dvduval··on How the Sacklers shifted $10.8B of an opioid fortune built on OxyContin
Me either. Imagine a world where the poor have no news access, and instead depend on Facebook for news.
dvduval··on US Border Patrol says they can create central repository of traveler emails
Uninstall everything before crossing the border? The 100 miles thing is the weirdest though, especially if enforceable on someone who has not recently/ever crossed the border.
dvduval··on Launch HN: GitDuck (YC S20) – Zoom for developers with real-time code sharing
It "is zoom" or it "isn't zoom"? This was confusing to me. Perhaps you are directly integrating with zoom so actually it is zoom. Or else you have some sort of clone.
dvduval··on Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing
True, and Mandarin would be the better word to use here. Mandarin and Cantonese are for all intents and purposes separate languages. They are more different than English and Spanish.
dvduval··on Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing
Some languages like Chinese have a large corpus of information that can be studied, and there has been a continuous effort to standardize the language. it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be easier than English. I would expect it would be more difficult when you're talking about languages that have regional differences in usage of words, perhaps northern Vietnamese vs. Southern Vietnamese, or the Spanish of Spain versus the Spanish of Mexico.
dvduval··on Web by Google (TM)
I actually posted a very similar comment before I saw yours. I totally agree that there's always this sort of redirection going on whenever there's something critical of Google here. And there's so much about Google I like. I just wish we could have more discussion about the original topic.
dvduval··on Web by Google (TM)
302 Redirect: Just an observation that whenever there is something critical of Google here, the leading comments always are talking about something besides Google. There is sort of a redirection at work.
dvduval··on Tesla Fremont to Soon Activate World’s Largest Unibody Casting Machine
So wpuld I save enough money on this new car because Tesla saved money building it, and therefore have enough money for a car insurance that would cover any damage to the frame so that this is a non-issue? Or is Tesla just passing this problem on to the consumer?
dvduval··on Google’s top search result is Google
There are some great translation tools besides Google translate. I find Microsoft translate sometimes outperforms Google translate for certain languages. For example Google doesn't even have Cantonese. And there are some translation apps coming out of China that are also really awesome. I can't speak for other languages. I just wanted to point out that Google putting themselves first in the results is not always an indicator that it is the best results.
dvduval··on Odds of communicating with 36 other possible intelligent civilizations are small
Some civilizations may be able to populate multiple planets in their solar system and increase the chances that they will survive for perhaps thousands of years at a technologically higher level. During this time they may even be able to reach other solar systems. If they do that and can repeat it then they may be able to keep going millions of years. This may already be happening somewhere.
dvduval··on University of the People: Tuition-Free, Accredited Online Degree Programs
I like the premise and I believe education should be a basic right. Someone should be able to pursue knowledge to the highest level and receive recognition for having done that. Now so often large corporations will not hire someone unless they went to a very expensive school, or at least their chances are much lower. So I like the overall idea here and I hope it will grow in strength
dvduval··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
I have been a Windows user and an Android user for a long time, and I never seem to have the need to venture into the Apple ecosystem. I actually did have an Apple phone for several months and it was okay. No complaints. But there's just not an ecosystem that I need. I have everything I need without the Apple ecosystem. There's nothing that gives me passion to use something that is exclusively an Apple product. In a way it's kind of weird. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here. But I'm sure there's other people like me.
dvduval··on Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data
I know that Google is making money through use of my personal data. I wish they would be required boldly state on every page that my personal data is being used, and that they are profiting from it. Finally, there should be some steps offered to remedy some of the above such as requesting that parts of the data that would be convenient for me to have deleted would be deleted. And the parts that are inconvenient such as my ability to login to sites I commonly visit could be preserved since that minimum requirements are met so I can easily access those sites.

