durovo··on Software Piracy and IP Management: Strategic Responses to Imitation
If you consider SAAS and locked-down subscription models to be innovative, then this is definitely true.
durovo··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
If it seems like this scanning is working as advertised, this will be a great marketing stunt for Apple. Actual predators will stop using Apple products out of fear of getting caught and they will be forced to use Android.

Now any person who owns an Android is a potential predator. Also, if you are trying to jailbreak your iPhone, you are a potential predator.

durovo··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
It's their phone, surely they can do whatever they want with it?
durovo··on China bans for-profit school tutoring in sweeping overhaul
I find it funny how inverting a binary tree is used as an example of a bad leetcode problem. This problem seems more like a fizzbuzz test, anyone who knows recursion should be able to solve it on their own.
durovo··on iDOS 2 will be gone soon
I don't understand how unions would help here. Closed platforms are in the interest of developers. Devs make a good amount of money on closed platforms like iOS.

Closed platforms are not in the interest of users.

durovo··on Google engineer who criticized company in viral comics on why he finally quit
I feel that this is an excuse often used by people who want to do virtue signalling but also want a big paycheck along with it.

The number of talented people in any industry are always limited. If enough people refuse to work at places that they don't ideologically agree with (and maybe dedicate their time working on solutions), at the very least, the operational cost of these companies would increase.

durovo··on Indian state proposes two-child policy, stringent measures for violators
Increase in population definitely accelerates climate change. If the world's population doubled to around 16 billion, would humanity's carbon footprint remain the same?
durovo··on Indian state proposes two-child policy, stringent measures for violators
The fertility rate of the state in question might be more relevant here which seems to be about 3.0 [0].

These conversations miss the fact that the actual distribution of the people in the country is very relevant. If you have ever been to UP, you would know how it is overflowing with people.

durovo··on Single random bit flip causes error in certificate transparency log
Or was it a targetted data manipulation attack by the aliens?
durovo··on Installing Windows 11 on Legacy BIOS Without Secure Boot
Linux on laptops/desktops will only survive if Microsoft maintains their model of working on different types of hardware and not insisting on being the hardware controller. With so many people embracing Apple's approach of one company controlling every part of the stack, I don't think Microsoft will keep supporting their model for long unless forced to.
durovo··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
I believe what they are saying (hoping for?) is that since there are many Windows compatible laptops with touchscreens (unlike macbooks), Android app experience on them might be better.
durovo··on Forget going back to the office – people are just quitting instead
What people miss in these discussions about going full remote is that the market for software developers is very good right now but this won't last forever. Many companies are surely going to embrace full-remote once they have built up the right processes and infra.

When that happens, it is not going to matter whether you live in California or Mexico or Brazil. It is much easier to replace an employee who is working remotely, the burden of looking for employees in the locality of your office is gone. Wages will stop growing. While WFH is very convenient, the strong market is giving developers a false impression that they won't become replaceable cogs in the future.

durovo··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
"One obvious demand would have been access to the WIV’s database of some 22,000 virus samples and sequences, which had been taken offline. At an event convened by a London organization on March 10, Daszak was asked whether the group had made such a request. He said there was no need: Shi Zhengli had stated that the WIV took down the database due to hacking attempts during the pandemic. “Absolutely reasonable,” Daszak said. “And we did not ask to see the data…. As you know, a lot of this work has been conducted with EcoHealth Alliance…. We do basically know what’s in those databases. There is no evidence of viruses closer to SARS-CoV-2 than RaTG13 in those databases, simple as that.”"

What did she mean when she said that the database is offline? It's not like the data would be gone if the service is not running?

durovo··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos?
Yes, I have it installed locally. Haven't played around with it much though, features like grouping by face were not present the last time I checked. Honestly, Google Photos is just too convenient. Photoprism is a good backup option though.
durovo··on Instagram lets users hide likes to reduce social media pressure
And now you hang out at HN which is totally different from social media. Where people never seek approval from the masses. Chastising other people as a concept does not exist on HN.

