Wut?
I'm not encouraging the to grift, ffs, I'm encouraging them to go and work somewhere that will appreciate their efforts!
I accept that public sector, charitable sector etc, make this calculation a bit different. But in the private sector it just seems silly to give yourself to a job that doesn't appreciate what you give it.
if i want to read them all, I don't need help choosing. any book is one I want to read!
if I don't want to read them, I already have opinions. I should just pick one that I do want to read.
and I don't have opinions I can just ask someone for a recommendation.
big libraries existed before algorithmic recommendations, and people managed.
talking about doomscrolling and how it would be better not to do it is one of the favourite pastimes of the doomscroller. loads of fb users hate it but struggle to believe they could do without it.
But I've also never worked at a large company.
it is absolutely not on maintainers of projects to proactively notify those who've forked the project. clear and transparent notices are exactly the right approach
But I'd take them every time over a definition of art being "something for which there is a market". Screw that.
OK. Well I am clearly an art master of lunch planning. Who knew?
This is an very broad definition of 'art'. By this metric, I'm pretty sure me choosing what to have for lunch is art.
It's obviously massively generalising, but I'd say someone without ADHD is more likely to feel like the number of tasks they can do at once is only limited by pesky things like physics and time, and LLMs "solve" this by allowing them to do more at once.
A bit like when a good manager takes on more and more reports and their ability to manage the larger team goes completely to shit, but without the useful feedback loop of the grumpy, mismanaged team.
We live pretty close to a flight path and still point at planes as they go past and wonder where they might be going on holiday.
Sadly no longer live close enough that I can see my house when approaching the local airport. That was always cool.
No-one's stopping you hosting your own projects.
I've used it plenty for things like driving trip to remote places with poor signal (e.g. where you'll want to be able to get directions back to civilisation) and foreign cities (when you're on a phone contract with bad overseas data prices).
Whilst that's better for a small audience of techy types (most here, I'd guess), you know that's not true for most users, right?
Like people used to lose work on hard drives and laptops that they hadn't backed up all the time and its much, much rarer now (OK, I don't have data beyond anecdata but still).
The area you can download is still pretty large - whole cities, big chunks of countryside. I'd put money on the fact its good enough for most people's uses.
- it demonstrates they have funding (pre-empting "no-one will fund something weird like this")
- its transparent and open (pre-empting "which bastards are the ones who really own it?")
They were asked if you'd fit in and they gave the most diplomatic, polite feedback that they knew would be be taken as a no. Their comment was a pretty clear admission that this was not a "work life balance kind of company".
I feel like every security blog (or even just tech blog) I've read recently has had paragraphs and paragraphs of largely LLM generated explainer waffle. This felt refreshingly focused and to the point.
Although tbf its kinda hard to check without reading the whole book, no? A bit like saying "you don't have to buy a jigsaw puzzle with a piece missing"
Old reddit is going to be MUCH, MUCH easier to scrape. Scraping has the potential to bring down the site. Gating old reddit to logged in users will massively mitigate that.
I don't like it either. But it's not hard to see a good reason why doing so helps "keep reddit safe"
Even if it also coincidentally makes it easier for them to make more money. Grr.
I ditched wireguard for tailscale for the ease of managing it. I'd much rather run my own independently but CBA with the config editing hassle.
