duxup··on Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who Will End Civilization
Exceptionalism is always just about if you can pull it off.
duxup··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
I've had really good luck with Golden Gate. I like this release.

I feel like every Apple software release just spawns "it wasn't like this in the old days everything is a mess" articles. It's just noise now.

duxup··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Expanding / legalized sports gambling in the US was a terrible mistake.
duxup··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Maybe some niche subs are safe-ish from targeted bots, but I'm seeing some niche subs constantly hit by bots who misunderstand what the sub is actually about and post something that maybe matches the words of the sub's name ... but not the actual intent of the sub. Basically lost bots, and they don't stop.

Also the software / programming subs are just spam hell now.

duxup··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
My wife works for a school system that at one point had the following proclamation handed down:

"We're referring too many black kids to special services. That could be because of racism."

Keep in mind these were free services like speech therapy, help with reading and so on.

So in the spirit of not being racist they decided the teacher's couldn't use their own judgment on who needed services and offered black and other minority students fewer services.

Public school administration is just poor all around. For many their first response is to blame teachers because that's the easiest target. The union is of no help either. Any complaint from a parent, even well known problem parents, is a whole process of emails and meetings and etc with no real resolution. It takes an endless amount of time before it's clear "problem is the parent" and by the time that is decided they're gone and on to the next parent who submitted their 6th absurd complaint this year and everyone starts over wagging fingers at the teacher's.

duxup··on Silicon Valley 'sex assault list' with 'over 100' names circulated
Is there a better source on this other than nypost?
duxup··on Texas police department ordered to close for failing to provide public benefit
It’s common in the US for small cities without a police force to be covered by county officers.
duxup··on Texas police department ordered to close for failing to provide public benefit
I wish I knew what the report said exactly…. what did they do? Nothing?

>The mayor said he invites anyone with knowledge of water systems to get in touch with the city to help.

This seems like a bad way to fix things….

duxup··on I said no and Apple said yes
Personally, I love their hardware and I’m rarely inconvenienced.
duxup··on Don't Just Say Hello
At one company I got so many messages like that … I just chose not to respond if they didn’t have an actual message.

One of the managers who was not a fan of mine (or anyone) tried to get me in trouble for not responding to his team (they had a habit of handing off tickets they didn’t like the look of to other teams).

I gathered up all the plain “hello” messages and sent it as my response. There were hundreds of them in a single month. My response was that I was working my own tickets and can’t stop to address “hello” messages with no context hundreds of times a month. If they have a critical situation, then they need to say so to get me to break away from my critical situation….

duxup··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I grew up in a small-ish town and when there was a construction site there was inevitably a large pile of dirt somewhere nearby. Often 10 or more feet tall. If construction wasn't occurring it would be occupied by neighborhood kids digging, building dirt bike tracks and most importantly building walls / battlements.

Various neighborhood kids would take the dirt fort and try to hold it against the other neighborhood kids who came and ... everyone threw "dirt clods" at each other. A few rules like "no rocks" were understood.

Otherwise the battle resumed every day the workers weren't working on the dirt pile... it was glorious. Win or lose you returned home each day dirty as could be, and very happy you did your duty that day alongside your friends from the neighborhood.

That is a long way of saying that sometimes I see some strange "tribal" stuff that seems weird to me, and actually no I kinda get it.

duxup··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
Are social stigmas as far as the internet goes doing any good?

I feel like they’re very much not.

duxup··on Iranian banks' SSL certificates are being revoked due to OFAC sanctions
This seems like a poor choice. Missing the point of sanctions, possible long term negative second order effects.
duxup··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Does anyone make VR games anymore?
duxup··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I think I feel similarly to you.

M currently re-writing an app that I wrote years ago. All the issues came from data structures, queries, architecture that didn’t fit what emerged as the use case.

Now I can focus on those things and work far faster, and even ADJUST architecture, theorize about pros and cons of changes as I work … sometimes I find that some adjustments are easier than I thought.

