be valuable.

dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
And how do we stop? Must I become vegan…?

I accept that may be the only meaningful step I personally could take. It’s a large one though…

I do agree with the sibling comment that one terrible thing doesn’t justify another.

dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
And what of amnesia and dementia?
dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Why can’t there exist something analogous to emotions outside of carbon-based biological processes?
dwaltrip··on A warning about 'model welfare'
It happened “accidentally” once already. Evolution certainly didn’t have a roadmap it was working towards.
