dur-randir··on macOS Sequoia is available today
- 'cos of backward logic compared to all other applications' move/copy logic

- cmd+opt is a hell of a combination to type

>which locks you out of your purchased App Store software, DRM content

Also false. But Apple's glad you believe in that.

dur-randir··on Intel: New Core Ultra Processors Deliver Breakthrough Performance
1.62kg pro vs 1.24kg air? For me that's the same class.
dur-randir··on Intel: New Core Ultra Processors Deliver Breakthrough Performance
Macbook pro's are up to 128GB.
dur-randir··on Intel Core Ultra 200V promises Arm battery life without compatibility issues
What else would they tell their investors? "We suck at innovation, implementation, execution & delivery combined"?
dur-randir··on Intel details Skymont
>With E cores like this, who needs P cores?

Based on their the current performance, anyone who need it.

dur-randir··on Jgs Font
Fonts files fail some 'system validation' on Mac for me. Does anyone know what's that about and how to fix it?
dur-randir··on Intel's Lion Cove Architecture Preview
>kept winning on raw performance

13900K lost couple of % in single tread performance, which lead to 14900K being so overclocked/overvolted that it lead to it being useless for what it's made for - crunching numbers. See https://www.radgametools.com/oodleintel.htm.

Nothing real. They cherry-pick for what they're trying to sell you this time - advent of 2nd core, +HT, E-cores, -HT, you-name-it-next-time. Without independent benchmark + additional interpretation for your particular workload you can safely ignore all their claims.
dur-randir··on Nikon Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR: The Best All-Purpose Lens I've Ever Used
I own d810 and had d80 and d7100 in the past years. Their current lineup (bodies, mostly) just doesn't appeal to me - if I ever transition to mirrorless, it'd probably be Sony.
dur-randir··on Reasons not to take Lumina's anticavity probiotic
I've never heard about this product, but the tone & narrative of this article made me highly wonder about author's intentions.
dur-randir··on So We've Got a Memory Leak
Instagram ran ~year with GC disabled just fine, citing 10% better memory utilisation. While you might be right for a library code, on application level it sometimes makes sense.
dur-randir··on IBM Granite: A Family of Open Foundation Models for Code Intelligence
Based on their own numbers, 8B seems decent, but 34B not worth it compared to general-purpose trained models even on specific tasks. Which is an interesting result.
dur-randir··on Ten years of improvements in PostgreSQL's optimizer
But PG is much more commonly used for OLTP, not OLAP. I'm baffled to this day that they enabled it by default.
dur-randir··on Pack: A new container format for compressed files
As a separate note, had I encountered pack.ac link anywhere on the internet other than here with a description attached, I'd have left it immediately. It just lacks for me any info what it is and why should I try it.
dur-randir··on Pack: A new container format for compressed files
- loop-mount is a thing

- being read only is mostly a benefit to an archive. Back in the days when drives had been small, I occasionally wanted to update a .rar, but in the last ~5 years I can't remember a case for it.

- it's fine, but don't think that others' use cases are invalid because of your vision

- mount is also a CLI interface

dur-randir··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
>but the notch has to be the dumbest design decision in the history of laptops

No, it had been the touch bar. There're multiply solutions for the notch, none had been imagined for that abomination.

dur-randir··on What's new in the Postgres 16 query planner
There's a separate can of worms with prepared statements. Two main are:

- parameters are opaque to planner, so it prefers (or is even forced to?) to choose generic vs specific plans

- it doesn't play nice with pg_bouncer in transaction mode

dur-randir··on What's new in the Postgres 16 query planner
If it's not ready for everyone, probably it shouldn't have been made a default, don't you think?
dur-randir··on What's new in the Postgres 16 query planner
I disabled JIT after it became default for our installation (~1TB data). Nice try, useful sometimes, but as a default? No, thanks.
dur-randir··on Intel's Humbling
>have made some earnest headway in being an actual fab

In the terms of end product - not really. Last 3-4 gens are indistinguishable to the end user. It's a combined effect of marketing failure and really underwhelming gains - when marketing screams "breakthrough gen", but what you get is +2%/ST perf for another *Lake, you can't sell it.

They might've built a foundation and that might be a deliberate tactics to get back into the race, we'll see. But i'm not convinced for now.

dur-randir··on Paste without formatting on macOS
Remap with Karabiner (https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/). I personally mapped right_command + v to it, but it's capable of a straight out remap.
dur-randir··on Android 14's user-profile data bug
If you can install alternative OS, you have your bootloader unlocked. If you have your bootloader unlocked, you can install magisk. And with magisk, you own your device, not some corporates - so you can back up any data you want.
dur-randir··on Show HN: Pākiki Proxy – An intercepting proxy for penetration testing
Requiring Sonoma seems... weird? It's still pretty much unstable for serious work. Especially if you build with GTK, not with native frameworks. Both Burp and Caido are much more lax, working on HS/EC.

They broke half a market of BLE devices in 2022 and never bothered with investigation or fix. P1, btw. Most manufacturers now just revert some commits (and they identified them in a month!), and some BLE manufacturers pushed firmware updates - after 6 months of broken equipment.

Those two stories is all what you need to know about "7 years of updates are important".

dur-randir··on Ruffle: Flash Player Emulator
IIRC, some version of Adobe Creative Suite.
dur-randir··on Ruffle: Flash Player Emulator
No, it's some Farmville clone.
dur-randir··on Ruffle: Flash Player Emulator
It's a profitable game with an active user base, some of which are stuck on old HW, which can't run WebGL. Flash, surprisingly, is still better at graphics than what current browsers provide.
dur-randir··on Ruffle: Flash Player Emulator
We had one Air app, but it got rewritten into Unity (mobile) and is now retired. No, this one is a real Flash app (MMO game), users run it in one of two ways:

- flash plugin bundled into electron, for players with old hardware, ~30% user base

- Flash transpiled into TypeScript transpiled into ES5 JS, with custom runtime based on WebGL

The whole runtime is kinda like Ruffle, but we don't support all Flash capabilities, just what was required to make app running (but it's still a lot of API surface).

>Is authorship of new titles even a possibility

We still write fresh new AS3 code at $work. All IDEs and tooling are running fine on W10/W11.