The result is far faster development, and a more optimal result where I can stay focused on improvements / efficiency rather than random minutia.

duxup··on Child Sexual Abuse Material Persists on X
I remember in the old days of the discovery channel or maybe it was the learning channel they had surgery videos. Very interesting, very gory.
duxup··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Seems about right, in the sense that these advertising companies are just fine dealing with scammers / taking their money … but there are corners of the same company that also have reasons to not allow that behavior and it becomes a circle where Google users and etc are banned for Google encouraged activity.

Last week on YouTube I was logged out of YouTube and on my work computer got an ad that appeared to offer access to underage girls, the pic was creepy as hell. Google took their money but if I posted that image in a video I bet I would be banned….

duxup··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
Dude “makes million of dollars” and spends that much time wasting away commenting on Reddit…
duxup··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Meanwhile random griefer types work the Google system just fine. For whatever reason some randos altering business hours and posting mass quantities of weird maps reviews, closed updates stay up.

Meanwhile on YouTube when I’m not getting questionable medical drugs and gadgets advertised at me on YouTube… I’ll also get what seems like just porn.

I got one that I’m pretty sure was heavily hinting at “find under age girls”… I shit you not. The pic was disturbing.

My YouTube history, cats and coding music…. I don’t get it.

duxup··on Nathan Fielder's Elizabeth Holmes Doc Met with Shock and Awe at Secret Screening
My understanding from articles, they had scientists hard at work trying to get their machine to work and the issues that were essentially maintenance (you really couldn’t have a testing machine like this that didn’t require expensive / regular maintenance as promised). The amount of blood wasn’t really even addressed yet and they faked results in house using competitors machines.

In house teams were not optimistic, but they got paid to experiment and try so they did.

duxup··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
I’ve had “Boss I can fix this in one line of code.” situations, but nobody of 6 people wanted to make the call despite involving themselves excessively.

So nothing got done.

So the temperature on the issue went up.

So management whose failure was their own could only think of engaging more managers and processes….

Never ended.

I work at small companies now, less money but I enjoy it more. I just fix things and everyone is happy.

duxup··on The moral panic over data centres is foolish
We have been building them for decades without problems at the scale we’re talking about them now.

There’s a few in my area that have huge green space around them as per local government and I’d love to live near them…. You got big open green space, trees, wetlands. One I know of is home to Sandhill cranes every summer.

Just do the thing, right.

duxup··on FBI Probes Service Selling 153M+ Drivers Licenses
I’ve had more than one client tell me they want to collect drivers license images for various reasons.

Somewhere in the inane executive brain world there are some folks who seem to see some unspecified value in collecting driver’s license images. They never have given me a sensible justification. They seemed to think it provided some assurance that the providing it is in fact who they really are and they can validate…. something.

I’ve managed to push back on that and told them I didn’t want the legal responsibility of managing such data and tracking all the legal responsibilities for any number of countries and ect.

It doesn’t surprise me that there is a ready made service to bypass this kind of absurd requirement.

duxup··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
It’s wild. It’s one of those “Do we have to tell you people to not do this?!?!?”
duxup··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
A coworker of mine once answered the wrong cell phone and said the wrong company name. (He was working for a competitor as well as our company.)

Another turned his computer that “wouldn’t behave” into IT, full of porn.

duxup··on Fastpotify
I’ll take it a step further and say I think the current music player-isms UX is just not easy to use and gets in my way of enjoying music…
duxup··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
Yeah I’m inclined to agree. Even with choices of services and their choices on the internet… it’s just not a priority for most users in a way that matters.
duxup··on LLMs are making me lose my savviness
Being able to ask the dumb questions but then get focused on something more technical is so nice. Get examples on demand.

It helps me pickup and understand new things pretty fast.

duxup··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
Yup. I take the time to review and adjust my code… regardless the source. It works.

Well most of the time but either way that’s on me.

duxup··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
They don't really care about any of that. The NRA has been a slush fund for it's leadership for a while.