HN, the not-social media, does not even have a concept of likes.

durovo··on Scientists rediscover lost coffee species suited to a warmer climate
Probably because what we perceive as taste is also related to our sense of smell [0] and you have probably smelled burning rubber before.

durovo··on Stadia’s VP and head of product leaves Google
Honestly, Stadia would have worked out fine had they started it with a game pass model. Pay a monthly fee and get a library of games to play. They could have later allowed people to buy games 'forever' as well.
durovo··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
Absolutely, I am not trying to defend that stupidity here. Also, it was not a 'few' people not wearing masks. It has always been a few people wearing masks. And what qualifies as a mask for most people should really be questioned.
durovo··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
This thread is full of people pointing fingers at:

1. Election rallies

2. Kumbh Mela

3. Farmer Protests (Yes, they are still going on)

4. The government's incompetence.

And all of these are completely valid reasons. But does anyone living in the country really believe that these are the only reasons? There are still people who believe that Covid is a hoax. People who had not worn a mask for the last 6 months now wear paper thin masks in large crowds and expect to not get Covid.

My neighbor contracted Covid recently, but they have not told anyone about it. All of their household help is still coming. Some of the family members still go out to meet others.

This situation is really a reflection of the selfishness of the people. I have seen medium-sized business that cut salaries if employees take leaves due to covid. So these employees hide their symptoms and report to work. If you are doing any of these things, please self-reflect.

durovo··on Linux Foundation’s demands to the University of Minnesota
Software developers are wage labour because they don't need a license to practice. That is the only difference between the other professions that you mentioned here and software engineering. And let's not act as if there are no questionable practices amongst doctors, accountants, lawyers, and 'real engineers'. I agree about the need for an ethical code though. Maybe a license could enforce that? I don't know how a license would work in a relatively easily outsourced job though.
durovo··on The U.S. corn belt has lost a third of its topsoil
Yes, the Punjab region is beautiful. But maybe you should read about it more: https://www.downtoearth.org.in/coverage/parched-punjab-20535 http://water.columbia.edu/research-themes/water-food-energy-... https://theprint.in/india/governance/save-punjab-from-desert... The region is not green because of the agricultural practices, it was always green and is now dying due to the destructive agriculture.
durovo··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
Thankfully this does not apply exactly to issues relate to gender. Genders should be uniformly distributed across socio-economic classes.
durovo··on Deep Nose may one day be the best diagnostician in medicine
How about using an animal's nose instead of an electronic nose? Detect the brain signals and let the "AI" figure out the patterns when the animal inhales something. No need to create a new nose from scratch, no need to train the animal as well.
durovo··on India protests: Internet cut to hunger-striking farmers in Delhi
I don't believe that the protestors have a moral high ground in this particular case. Many of them receive free electricity and all of them don't pay any taxes (no matter how much they earn). In states like Punjab, the farmers have entered a vicious cycle where they keep planting water-hungry crops like wheat and rice due to the Minimum Support Price that they get on those (the water table in this region is in danger). Plus these protestors are also against the laws that fine farmers for burning the stubble after harvest (which results in the infamous Delhi smog every winter). Basically, it's a fight between two groups with vested interests.
durovo··on “Appointment” as professor at Harvard was an elaborate phishing attack
I would expect a journalist to share this information. Many journalists don't shy away from sharing the details when they are reporting a story on someone else.
durovo··on Apple's privacy labels show WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger hunger for user data
Most wouldn't pay because there are alternative free services with a somewhat similar model. This analysis would be more interesting if all these 'free' alternatives go away.
durovo··on Apple Preps Next Mac Chips with Aim to Outclass Highest-End PCs

durovo··on Ethical AI researcher Timnit Gebru fired from Google
Were you a vendor or did you work in sales/management. I have honestly never seen such a scenario in swes. Would love to know more.
durovo··on Iran’s Top Nuclear Scientist Killed in Attack
I personally don't think that he should have been killed. But GP might have been fine with it had the Japanese killed Oppenheimer?
durovo··on Ask HN: Please stop writing tutorials/tech articles on Medium
