dur-randir··on Getaddrinfo() on glibc calls getenv(), oh boy
We've once spent 3 months debugging crash caused by this.

You can try dmsetup with dust/flakey targets.

dur-randir··on HTTP/2 zero-day vulnerability results in record-breaking DDoS attacks
>HTTP/2 protocol — a fundamental protocol that is critical to how the Internet and all websites work

No, it isn't. This whole article seems more like a marketing sales pitch than a disclosure.

dur-randir··on Life course patterns of prescription drug use in the United States
That's data from early 20th century, so take it with some grain of salt. Nobody would redo proper double-blinded trials nowdays :) Maybe it was measured from the onset, when you still had some b-cells active? Furthermore, people live with 20-30 mmol/L, so it might be not a week even with zero production - our body's adaptability is huge.

T1 kills you with 50% chance in 2 years, without insulin. With hypertension, you can leave 10+ years. Not nearly comparable.
dur-randir··on A dive into the AMD driver workflow
That's why "ROCm support" is pure marketing and FUD. And people rightfully won't buy into it.
dur-randir··on A dive into the AMD driver workflow
VRAM speed is a major factor. Even ddr5 with 4 channels would be slow compared to current GDDRs.
dur-randir··on Google vs. the Open Web
Lots of online games already require that. Valve is especially notorious with that.
dur-randir··on Infinite Photorealistic Worlds Using Procedural Generation
Typical Intel offering is 1.5-2TB per socket. Socket scales up to 8 (though the price increase 2->4 is very steep). Memory itself is registered ECC DIMMs (which is even lower cost than consumer DIMMs/unbuffered ECCs), but to get to 1.5TB density you need low-rank (LRDIMM) modules, which gives x2 capacity but at a higher price.
dur-randir··on Germany wants to legalize quality control of illegal drugs
And Adderall aka amphetamine is prescribed for ADHD.
dur-randir··on Asus Ally Emulates PS3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 with Ease
Asus is your choice if you want an abysmal software support. While it's hardware might be good, I'd stay away from it.
dur-randir··on Google has a consumer loyalty problem with their Pixel phones
It doesn't prevent Samsung from having loyal customers. It doesn't help Sony to gain market share.
dur-randir··on Bcachefs – A New COW Filesystem
Some video production workflows are run on 4xraid0 just for the speed - it fails rarely enough and intermediate output is just re-created.
dur-randir··on Microsoft broke a Chrome feature to promote Edge
Like google never did the same to other browsers on gmail/main search page? Who're they're trying to fool?
dur-randir··on Apple has just released the first Rapid Security Response for Ventura
If it requires reboot, I don't get why it's better than the regular update. And macOS updates now require downtime like in the worst Windows days. Something went into a wrong direction.
dur-randir··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres
Pain to upgrade, double pain to a/b rollout, triple pain to debug.
dur-randir··on Firefox 111.0 enabled Origin private file system access
How do I turn this crap off? Or is this so important for me that I can't?
dur-randir··on OpenSSL 3.1
No API breakage?
dur-randir··on Fix Intel CPU Throttling on Linux
>You cannot simply make a CPU run faster by writing MSRs

I like such generalised statements. You can read about xeon v3 hack and ThrottleStop PowerCut. Each is just "writing MSRs" with a funny side-effect of your CPU taking more current in.

dur-randir··on One UI 5.1 bloatware is not consuming 60 GB storage on new Samsung Galaxy S23
It still eats up +10GB compared to last year.
dur-randir··on LineageOS 20
Even if a single use case requires root, I still need root on device, no way around that.
dur-randir··on LineageOS 20
Yeah, I know your pain. What's worse, there is/was bug in some roms/GP versions which reset this setting upon reboot. Ugh.

I don't know how to turn this misfeature off. Lineage just has a generic slider on a per-app basis, but it still requires revisiting each apps' settings page.

It should be possible with lsposed, but I haven't found such a module.

dur-randir··on LineageOS 20
The only problem I've encountered is when rolling back updates for some apps - they'd crash after restoring them from TB, so I have to uninstall them first and only then restore. But I have a fairly conservative set of apps.
dur-randir··on LineageOS 20
It handled my recent transition flawlessly, but is there anything better?
dur-randir··on LineageOS 20

  - TitaniumBackup
  - ability to monitor battery consumption
  - some dpi evasion apps (they sometimes work where no vpn gets through)
  - packet capture
  - Macrodroid
  - view wifi passwords
  - edit gps.conf, wifi configs, add custom root certs, change default font, etc
  - ssl cert unpinner
  - call recording
  - install Youtube Vanced over original one
  - allow screenshots from any app
  - forbid quick tiles access from lock screen (holy crap, why not all roms have this option??)
  - block custom wakelocks
  - allow app versions downgrade without uninstalling them

You see, half of my phone's capabilities are locked because of "reasons" by Google. But it's me who owns the phone, not them.
dur-randir··on LineageOS 20
There're a lot more unofficial builds, check those.
dur-randir··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
I can't imagine buying anything Intel - s3 sleep is wrecked on all latest generations, and s1e is just asking you to cook your hardware, sooner or later, coupled with horrendous idle battery life, all for your money.
dur-randir··on Mitmproxy 9: WireGuard Mode
Done. Mobile client is the official WireGuard mobile client.