And while I have no big conspiracy theories at the moment about how Google is doing anything evil, there is certainly no guarantee that something in the future could impact me. For example there could be some bad players working inside Google, Google could be acquired, or the government could take control in some way. these are all things that could be dangerous to me in the future if Google continues to preserve large amounts of my personal information.

dvduval··on Leave Facebook
Now if this were an important Facebook employee writing this, and many Facebook employees were considering getting together to leave and start something better, I would totally love that.
dvduval··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
In the right medium, perhaps the user agent would also decide when my posts are shown to people versus an ad being shown in place of my post such that I make money. Then a site like Facebook would only make a small portion of my ad revenue in exchange for hosting it.
dvduval··on Show HN: A Firefox add-on to strip Google search results of 'blacklisted' URLs
I would so love to have a search engine setting in which I could remove the top 500 web properties from my search, or have similar parameters to help remove large swaths information that I'm not interested in looking at.
dvduval··on The Chinese Challenge
Good article. I think inequality has a way of rectifying itself over time, especially in a global economy. When someone is willing to work for much less, and comes to have similar skills as people in other countries, in time there is likely to be a change that makes it worthwhile to hire that person.

Yet famine and poverty are much less today, so the productivity per person is much higher, and that is better for everyone. Unfortunately, competition can still have losers, but now, more than before, the losers are not as likely to experience extreme poverty and starvation.

dvduval··on The evidence behind putting money directly in the pockets of the poor
Shouldn't firefighters compete to see who can spend the least amount of money putting out fires? Shouldn't health insurance agencies compete to see who can spend the least on healing people? Until we get these things straight why would he want to have the government spend money or making infrastructure stronger? After all, government spending is bad, right?
dvduval··on Introducing Facebook Shops
I don't trust Facebook, but I use it. I don't spend money on Facebook. I don't intend to have a financial relationship with Facebook. There certainly are some benefits of using Facebook for certain purposes.
dvduval··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
This is a long way from Nielsen ratings were they called viewers. If my personal activity is being tracked, by definition that is personal and I should have a right to know what personal information is being tracked. In exchange for that information I can make a decision about my viewing habits.
dvduval··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
I want to have a right to know how much money was paid for my clicks and views. At the very least, I should have access to all data regarding my clicks and views and have the right to ask that to be removed completely or for a date range.
dvduval··on Want to build a side business? buy a great domain name
So many domain names I bought and never used. Haha the idea seems so great at the time. I suppose you just have to go about trying different things until you start to have some traction. it's just important to recognize that it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking something is going to be super simple, and then starting to execute without any sort of detailed plan. The result ... Wasted time and money
dvduval··on Google deletes “communist bandits” from comments on Youtube
These numbers are just for the US. Comparing this to the AT&T break-up is not even similar, because Google has but even bigger market share when you consider their international operations as well.
dvduval··on Doordash and Pizza Arbitrage
The restaurants need to work through their own trade organization where they band together and push out the delivery businesses that are costing them money, and then allow delivery companies to bid for their business.
dvduval··on Doordash and Pizza Arbitrage
Lose a few 100 million today for a monopoly next year. I make the assumption here that these delivery services are intent on dominating the search results so that independent restaurants are not able to compete. They are forced into using the services, or rather having a large majority of other orders coming from these services.
dvduval··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs
Yep, that seems about right. I have had two forums since 2002, and while they still have a small user base, everybody switched to Facebook and the like. Not sure if I blame Google as much in the case of forums. I have enjoyed seeing notifications in the browser added, as the browser is starting to have similar powers to apps. Of course, Apple is having none of that, as they love apps and the app store sales.
dvduval··on C64 Memory Map
Ah, this reminds me of my first computer, the Vic 20. I was fascinated by all this. unfortunately I didn't apply myself and learn what all of this meant at that time.
dvduval··on Our restaurants are failing. Why should food delivery apps thrive?
Google ranks apps higher than restaurants. It would not be all that difficult to roll out a more open source technology that all restaurants could use. Then Google can rank the restaurants more and the apps less. or perhaps a search engine like being might move into this space. This would be a savings for the restaurants and the consumers.
dvduval··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
Just following your argument down that road... What if one day there is only one company in the whole world? if they just slowly envelops all the other companies, and perhaps met your definition of this being legal and fair, would that be fine?
dvduval··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
Yes, indeed. And if Google is monetizing me, I don't equate that to being free. I can't tell you what I'm giving up, because Google does not share with me how much money they are making because of me.
